Quote

We would also like to thank the Red Dead Online community for their continued support and dedication.

Over the past few years, we have been steadily moving more development resources towards the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series — understanding more than ever the need to exceed players’ expectations and for this next entry to be the best it can possibly be — and as a result, we are in the process of making some changes to how we support Red Dead Online.

Firstly, with both new and experienced players engaging in the wealth of activities already added to this massively rich world including Specialist Roles, story-based cooperative missions, competitive Showdown Modes, and much more, we will continue to showcase these unique additions through Red Dead Online’s monthly events as we move forward, so players of all levels can enjoy everything the vast frontier has to offer.

Alongside seasonal special events and experience improvements — plus other changes to enhance and maintain a healthy Red Dead Online environment — we plan to build upon existing modes and add new Telegram Missions this year, rather than delivering major themed content updates like in previous years, and we will continue to highlight and share the creative efforts of our Red Dead community at every opportunity via the Newswire and beyond.

Once again, we want to thank the community for their continued support. We are truly grateful for all the constructive feedback we’ve received up to this point and hope you keep it coming. This direct feedback from players has been instrumental to the ongoing success of both GTA Online and Red Dead Online — and an integral element of what helps us continue to evolve and improve as we push ahead towards the future.

it's a nice way of saying RDO is officially done.

Looking at the rest of the article, it very much feels like this summers' GTAO update is likely the last "big" content update for GTA side as well, as they seem to be shifting their focus fully on the next GTA from this point forward.

Which is a good thing, GTAO is milked to the very limits, but RDO deserved much much more...

Oh well...

That’s sad. Major content is kind of what people asked for… But well, they are communicating at least and have stated the reason behind not working on it.

Besides, let’s be frank, it is really the money that dictates everything and I’m sure RDO isn’t as profitable.

They can’t axe GTAO and there’s GTA VI in development. So yeaah…

I honestly am still surprised, to this day, that RDO even exists. While it may sound tone deaf or stupid, I really don’t see much room for expansion in RDO and I’m sure many would disagree.

It’s just that, you can’t really go berserk like in GTAO… One joke I keep on repeating is… What else can they add? Unicorns?

Still, I’m sure there’s creative people out there who could come up with great ideas for big updates so it’s a bit disappointing. I personally never really cared about it so I am little sussy to talk about it.

Oh well...

It doesnt really even sound like a big update though. Just some QOL improvements, Payout increases, Small additions to business and a couple new contact missions. The "Allow selling in private lobbies" Really freaking awesome though.

Would be nice if they allowed Private lobbies in RDO. With Full access to everything of course

@Pizentu Private lobbies had been great....

This is a thing they could have said already around the holiday 2021! I think they knew and had planned how to move forward with the game. So this small update is just a bugfix with barebone content. I hope at least we can change the difficulty on the missions we get....

And second I think R* know our frustration. Maybe they don´t like this new movement #RedDeadFuneral

Nah, I think there'll still be a big Winter update, but the buffs they are doing to GTAO might be an indication they're getting ready within the next year or so to start talking about VI and focus on it.

It is a shame about RDO, but I have a feeling there wasn't much motivation to work on an Online mode for a game that seemed to be more of a Story Mode passion project. I agree it could've been so much more, but it looks like they didn't think so, and if I'm right about them not being very willing to make much content for RDO, especially when parts of the RDO community didn't like some of the recent bigger updates, then I guess it's better to just... let sleeping dogs lie than working on something without any motivation or will. :/

It's a nice way to say no more major content updates are coming, just minor things. People still play (and enjoy) the multiplayer game I guess, and at the end of the day to the people in suits that is what matters.

Imagine having the audacity to post an article thanking the RDO community for its commitment and then in the very same article saying ‘we’ve moved all the recourses for this game on to GTA VI’. It’s sort of like there bribing the community by saying look we’ve destroyed this game but VI is going to be amazing chin up. Not everyone in the RDO community cares about GTA. We just wanted good updates for this game. It’s such a lame ass excuse.

Well at least someone grew a set of balls and let R* admit to it's community officially that it's now at end of life support.

GTA VI makes for a neat and tidy excuse but in the same article they're talking about brand new content updates for GTAO, which GTA VI will literally be replacing where as RDR2 and RDO is it's own thing. Yes yes, GTAO makes more money, so I sort of get it, but using VI to justify RDO's demise feels like a very hollow excuse to me. RDR2 and RDO didn't get an ounce of support for the next consoles, they offered zero support for players moving to other platforms which tells me RDO's demise isn't a new thing, it (as we all know) started two or three years ago now. Covid, GTA VI, whatever the reason(s) may be, at the end of the day to be honest I still fail to see how a studio of Rockstar's size could fail to find the resources to support RDO.

Such a gigantic shame, so much potential unfulfilled through nothing more than poor support and poor decisions. RDO failed simply and exclusively because R*/T2 didn't care about it succeeding from day 1.

It also hasn't gone unnoticed that they're starting to get a habit of posting bad news and following it up quickly or immediately with a mention of the next GTA.

i remember when red dead online was new back in beta i think. and they had a suggest ideas for new content form that you could submit. i remember giving so many ideas. and pretty much none of it was ever used. and i know many others submitted ideas too. i feel like that whole thing was just to make the fans think that they were listening. because im sure they could have found a decades worth of material from all of those ideas people sent. i just hope they save a lot of it and use it for the next red dead. i know most people already gave up on this game. and i don't really blame anyone. but i always had a sliver of hope. that maybe they might do some kind of revival or something. and when i saw the newswire article i got excited for a minute. but then it was obvious that they have no major plans for the game. its a real shame. and i hope they learn from their mistakes.

One big reason in the decline of RDO and focus solely on GTA franchise, is that R* had a loss of the most talented game artists.

Recently, what I'm aware of, Dan Houser, Leslie Benzies and Aaron Garbut has left the company...

(correct me if I'm wrong)

And as said before GTAO is the major cashcow for R*/T2...

The biggest missed opportunity of the last 10 years.

Unlike GTAO, which is completely dead to me, I want to play RDO. But I don't because there's nothing to do.

RIP RDO.

Rockstar could release tools for the community to create content. I think this online version of Red Dead was a waste. Very sad, it's a great game and the world is passionate and incredible. In the hands of the community we would have something better...

Took them long enough to respond. And again with the GTA 6 excuse. If the resources are problem, then why are they promising so many updates, talking about them in detail in interviews from many years ago? If that was the problem, then it's management's fault.

Either way, it's not important anymore. It's a good lesson for anyone that if Rockstar ever comes out with another non-GTA online mode, it's best to stay away from it. They can barely communicate with their fanbase, let alone support the game they created. At least now we have some closure. It shows how out of touch Rockstar is, they are even planning to introduce more telegram missions, as if anyone cares about those at this point.

Translation: We have abolutely no more ambitions for RDO and letting our smallest team work on some telegram missions and canned beans promotions while the the other majority of our devs will continue milking our beloved cashcow that is GTA Online. Oh and btw we're working on GTA VI. Cheers.

i wouldn't say that. sure the way rockstar abandoned rdo was stupid. but even if we got another non gta multiplayer. you could still play it and enjoy it. i would just say not to expect a lot in terms of dlc. red dead online has given me a lot of fun and great memories over these four years. before red dead online i think we all expected a lot from rdo. because of how huge gta online became and all the content it got. so we thought red dead would get the same treatment. but now we know that it won't always be like gta. if we got a new non gta rockstar game. and it has a multiplayer. i would try to enjoy it for what it is. and if by some miracle it blew up and got bigger. then that would be a great unexpected surprise. but im guessing that won't be for a very long time. considering gta 6 is still two years away at minimum. and even when it comes out gta 6 online will probably be milked for years.

As I said in another topic; they should release a "Swan Song" update that adds basic stuff like homes, Solo/Invite Only sessions and remove the timers. If the game is dead then let people make it their own.

Fair enough, good point. I didn't mean to say that I regret my time with RDO, in fact I enjoyed it a lot and I also have made good memories playing it. Hell, I am still planning to play it from time to time. I am just jaded by this whole situation because like many others I expected a lot from this game and I waited and waited... and it took me a while to realize it won't get any better. This game will forever be a showcase of untapped potential, and sadly nothing more, going forward. I had my fun with it though.

I will maintain skepticism towards any non-GTA multiplayer we may receive in the future, especially if it comes with promises, just like RDO. The broken promises are what annoys me the most about this game, I don't regret my time playing RDO at all. Quite the opposite.

Work was tiring enough, but (While a B&M of some sorts) here we go ...

WHY a company which have a workforce compared to other giant AAA multi-plat companies is unable to make OTHER content outside GTA ???

(While also being supported by another giant company).

People discussed for YEARS, how RDR II - RDR Online could had implemented newer content from roles and etc ... to even proper ways to monetize the game like and then again ... here we are ...

"But this game don't make money like GTA Online" Classic excuse fitting a company which is losing itself between a single IP.

This isn't a flawed AAA game like Ubisoft usually does ... WE are talking about the SECOND biggest game launch in the recent history, a game which alone is enough to make money comparing itself to multiple AAA games launch.

While indeed is kind of "limited" because of it's in-game era, this doesn't means this game didn't had potential. This game have, or rather saying HAD the biggest potential for evolution if comparing all other AAA launches of it's era and even beyond ...

It is fears because of what happened with Trilogy ??? ... (They saw it coming when they used a company which made sh*tty GTA ports).

Trying to squeeze the classics without spending too much ??? - ALL other AAA companies in the recent 4-5 years outside EA/Bioware's with ME: Legendary Edition and with EA/Stellar NFS: HP Rem failed to do a proper remaster/rework with acceptable quality and many tried to do without spending too much ...

Fears of a "Cyberpunk 2042" situation ??? - I'm sure they have ... but hey ... they will still sell the next GTA with or without issues (And break records i'm sure of that) ... so ... fears of ruining their company face ??? .... (after Trilogy fiasco and RDR, this is already enough).

GTA fanboys/RDR haters and etc ... seeing this movement from R* like a victory for the future™ ... but for me ... what they made with RDRII/Online is more of a warning ... is what R* became ... A company which is throwing every other game IP what made the company well-known for what it is today in the trash just for the sake of a single IP.

Max Payne Remakes/Remaster will have quality because Remedy is working on them, not R* Games and ...

Better change the name to Grand Theft Auto Games™.

R* had the damn kitchen, dining room ... the goddamn house in their hands with RDR II and somehow they f*cked up.

While the next GTA still some years from being launched ... i'm have my fears for that IP too ...

It is a bit strange, quite far away from GTA VI launch I reckon, and all they will do in the meantime with all their resources are some updates for GTAO and very very small ones for RDO.  I mean come on.

If not they go all in for GTA VI in order to release it quite a bit sooner then they would have in terms of development time.

I still have hope for the RDR series though, I mean the game is sales, and review wise a massive success. Other gaming companies would see it as a forever hallmark of excellence in that sense. It kind of makes me sad that RDR2 was developed by Rockstar in a way.

Think about how it could have been, had it been a flagship game of another company.
