Video Game playthroughs that were ruined by spoilers

I don't think there was ever a topic for this. And if there was, please merge this one.

Consumers of other types of entertainment media can't really emphasize with us in a way we deal with spoilers because we consume or get consumed by the story with more immersion and attachment to characters. However, since the normalization of Social Media, a lot of people have become jerks and thought it was cool to tell the world how much they saw, played or knew about a particular plot point. But, this is not about them mainly. This is about the video games that you could have enjoyed more were it not for the spoilers. So, I'll start it off.

Red Dead Redemption 2

- I was just tryna watch how the gameplay would be, watched a bit of the storyline and for some reason Youtube recommended me clips/videos with spoilers in the title. Nevertheless, I just pushed through knowing what'd happen to Arthur, but I still left most of the story unknown for me.

The Last of Us Part 2

- I was dumb enough to stumble upon leaks of this game's plot and was even dumber to read through a few even though I was aware they were potential spoilers. I was avoiding the game like crazy upon release and for some reason Youtube thought it was cool to recommend me videos with spoilers in the title and cutscene pertaining to you-might-know who's death. To add insult to the injury, a relative of mine who's known for spoiling movies and sharing leaks so he'd look smart told me some crucial points in the storyline which was somehow misleading.

Grand Theft Auto V

- Same as the two above. This was the first game Youtube spoiled for me.

Modern Warfare 2019

- Spoiled myself intentionally. But, I still enjoyed the campaign on my first and 2nd playthrough.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake

- I was reading a blog on Final Fantasy 7 Part 2 and the writer thought it was a good idea to tell the readers that it was 2 years since a particular character died. I stopped playing since then, even though it was mainly the VO that cringed me off the game.

Will add more after I get this topic running.

The only one I can think of was Red Dead Redemption. I unwillingly found out about John's demise quite sometime before it occurred.

It was still an intense and emotional moment because I only knew he died rather than how it was done, but still it soured the experience somewhat so since then when a new game comes around I usually avoid Youtube and social media outlets like the plague until I'm done playing it.

Are spoiler tags really necessary for a 12 year old game that the large majority of this forum has probably played anyway? It's not like Red Dead Redemption came out last week.

Sadly I think every game I played I ended up reading spoilers about.

This is why I go through internet blackout a week or two before playing a game or watching a movie. Youtube is the sh*ttiest, most insensitive source of spoilers, other than awful humans.

Funny thing I have a friend who used to be a fan of Horizon Zero Dawn through Youtube. He recommended the game to me, and I felt the urge to ask him about the lore and the story. He told me everything down to the fact that Aloy was some kind of reincarnation of Elisabet and I was still clueless about what he was talking about until I played through the game. His spoilers were in fact thrilling enough that it kept me engaged instead. XD

University of San Diego apparently wrote a paper and all on how for some people spoilers enhance their experience

There is this video about it too (warning apparently there are Game of Thrones and Star Wars spoilers in there though I did not watch it)

I have a nasty habit of ruining the plot for myself in advance be it video games, TV shows or novels. I haven't played too many games tbf but I don't know if that makes it worse that I spoiled all the few games I played for myself 😅

I know someone who likes finding out plot points to enhance their experience, but I'm more selective with details.

I'm generally good with avoiding significant spoilers in games I'm playing so it's never been a big issue, but I did have RDR2's main story ending spoiled directly through moderating this forum (troll accounts), but I had been expecting it to play out that way due to RDR1 + an early reddit leak. As a result I genuinely don't think it impacted my enjoyment of the game much if at all, as RDR2 is a game all about the journey for me.

Beyond that I can't really recall any major spoilers I got spoiled on, when a game I want (or film) comes out I go out of my way to avoid spoilers so I'm usually good. Only time I'm not is when they spoil stuff in trailers, which is why I watch less trailers these days - especially ones released close to release as they often are the most spoilery.

I can't think of many instances where I've been spoiled, but I have to say I don't mind spoilers that much (in games or elsewhere) and generally they don't ruin my enjoyment at all. One instance where I have been spoiled was RDR2:

Spoiler

I saw some scenes of Arthur being visibly sick, dying and I learnt that he gets sick and eventually dies

In hindsight I can confidently say that knowing these details didn't ruin my enjoyment of the story at all. It's just a small detail(s) in a very large game, and it's not like I watched an entire playthrough before playing through RDR2. That would likely ruin it for me, but I often feel like people take even minor spoilers way too seriously. Your enjoyment shouldn't depend on whether you know some details beforehand or not. You're experiencing the whole game, and the idea that you may know that this or that character dies ruins the whole game for you is a bit strange to me.

Of course I would never spoil anything to anyone, knowing that the majority seem to care about it.

Oh yeah, I saw similar study some years ago. I am definitely one of those people, although I don't go out of my way to spoil something for myself. I just don't really take it as seriously as others may do. 😛 It's an interesting topic for sure.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Fallout 4. The main quest's plot twist was spoiled almost everywhere when it released.

I was lucky enough to play the first Red Dead Redemption without spoilers. Mind = blown. Same with The Last Of Us.

For real. I'm mostly in it for the journey, that's why I also love to gather some details on what the journey will be about. But, I take spoilers on characters' lives seriously, though. It's a little quirk I have since I really care about how the characters impact the journey.

TBH, when it comes to Fallout or Skyrim, I couldn't care less about the story at all, not because they have  obviously weak storytelling, but it's just that the choices are overwhelming.

I was also spoilered on John Marston's death back when the game first came out, although it was by choice since I didn't think I'd ever be playing RDR1 back when I still had my PC. AS for The Last of Us, I was lucky enough to not care about it when it came out. Best storyline ever.

I accidentally spoiled the ending to GTA v by looking at the GTA wiki on franklins character to find out how old he was. Had I just waited 1 day I would’ve beaten the game spoiler free. But 16 yo me wasn’t thinking straight smh

Is this The Guy?

Spoilers aren’t a big deal for me but Last of Us 2 was ALMOST ruined by the huge reveal spoiled before the game came out.

After the initial shock wore off though it wasn’t too big a deal and didn’t matter anyway because I ended up really enjoying the game.

My experience with TLOU 2 was still great after seeing spoilers considering how complex the story was. Abby's story was mostly fresh to me and I kind of liked her unprejudiced after I finished her story.
