The Time Ranger
This is kinda an open ended topic, what are small features, additions or changes that could be implemented to existing/future games or genres that would smooth out the experience for you, small changes that would make a noticeable difference. Elder Scrolls: Skippable opening cinematic and tutorial mission, the ability to just create a fresh character in a new playthrough and just be dropped in the world. I've seen the dragon destroy Helgen too many times, it's a cool opening sequence but you eventually tire of it. I believe there are alternative start mods which are a similar idea but an ingame option would be cool. This could be relevant to other rpg's too. Gta: Bring back sleep mode, I like getting calls and messages but sometimes I just want to chill and explore without Brucie wanting to go boating, and I don't want my favorite clump of pixels getting upset that I said no. Mexicola9302
Wouldn't it make more sense if you post this in the threads of the games where it belongs? Creating a "Quality of Life" thread for all games in general, is a bit weird. Or just create a thread in the GTA IV subforum somewhere. Graven
My future implementation is global and harsh but the effect on quality of life is real, not virtual. I would force all game developers to install a "school schedule" add-on in their games. Simply put, you could only play 45 minutes nonstop. After that the game pauses for 15 minutes. Naturally you can't remove this life quality improving add-on without destroying the entire game. -l-

This reminds me of how the manuals in PS2 games would actively encourage this. Do new games still have warnings like these?

He happened to use Skyrim and GTA IV as an ice-breaker. And you claim it's "a bit weird" yet offered zero evidence to back up this claim. In future, perhaps report any threads you think might or are breaking the rules and let moderators and ledbys decide on the course of action. Otherwise, you can either contribute to the thread or ignore it. IMO, I don't think your post is very helpful (backseat moderating) and only makes people feel a bit self-conscious for posting or at least, that's how I'd feel. I say that respectfully and kindly On topic: Normally I'm full of ideas but I can't think of any at the moment. However, I will say Quick Resume on the Series consoles is an absolute game changer. Anyone that knows anything about user-centered design (or not) can agree it was very smart move on Xbox's part. The focused on a core quality of life improvement and that is getting the user to play games as quick as possible and essentially avoiding long loading times. I think it's a very under-discussed feature. What does a gamer want from their console? Games. What are some of the obstacles or barriers that occur between a gamer and their games? Loading times when booting up games. How do we mitigate this? Build a feature called Quick Resume that suspends games in the last state of play their where in, where possible. It sounds like a very simple and quite obvious thing and it many ways it is but the quality of life improvement is exponential. I can't remember how many times I sat down to play something like Odyssey and I sit down about to take out my phone expecting to wait for a bit but the game just resumes where I was last time with a few seconds. It's brilliant. On 6/2/2022 at 7:03 AM, Graven said: My future implementation is global and harsh but the effect on quality of life is real, not virtual. I appreciate the outcome you are looking for.. helping kids take breaks from things that can be addicting for a small minority of children. However, I think gaming time is a parental issue. I really don't think game developers ought to be acting as parents. A regular household can have family gaming time on a game for 2 hours each evening and have a healthy, productive life as the parents are parenting healthily. But imagine for them, a possible majority being penalized that their game stops for 15mins every 45mins. And why 45mins? Why not 2 hours? I don't see it being successful because a child might only be permitted an hour of gaming per evening. I can say an hour of gaming mixed with a healthy, balanced, lifestyle is fine but then they are penalized. But mostly, I think it's a parenting issue. And developers shouldn't be the arbiters of how you should parent your kids by baked-in technology. If this is the case, then shall we do it with movies? What about educational games and educational movies'? Jason
A general "QoL features I like/miss in games" thread is absolutely fine if you ask me. A big and obvious one is unskippable cutscenes of course, but pausable cutscenes is also a big one. Nothing worse than having to do something mid cutscene and not being able to pause it. Personally I play a lot of games with inventory systems and inventory management is something a lot of games get... shockingly wrong. The console UI's don't help but frankly they're no excuse these days either. Being able to split stacks, deposit a specific amount of a stack into a stash/bank, being able to drop or destroy things easily, showing too few things on screen and having to scroll for no reason and things like the lack of crafting material storage, meaning your inventory fills up with crafting materials making it more of a pain to navigate. flow_42 and The Time Ranger 1
Space Cowboy
When playing GTA/RDR or really any game that has lots of collectibles, I always thought it would be nice if each collectible that you collected was marked on the map afterwards. In my opinion, it would encourage more people to explore and find them on their own because normally a lot of people (if not nearly everyone) just follow a Youtube video/some kind of map to get them all. If the collected collectibles would be marked, people would have some sort of an idea where to look next. I am honestly surprised something similar haven't been implemented in open world games. Zelda: Breath of the Wild marks the collectibles in a similar way as I described, and it works splendidly. As someone who enjoys exploration a lot, I greatly appreciate this feature. I'm stuck on 49 and it the only option is to go through all of them again. Space Cowboy and flow_42 1 1 𝙼𝚄𝚂𝙸𝙲 𝙽𝙾𝙽 𝚂𝚃𝙾𝙿

On an off-chance you are playing on PC original version (i.e. not DE), you can run your save through some tools - back in the day I used "SAMA - San Andreas Mission Analyzer" and that would tell you the locations of missing collectibles, among other things. Maybe some other tools exist too, but it's been a while, so I don't know. GTA V has this feature on social club, sort of... but only for "classic" collectibles, even though I would appreciate it for the stunt jumps too, for example. Those are even harder to keep track of by memory, at least with collectibles you can see right away if it's there or not. It baffles me that so few games implement these features, it's as if they don't want the players to find the collectibles on their own. It was the crappy mobile port on Xbox. 𝙼𝚄𝚂𝙸𝙲 𝙽𝙾𝙽 𝚂𝚃𝙾𝙿

Not something you see often, though. The Time Ranger
