AkshayKumar
A sequel to James Cameron's Avatar (2009), The Way of Water is set a decade after the events of the first film. It follows the story of the Na'vi, Jake Sully, Neytiri and their new family. Seems the movie has performance captured scenes recorded underwater. Releases December 2022. I watched the original Avatar in the theatre all those years ago, back when the whole 3D mania had gripped theatres. Will be interesting to see if Way of the Water does similarly mad in the box office. Three more sequels are planned.
Big Molio
I trust James Cameron to deliver a competent enough sequel. He won't just churn any old sh*t out. That said, it will have been 13 years and the world has moved on from Avatar. My thoughts on it also is that Avatar worked as an event movie. It was superb as a a one shot cinema experience. IMAX, 3D, all of that. Almost like a theme park ride. When you watch it again on the small screen, it is a derivative, cheesy film with some awful dialogue in parts. Not sure it stands up. I'll watch this new one though. AkshayKumar
Tacymist
I remember all the hype for the first movie, and tbh I was hoping it would flop back then so I wouldn't have to hear about it anymore. I never went to see it in theaters, but I did watch a DVD of it and my demeanor toward the film changed. I had a lot of fun watching it and have watched it again a few times since. Anyway, I've known of this water themed sequel for years, I really look forward to seeing it, whenever that may be. I doubt I'll be seeing it in theaters but who knows. I hope there's some crazy alien sea monster things though. AkshayKumar
Big Molio
The thing I wonder about though is what the hook of this new film will be, now that the actual ‘avatar’ element for Jake Sully is no longer there. The most interesting part of the original is the high-concept idea of humans being linked via machinery to the genetically grown avatars. Sully is no longer a human because he transferred his consciousness permanently into his avatar via that magic tree at the end. I suspect that we won’t see the actual Sam Worthington at all then. I always thought that a better science-fiction type ending for the first film might have been an epilogue showing an older Jake Sully avatar, with an older Neytiri and some children, leaving food outside the door of that mobile link-up cabin, now all overgrown with vines and leaves. The scene would then cut inside to show an old human Jake Sully, with a grey beard, lying in the machine, suggesting that he had been there for years. Jason
Avatar is generic as they come as previously said, but I did see this trailer in 3D when I went to watch Dr Strange 2 a while back and as a 3D cinema experience it looks reeeeeeeeeally cool.
