Why did Rockstar decide to have more original soundtrack in GTA 5?

One thing that really stands out to me in GTA 5 compared to the rest of the series is it's heavy reliance on original soundtrack composed specifically for the game. Unlike the previous titles, where it was most of the time only the main theme for the game that was comissioned specifically for the game, in GTA 5 we often hear music in cutscenes, and more importantly for this post, gameplay.

What's weird to me is that Rockstar hasn't really often relied on this in the previous GTA games. The only one that I can think of is GTA: San Andreas with the C.R.A.S.H theme, but even then most of the other cutscenes and missions. don't have any unique soundtrack attributed to them.

Did Rockstar ever talk about this before GTA 5's release? I'm wondering what made them rely on music so much more. Could it be Max Payne 3 development? (can't speak for L.A. Noire and RDR1 since I haven't played those, idk if they include unique mission soundtrack)

I also don't really wanna count GTA: Chinatown Wars since it's a much more different situation there, the cutscenes were just comic panels with no voice acting, so they had to compose some music in order to make it not completely boring.

I remember them mentioning in some old interview they added it after seeing how well it worked out in RDR. You could see them kind of testing the waters at the end of TBoGT as well when Luis is parachuting to music.

Easily one of my top 3 moments in GTA games, it was so dope listening to that song while parachuting into Liberty City, knowing that everything is over, you're safe, and the GTA IV storyline has been wrapped up.

That seemed so out of place to me, like it never really was a thing before and after that (before V came out) it would never happen again, just music from off the radio playing randomly during gameplay. I honestly thought it was a glitch the first time I played it.

OT: Probably just to give it more of a cinematic feel, like how the rest of the movie feels like some kind of action movie

I f*ckin hate how it defaults to that annoying hard intense rock soundtrack whenever you have three star or more wanted level and even goes so far as to turn off the radio music that they payed millions of dollars to license if you get in a car with the active wanted level so that you have to listen to the obnoxious soundtrack if you're not actively thinking about turning on the radio

I don't mind it in missions but I wish they had kept that crap out of free roam

Not like you can just turn down the Score Volume while keeping the radio volume the same

Same here. I also play with music turned off.

I guess it was too much to ask for Rockstar to add separate sliders for speech, score and radio?

It's quite amazing to think of on how they really stand perfectly fitting on the game's moments, like The long stretch where it puts that adrenaline during the mission, this method really worked well.

There's just so many theme for it, and some even unused. Like greyhound.

You can use Enhanced Native Trainer to disable that, or script named No Wanted Music. Of course there should've been a setting for it.
