Red Dead Redemption 3: Story Idea

Instead of Following Jack after the west has died (terrible idea TBH), playing as Dutch Hosea, or Sadie Adler I want to share an idea of what it could be (or just what I imagine it as to completely finish the Van Der Linde story.)

Red Dead Redemption 3 (or Red Dead Reprisal)

Completely new map. Point of this game is mainly survival in philosophy, family is everything and no honor among outlaws

The game takes place in 1885 and is focused on two brothers, Mac and Davey Callander. They're drifters, robbing stores here and there throughout the country, they're essentially freelance gunslingers, hopping from gang to gang, usually robbing them blind after hitting large scores with them, in the process making many powerful enemies.

Mac is more level headed, leaner bodybuild similar to John in RDR2, with blonde hair. Davey is a taller, violent brawler type that makes bad decisions that Mac always has to deal with and lands them into trouble.

(to get an idea of their relationship it's similar to Tarantino & Clooney in Dusk Til Dawn, or to a lesser extent Hosea and an unintelligent Dutch)

(Concisely) Chapter 1:

Early on in the game the brothers join up with a local gang (Hepburn Boys) for higher chance of a successful bank job, the planning goes through well, Mac & Davey are the money carriers as instructed, they load up the bags filled with 10K (5K in each bag).

as they're heading out, lawmen are waiting and among them is Landon Ricketts

Ricketts, fires a trick shot into the bank doors and hits Davey in the shoulder, while the other Hepburn gang members are engaged in a firefight, Mac & Davey carry on with their anticipated plan and leave with one of the bags (Davey dropped the other).

Word gets back to Hepburn and now they're dead men for being traitors and wrongfully accused of ratting (they aren't and don't care anyway because the plan was always to rob them).

Mac & Davey ran off to the next state, living in an abandoned small house, Mac leaves Davey with the money and heads into town to get the necessities for his wounded shoulder (Davey will stay at "camp" until healed through story) and this is where chapter 2 starts.

(concisely) Chapter 2:

Minutes later Mac pulls into town, stops a robbery from happening in the general store and as a thank you the owner offers 10 free items, you end up becoming friends with the shopkeeper. There's a secret stranger mission where if you go into the saloon immediately after this you'll trigger a cutscene and see a younger Micah Bell getting drunk, and antagonizing everyone. (You cannot interact with him in anyway).

You head back and patch up Davey's shoulder and he has 3 in game days before he's back to normal and can be brought (optional) along on certain missions where he can be very useful. In the meantime, you can do bounty hunting and many stranger missions in the area. Many townfolk mention Dutch and Hosea (by description and how those smooth talkers robbed the town blind a couple months back)

Mac gets annoyed at the realization the town is pretty much broke after being targeted by multiple gangs and decides to go elsewhere, he and Davey are actually well liked in this chapter's town (lol), some point the local sheriff finds out who Davey is judging by his stature, shoulder wound and their safe house and tries to arrest Davey, but is killed by the brothers forcing them to keep moving, the bag of cash is missing after Davey stupidly left it unattended.

(concisely) Chapter 3: again traveling to another town that tooks days to reach, they're camping out in the woods, forced to actually hunt for survival, they come across another gang that takes them in (Bollard Twins Gang from RDR1), the two gang leaders unseen from RDR1 are finally revealed and this particular gang are rivals with the Hepburn Gang from Chapter 1. Mac devises a plan to start a war between the two from the inside to throw the attention off of Davey and himself. with this gang in this chapter you're living similar to RDR2's camp mechanic, can talk and play games with other members.

One of the Bollard Twins are caught by lawmen and you have to help rescue him as the final chapter mission, after rescuing him he reveals a Hepburn gang member was also in custody with him that basically said Mac and Davey rode with them, now they're suspected as spies from their rival gang and are about to be tied up and gutted in a nearby cave, the brothers escape and kill most of the Bollard gang members with their advanced fighting skills, while the gang Leaders escape.

Now with even more enemy gangs after them, Mac is starting to worry a little bit, Davey isn't worried at all.

Chapter 4:  you play as Davey, doing a lot of cold-hearted things, bar fights and drawing even more attention. it's revealed Mac went to Canada to visit his very young daughter he left behind (off camera, we find out due to a note left by Mac, as read by Davey)

From the moment you gain control of Davey you notice his honor is 100% negative from the get-go. basically just the adventures of Davey in her another new town (big as St Denis).

Chapter 5: Months later, Mac returns, the player is switched back to Mac, you find Davey and he tells you about these guys he's been hanging out with in the local bars, they're smart and have a plan, this could be the life changing job they need, Mac hears him out and he brings him to meet Dutch, Hosea and Young Arthur. They plan a bank robbery in this big town and it's a success, they celebrate, one night they're attacked at camp by the Hepburn Gang, the entire Van Der Linde Gang runs down on them and finds THEIR hide out and ruthlessly eliminate them.

Chapter 6: Living in the Van Der Linde Gang camp, meeting Grimshaw, John, Abigail etc. plus new members we've never seen before.

Glory days. Davey gets captured by police, the gang breaks him out so now they're all wanted. Dutch kills one of his gang members that was proven to be a rat.

Epilogue: Mac and Davey Callander become NPCs and you play as young Arthur in 1889.

i like the general idea. but i feel like the chapters need to be fleshed out more. but as a basic outline of the story it sounds great. it would be cool to get to see mac and davey. it sounds like this hepburn gang would be like the odriscolls in rdr2. if you can think of more to add to the story please do.

Wouldn't it be better if we get like a random young farmer, who has financial problems, and steps to the way of an outlaw on a completely new land with new people, instead of the van der linde boys again? No offense, cause I like the idea of imagining a story, but to be honest, I never understood why Mac and Davey are so interesting, they are just names mentioned.

Yeah it was just a summarized version that anyone can fill in with their own ideas, just wanted to get people to actually read it lol

Similar to how Arthur just popped up out of thin air for the prequel. We only know the name of Mac and he was in the gang, that's about it.

Also I tried to make connections to RDR2's lore that some people may have missed

Examples: The Rat Dutch killed one time that Arthur talked about, is killed in this story.

Ricketts being present in two bank robberies involving the Callander brothers

Ricketts shooting Davey in the robbery and him (I assume) shooting him in the blackwater heist causing him to die of blood loss in RDR2.

The brothers learning loyalty because of The Van Der Linde gangs familial way of life. (Or Dutch's charisma)

Dutch kills the Rat in Chapter 6 vs siding with one in RDR2

I just thought it seemed like something Dan Houser would come up with it he was still at R*, lol.

I like your story concept of jumping from gang to gang, making friends and betraying them later (just like Micah), I'm just wondering why you chose the Bollard Twins gang, isn't your story supposed to be on a brand new location? The Bollard Twins gang main location is New Austin and it was founded sometime between 1907 and 1911, not matching with your story which is set between 1885 and 1889, with this in mind I'd change this gang for a brand new one and everything else would be fine.

Had no idea, oh well, think of it all as placeholder (gang names, town names)
