The Last of Us: Part I (Remake)

also afaik the remake has gone gold? so why don’t they drop any official gameplay? they could have easily prevented leaks by giving us gameplays. but maybe they knew that people would react badly, because there is like almost no change to the combat etc and didn’t wanted to drop any gameplay so early

honestly how they have been handling this “remake” and not giving us any offical gameplay etc really reminds me of the gta definitive edition and we all know how that turned out…

is this really gonna be a similar case/debacle to/like the gta definitive edition

this remake just feels just like a quick cashgrab, just like rockstar did with the definitive edition which is disappointing

Im just happy i finally get to the play the game for the first time ever, im a PC only guy so i never was able to play it. It sucks it will be released later for PC and not at the same time with the PS5 version. I will happily pay the 60 bucks, for me it's not a cashgrab. :D

I wish I was you. My past decade has been  mostly TLOU and GTA V.

The price isn't surprising honestly, Sony are charging full price for Spider-Man remastered on PC too - it's f*cking £55 in the UK on Steam lol.

Sony continuing to be shady as f*ck this gen.

f*ck them. I just spent my $80 quarterly budget on Forbidden West. Best purchase I ever made.

Watched this a couple hours ago. Look at the way they overhype the game with hyperboles. I was cringing throughout the video. I think they just confirmed there'd be no dodging, which is basically my "killer feature".

yeah literally nothing in this justifies a 70$ price tag.

then not giving joel the option to dodge is so damn weird, dude can fight and kill people, but can’t dodge?

i don’t even understand why people defend the price/the remake. literally nothing in their stands out as “amazing” to justify the price tag, i can just play the remaster version and have the same experience, perhaps even better. (some shots really look too bright or “too green” honestly, i prefered the more dark/gritty version) also remaster plays in 60 fps too, so fps it not even a argument and i don’t care about 4k

this could just be a reremaster or a “expanded and enhanced” version. really stretching the term remake at this point.

RE2 or Mafia 1 for example are damn amazing remakes (and mafia 1 only charged 40$)

also why is there no upgrade option like they did for uncharted 4? the only reason i can think of is because of money

it is a great opportunity for pc players to be able to play the last of us tho, hope you all fun, it’s a damn amazing game and one of my favorite games! i do wish it wouldn’t cost 70, 50 or 40 (or 30..) would be a better price for PC and PS5

$50 is the max I would pay for the Digital Deluxe. Also, even if they remastered the audio, it doesn't change the fact that they're reused and I could say the same for the reworked animations. I doubt they built them from the ground up since the OG animations still hold their ground. Even so, the animations still doesn't hold up to Part 2 standards.

This is getting silly now. So we aren't even allowed to criticize the remake or anything related to TLOU just because we love the game? I think the remake looks phenomenal and some of the gameplay additions are nice but they are relatively minor and in no way justify the exorbitant price tag. I've seen so much copium posts like this on the TLOU subreddit such as "Oh if ND add the dodge mechanic, people will shut up" or "Pricing is due to inflation". Why can't they just admit ND f*cked up here?

Don't get me wrong, I will still get this game on sale. And I still love both games dearly but I'm not going to be a blind fanatic. Criticism =/= being negative. The guy above is acting like people are being annoyed about the remake for no reason.... when the pricing is 70 dollars the concerns raised are perfectly valid.

And r/thelastofus2 isn't any better. That sub is another extreme where any slight praise of part 2 or the remake gets downvoted into oblivion. This fanbase is just two extremes yelling at each other. It's sad at this point.

Who cares about what goes on in Reddit?

Besides, it's just some people probably annoyed at the constant sh*tstorms by troll brigades and discussions in bad faith that lead to nothing.

I've seen that a few hours ago. Reddit nowadays is the new 9gag, except for a few good subs. As for r/thelastofus, they got people trolling discussions, even though it's mostly a review or a phenomenology of the game. The best way to avoid negativity in Reddit is to either cosplay or post memes; and non-offensive memes, mind you!

Also, Sony fanboys in particular can't take criticisms. I got a ton of downvotes just for criticizing the PS5's lack of 1440p support. I'm talking about fanboys and not PS5 users like most of us, anyway.

My worst experience on that sub was when I wrote a phenomenology why players have different views of Part 2 some people like it, some don't; some people think Abby is this, Ellie is that.... And all I got were trolls telling me. "No, that's not true. That's not what Part 2 is supposed to be." and nothing else as if I didn't just write why people have different perspectives.

That's what happens when the mods are too busy upvoting memes. Hell, they even removed my Amber Heard meme about Ellie's updated face.

A lot of mix feelings with this, it's visually stunning for sure and in terms of gameplay at least they confirmed some upgrades from Part II like physics and Motion Matching (still a shame there's no dodge mechanic, prone I can live without since levels were not made with that in mind but a dodge/block button why not ND?!) AI also seems to be improved but not in the level of Part II by the looks of it.

I think I saw the exact reply on the TLOU reddit.

A game that needed the exact same treatment as this remake is RDR 1. Precisely what Naughty Dog does here with TLOU, Rockstar should have attempted too. In the case of TLOU it's rather redundant, whereas RDR could have easily become a hit with a rehaul like this.

At least ND or whoever remade Part 1 exerted more effort than Grove Street Studio did on the Trilogy Definitive Edition.

I’ve been wanting to comment on this situation for a few days so here are the thoughts I’ve collected.

At first I was part of the “it’s too expensive” crowd, but after watching the gameplay trailer this hardly screams like a rushed together hackjob to make a quick buck like people are trying to paint it as. Some comments I’ve seen that say it looks no different to original or remaster have me puzzled, but opinions I guess..

I don’t know. I mean I get what people are saying and I don’t see anything wrong with criticisms, but I’m not a fan of the way the term “cash grab” is being thrown around blindly on social media.

If they were really trying to do that I guess they would’ve done what R* done before the Definitive Edition or Sega with Sonic Origins and delisted the original games off of storefronts and what happened?

Both had a rocky launch (Moreso the Definitive Edition, but you get what I mean). At the very least Naughty Dog/Sony are still giving people the option to buy the remaster or you can play it through PS Plus rather than forcing people ONLY to buy the remake which I agree would be scummy and very-anti consumer.

To me that suggests me Naughty Dog have full confidence in the remake because it’ll still sell extremely well regardless of the outcry on social media from a loud minority when the PC version launches and potentially pick up new fans when the show airs next year.

Anyway that’s enough from me. I’ve reconsidered and will be picking it up on release. Started a playthrough of Part II to get me into the mood.

It's weird how the industry works these days. EA, which we've gotten used to considering the Devil of the industry(for a valid reason, of course) came out with a more than solid Mass Effect trilogy remastered where the first game had an entirely redone, modernized gameplay to make it more accessible for new players and up the standards, so that the game doesn't feel as archaic when compared to the other two. Yet, they still consider it a simple remaster.

At the same time we have two Goliaths of the industry, Rockstar and Naughty Dog, coming out with their "remakes", lol.

I don't think it's a Cash Grab since I'm willing to pay $50-60 for it. But, $70 for the standard edition and $80 for the version I'm planning to buy is too much for me. If by any miracle they bundled Part 1 and Part 2 PS5 together, I might get them both for $80.

the thing is this is game is only like 9 years old, the ps4 version is still perfectly fine and holds up. its not like this is a game from the PS2 or PS1 era, which people have harder access too, like the TLOU Remastered version is included in the PS Plus collection and everybody with PS Plus on PS5 has access to it

so wanting 70 $ for a remake with graphic enhancements/animations etc and a couple of new "goodies" (like this new section with outfits etc, new workbench) is not really worth 70 bucks, especially considering you can just boot up the remastered version on the same console.

I really love TLOU, its one of my fav games. but i can't get justifiy a reason as to why this is really worth 70 $ (for me its 80€), especially since they don't add any important new features or perhaps even cut content stowards the game. its just the same game from 9 years ago, just a bit more beautiful and they probably change/update a few scenes a bit more because of TLOU 2 (like the doctor will probably not look like a random NPC anymore, but like the doctor from TLOU2) . if it was 40? i would buy it, these enhancements would be worth it to pay 40 (i think) but for 80? thats a no for me, its not a new game or anything like that, its a old game just as a remake.  (also we will see how good the graphic enhancements will look like, there where a  couple parts in the trailer where i honestly prefered the old version more, especially in the "dark" parts, they where a bit too brighten up, i wish they would have kept them "dark" even if that was probably because of technical limitations back than, i still prefered the darkness for these scenes)

especially if you compare this remake to other remakes like RE2, Mafia 1, these are better "remakes" for me.

also correct me if i'm wrong but afaik the Shadow of the Colossus remake price was 40€ around release and it provided similar enhancements (better graphics, animations etc) as the TLOU 1 Remake does, just that they made the price more appropriate.

but well, i will probably pick it up whenever it goes on sale, Uncharted Legacy of Thieves PS5 Version went on sale like 2 or 3 months after release, so i guess TLOU might be on sale by the time black friday rolls around.

With Mass Effect you couldn’t play it on modern PlayStation consoles because no backwards compatibility with PS3. Xbox players could but the games were old and ME1 was had outdated gameplay mechanics. They also included all the DLC for free except for a ME1 DLC that didn’t make it because they lost the source code for it.

We can already play TLOU1 on PS4/PS5. This remake is not going to include left behind unless you pay more for the more expensive version and I think there is no multiplayer. They’re also charging $70 for it.

The remaster still looks pretty good, but lets be honest. It's slowly starting to show its age because at the end of the day it's just a PS3 game with slightly better resolution. I was playing it last night on my PS5 and the thing I immediately noticed the character models still look...well like PS3 era character models. Then during the beginning sequence when Tommy, Joel and Sarah are driving I noticed quite a lot of pop in and when Joel's carrying Sarah through the streets I noticed character models phasing through eachother when they were running/panicking.

Now I understand why they feel inclined to bring it up to modern standards. As good as the remaster is it doesn't utilise any of the PS5's functionality like 3D audio, haptic feedback, adaptive triggers etc. AI is also being redone which to me is a big pretty deal since the AI is the original game was pretty bad and unreliable at times which was never touched in the remaster. Then again I've seen people with disabilities say the new accessibility options alone are worth it to them so I take it on a case by case circumstance.

To me the only comparable remake it makes sense to compare to considering the price/what's being done to it is the Demon's Souls remake which launched at the same price, but people were willing to spend the same kind of money on a remake of an even older game from the same generation that didn't really add anything substantial to its gameplay either yet they were fine with that.

It's up to the person what they want to do. I was formally in the camp of "I'll wait until it drops in price", but after seeing more of what Naughty Dog has shown instead of relying on some random leaker with a crappy, low quality video I've been swayed. At the very least I can take some solace in knowing it's going to be top shelf and of the highest quality possible. Too many AAA games nowadays (whether they're remaster/remakes or not) are stupidly overpriced and full of bugs, glitches, scummy monetization practices and so on and buyer's remorse quickly sets in. It'll be nice to get something that from what we've seen so far is anything, but that. Yeah it's a lot of money, but I've been burned as I'm sure many people have with far worse so it's refreshing to see a developer put some genuine love and care into one of its most beloved games..

Left Behind is included with the standard version though?

Also I'm assuming why there's no multiplayer is because they're doing stand alone multiplayer next year. It doesn't make much sense to force people into two multiplayer ecosystems unless it's free to play like COD: Warzone.

i don’t really get this, see the tweet:

they said the game is built from the ground up, overhaul etc etc.

why would prone have broken the gameplay? the game is built completely from the ground up, so how would this break the game if they completely rebuild the game?

isn’t a remake supposed to enhance the gameplay and improve it from the original game? like overhaul it..

i wonder how RE2 Remake or Mafia 1 was able to include all these new stuff and change camera etc without breaking the gameplay..

I think there's a big difference between 1:1 remakes (Demons Souls, Shadow of The Colossus, Destroy All Humans) and re imagined remakes (Resident Evil 2/3, Final Fantasy 7, Mafia DE).

I think I'm mostly sold in what I saw in that deep dive video, still shouldn't cost $70... $50 is more fair or bundled with a PS5 version of Part II would be more justifiable.

This is a 1:1 remake, then. Nothing is really reimagined like other remakes I played (FF7). Nothing was rebuilt, except they just updated the animations and graphics. Still not worth $70.

I agree with you on this. I love doing playthroughs of OG Part 1 and Part 2. The thing is, after playing Part 2, the original Part 1 just feels very clunky in that regard. Correct me if I'm wrong, I think Part 1 had a block and disarm mechanic right?

Also, Demon's Souls still has outdated animations, it sill plays like a PS3 game with fancier graphics. I think that's one of the reasons why people think those games are difficult. The animations and controls just sucked.

Only a few days before release. Can’t wait.

I pre-ordered it a few weeks back and bought a set of the Pulse 3D headphones just for this game.

I rarely if ever buy accessories for games, but this was an exception as I think the 3D audio will amazing especially for encounters with the clickers.

I wish I had a PS5 to play this. Waiting for the PC release now!

How does anyone think this "remake" is worth $70 or €80? I genuinely don't get it and I'm saying this as a big fan of Naughty Dog, I think Part 1 is one of the best SP games ever and I also really liked Part 2. Nevertheless, I'm definitely not paying €80 for a game which I already played on both PS3 and PS4. It doesn't even look that much better when compared to the PS4 version.

I’m not into PC gaming, but I’m always fascinated by the mods people comes up with.

Like Thomas The Tank Engine in the RE2 remake that replaces Mr X.😛

For anyone on PC who’s never played it before or hasn’t played in a while they’re in for a treat.

The thing that puts me off is Joel's weird crab walk. It looks horrendous in the remake! Also from the gameplay I've seen it is clearly NOT on par with Part 2 and that is what I hoped for!

I'll still buy it for PC when it's available. Meanwhile I'm replaying Part 2 on Grounded!

Yeah, I also hoped it would at least be on par with Part 2, but it doesn't seem like it to me. And even if it was, the price would still be too high.

So reviews are out now, but rather going on about the price debate or what constitutes a “remake” or not this is likely the best nuts and bolts analysis we’ll likely ever see from a professional source and it’s even more damning than I thought.

It however confirms one thing. The remaster and the original PS3 version for that matter don’t hold up under close scrutiny and when I watch the comparisons the remaster honestly looks terrible in some ways. Watch the parts comparing lighting, shadows etc to know what I mean.

As I said above when I was playing the remaster a few weeks ago it felt dated without comparing it to anything so it’s nice to know I was right. It isn’t a “little” better. It’s night and day. Hopefully my copy will come tomorrow because after watching this it makes want to play it even more.

On a side note. Hey R* this is how you should’ve handled GTA V and the Definitive Edition instead of being preoccupied counting figures from shark card sales.
