Hi there! This is a project that's been in the works for a while now but it is finally in a decent enough state where I can finally drop an initial WIP release!
Its goal is quite simple actually, it aims to make the HUD look nicer, I know that some people would solely replay the game because of that.

I hope you guys are going to enjoy this mod!

 

I would sincerely like to thank my friends who helped me out with the project because this wasn't going to be possible without their help.

 

Features:

  • A completely redrawn (in 4K) pause menu map, which is also used for the in-game radar.
  • High quality weapon icons, including the unused landmine's icon, for those of you that care.
  • 4K Fonts.
  • High quality map icons.
  • Fully redrawn empire racket icons.

And more potentially, hehe, I'll leave the rest for you to discover.

 

Notes:

  • Some of the textures might not look that good, I need feedback and if any of you want to contribute, please let me know. You can message me privately if you're interested.
  • There are a few upscaled textures, such as the pause menu background, the controller from the pause menu and the post card that's shown when the game loads in the next island. I didn't really know what to do with them so it is what it is for now.
  • The loading screens and legal disclaimers remain untouched, the main focus as of right now is everything that you see once you've loaded in.

 

Supported game versions:

  • As of right now, only SLUS-21590 is supported. If anyone is interested in porting over the textures to other versions, please let me know.

Installation:

  • Download your version of choice and unpack the textures folder to your PCSX2 folder. This requires one of the nightly builds so that you can replace textures. Once extracted there, fire up PCSX2, open your graphics settings, go to the advanced tab and turn on "Load Textures"
  • I personally have "Async Texture Loading" & "Precache Textures" turned on as well. These settings are optional but I do believe they'll make the experience even better for you.


Credits:

  • TareqGamer for redrawing both the map and the empire racket icons.
  • Parallellines for making the L1 and R1 icons, alongside massively helping out with fixing the in-game radar's alpha and splitting it into tiles/chunks.
  • djdarko for letting me use his 4K fonts (Click here to check them out).
  • Ryadica926 for the weapon icons, they were taken from Ryadica's VCS Styled VC, unfortunately though, Ryadica disappeared and I was unable to ask for permission.
  • SonOfUgly for some of the textures, I couldn't get in touch with them either unfortunately. Check out their HD UI texture pack for PPSSPP here.
  • Solidcal for testing it out, bearing with me through the journey and also helping me port over the textures because when I initially started working on it the only way to replace textures was to use Topaz’s plugin for PCSX2 which was unofficial and inefficient compared to the official tool that was implemented to PCSX2 somewhat recently.

 

 I truly do hope that me using some of Ryadica and SonOfUgly's textures is not going to be a problem. This is a non-profit project, aimed at giving VCS a bit of life.

I was planning on doing just that at some point, using the textures from Ryadica's ReLCS - it just really sucks that the guy disappeared, I would've loved to ask for permission. Another small issue is the fact that we don't have the map in higher quality, maybe my friend will be interested in redrawing it, no clue. Other than that, it is a possibility. I don't promise anything though, I've been pretty busy. As a matter of fact, I've yet to update this project.

I've tested here and it is really good. VCS PS2 has a lot texture mistakes (I remember the roads, mainly, and some buildings - not to mention the use of PSP textures, not PC). @Ash_735 did a great job fixing a lot of them for VCS PCE.

 

The only thing that annoys me playing VCS on PCSX2 is the draw distance - very short... IIRC @MAJEST1C_R3 manage to improve it on LCS for PPSSPP...

Yeah, I'd love to see the draw distance get improved. It is pretty bad.

There's a lot of settings that I'd personally would try messing around with in your case, them being auto flush, the half pixel offset, round sprite and maybe even align/merge sprite. Thankfully you can change everything while the game is running so testing is easy.

i've tried playing around with all possible settings, the ghosting is present in software emulation too, it just gets way more noticeable when upscaling. I think the only way is to remove whatever that thing is on a hex level (cheats).

It's a shame and really bothers me.. lcs, sa, vc and 3 does not have this problem (sa has others which are easily fixable)

You could also try experimenting with skip draw, it might be able to remove it. It can remove the ghosting in Bully, for those who don't want it. But it is not recommended either.

Awesome mod.  BTW I have found a few mods for the PSP version of GTA VCS which contain the main screen and the loading screens in HD resolution. Since those mods were made for the PSP version, they are already in 16:9 aspect ratio. So you can convert them for the PS2 version too. Here are the links

Are there some specifics to these textures?, I would like to try on my own to make XBOX buttons. 

Thing that caught attention, is that all those PNGs seems to be with half transparent, but in some screenshots they do look like have solid background (like in sample where you are buying business)

Its strange that all button images are shifted slightly, but seems there is nothing special about these images. 

Tried few files released by @Ash_735 seems to work without any issues. But to make VCS more XBOXy probably we need to edit some text lines as well, as there are quite in-game hits mentioning L1 L2 R1 R2...

I replaced artworks of the quad and jetski because i didn't found HD ones.

You mind sharing it? I would to do it myself but I barely know proper modding. It'd be a god-send if you'd share it.

This is dirty button replacement with xbox icons from GTA IV buttons.wtd, I think this one came from FusionFix.

Due to icons in WTD being 64x64, and textures exported in PCSX2 128x128 misplacements can be seen, I'm not that photoshop savvy when it comes to pixel perfect replacements.

Interesting that in texture folder, there is no O (B button) texture, meaning it doesn't appear in UI anywhere aside from gamepad control scheme menu. If so, then its strange.

Manu items for L1 R1 are left original ones, as 1) wanted to change letter buttons only 2) L1R1L2R2 used in hints often are displayed as simple text.

@Grumpy Cat any updates on your release for LCS? 

 

While there is little info about LCS files, I did found out that there is Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories - Decked Edition Texture Pack made by Dankaishin.

Can be found here : in video description. (While certain changes are questionable because of AI upscale use, but mainly for UI it does the job good enough)
