How did Lance know Tommy's name?

"I'll be watching you, Tommy"

Doesn't this one line give you the suspicions? IDK I might just be acting crazy but I don't ever recall Tommy to ever introduce his name to Lance in "Back Alley Brawl", he did in "Guardian Angel" (even though Lance already knows his name), that indicates a canonical mess-up. Just another weird details about VC's story I guess.

Thoughts?

The Vance family may have checked with the Forellis before doing the deal on who were going to meet them and they probably were told that Tommy, Sonny's trusted man would do thr deal with them. At least that's how I read it.

Ken also says this in "In The Beginning:
"I have talked to the suppliers and they are very, uh, keen to start a business relationship."

Maybe he revealed the names of the Forellis who are gonna be part of the deal? Maybe. I still find it unrealistic how Lance bravely says Tommy's name without even having a proper conversation to get to know each other and such.

@AkshayKumar has the right idea!

You've got to go right back to the beginning to figure out what happens.

The Forellis decide to get into the drug business in Vice City. They need a supplier. But their only real contact down there is Ken Rosenberg. They have to rely on Ken to arrange the deal in the beginning.

Ken has help from Colonel Cortez to put the deal together. Think of Cortez like a broker or a middleman. Ken approaches him with the proposition along the lines of: "The Forellis are looking to buy some cocaine. Can you find us a buyer?"

Cortez says sure. How much do they want and how much do they have to spend?

They agree that 20 kilos of cocaine is the right amount for openers. The Colonel instructs his people, very likely to be Gonzales, to make some calls and find a supplier.

Gonzales makes some moves around the drug market. He discovers that his old friends the Vance brothers are back in the cocaine business. They have a connection who is supplying them with coke on a regular basis. All they have to do is fly it from the source to their place in Panama and then smuggle it into Vice City for a profit. It's perfect. They sign up to sell the 20 kilos to the Forellis and they're very keen to do more business in the future.

Gonzales places a call with The Colonel and lets him know that the supplier has been arranged. Unfortunately, he also places a call with Diaz and informs him about a deal going down at the docks.

The Colonel meets with Ken and gives him the good news. Ken goes back to the Forellis and tells them everything is ready to go. The Forellis whisk Tommy away from Liberty City before his reappearance offends anyone. They supply him with the money and some muscle. The plan is that Tommy buys the cocaine in Vice City and transports it back to Liberty City where the Forellis can double their money.

But it doesn't work out that way. Tommy barely escapes the deal with his life and ends up having to hunt down the money and the drugs.

And this is where we can answer your question.

Lance is going to find himself in the same situation as Tommy. Only Lance is better connected. Remember -- Tommy is new in town. He has to rely on Ken to tell him what to do. Lance gets to skip all of this and get down straight to business.

But imagine Lance follows a similar path to Tommy. He ends up in a sleazy motel and checks in with his Panama connect. Lance can't pay him for the stolen cocaine and the connect threatens to kill him if he doesn't make it right. He visits Gonzales. He visits the Pole Position Club. He roughs some people up. He uses his contacts to piece together all of the information above. He learns the name Tommy Vercetti along the way. He also learns the name Leo Teal.

Leo becomes the main target. Tommy might be useful later on, but I doubt Lance ever suspects him of being involved in Vic's death. Leo is the main guy in the frame for the ambush - but unfortunately for Lance, he finds the other guy beating him to death before he gets a chance to interrogate him properly. Tough luck, baby.

Hope this gives you some answers. Now I feel like writing a Lance Vance DLC! :D

Comrade Monke

Honestly Lance was probably a Forelli agent from the beginning that's my theory at least

I'd like to think this is some plot hole or some development change.

In Back Alley Brawl if you left Lance behind, game says, you left "Lance" behind. The problem is game didn't introduced Lance's name to player until Guardian Angel. (This is more like a development issue than a story)

Later, in also Back Alley Brawl, Lance says "I'll be watching you Tommy" without Tommy revealing his name to Lance and Tommy gave zero f*cks how did Lance knew his name.

In Guardian angel, Lance finally reveals his name and so is Tommy.  The thing is why would Tommy reveals his name twice to Lance since Lance called him Tommy once.

So here's few things, what could it be.

In beta, Back Alley Brawl dialogue was different. Maybe Lance and Tommy introduced their names in that mission. But later Rockstar changed the dialogue and didn't paid attention to they haven't introduced Tommy's name to Lance.

Rockstar was high as f*ck and didn't know what they wrote at all and rushed things.
