IzzyBlues
2 minutes ago, Jason said: I think the intention is to a BotW-like Sonic game, but they seem to have forgotten... it's Sonic. An open world Sonic game shouldn't be an incredibly generic realistic looking map with some platforms and rails seemingly randomly placed around floating in the air. That's some genuinely shockingly bad level design. The whole map should be a platforming level, using the terrain to get to places using Sonic's movement and speed which should be physics based instead of mechanic based (rails, speed pads). Instead, it's a sh*tty map where they've dotted some stuff about for you to be able to use some very mechanic driven movement. From leaks the gameplay loop is supposedly > run about the open world (which leakers say is terrible) to earn orbs which unlock portals which lead you to some classic Sonic levels which are apparently actually quite good. The whole thing looks like a tech demo from the PS3/Xbox 360 era lol. Dan Houser's personal barber
Jason
Yea as a way to show the game off proper for the first time it's complete garbage. I've seen some warming to it but seriously... for a game centered around a character that runs and spins around at superspeed the map couldn't further away from what an open world Sonic game should be lol. There should be canyons, ramps, loops, valleys and all sorts in the terrain that use to build up momentum to speed and fly across the map.

If Sega still expects to ship Sonic Frontiers in late 2022, we might be in trouble already (the Sonic Origins pre-order bonus reveal isn't doing them any favors). Forces was a pretty underwhelming experience (with the character customization tool being probably the only highlight), we don't need another disaster like Sonic '06 or Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric that could potentially put the hedgehog into another dark age. Is it too much to ask for a consistently good Sonic game from them? Sega should delay the game to next year, at least. Commander S
This just looks cool - Rollerball by way of Tony Hawk and My Friend Pedro, with the same rendering style as Sable, and made by the OlliOlli devs? Noice. And it's apparently only a 6-month timed exclusive, so it should be out early-ish next year on Xbox (and maybe Switch?). Jason
Anyone else sorta... not sure what to expect once the shows begin? Feels like all the major publishers have their next games announced and most still aren't coming this year, and I still expect some of those penciled in for this year like Hogwarts to slip into next year. Feel like the industry is in a weird spot now with all the delays, we're near two years in and it feels like the generation still hasn't gotten started yet. Not even sure what to expect in terms of announcements at this point, and gameplay for games a year away doesn't get me going anymore. Suppose my only dream announcement right now is for Sony to announce HFW for PC at the PC Gaming show lol.
Jason
https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/geoff-keighley-says-summer-game-fest-will-be-primarily-focused-on-announced-games/ "“What I would say is that a lot of the games we’re going to show you are going to be [already] announced… games are going to show new content to you, like some of the ones I’ve mentioned,” he said. “We’ve got a couple of new game announcements in the show and hopefully some surprises if everything holds. But it definitely is a show that’s primarily focused on stuff that is announced.” He added: “So we’re doing some good stuff for you, but definitely manage your expectations in terms of the megaton shocks that you’re expecting. This is not The Game Awards. We’ve got lots of good stuff to show you but buyer beware of some of the crazy rumors I’m seeing out there in terms of things people expect to get announced.”" I really don't mind Keighley but he's been trying to (and has, really) to kill E3 for yonks so he can replace it with his own show and now that show isn't the main source of announcements, cause apparently The Game Award'ss are, which is news to me. Not to mention the show is apparently nearly 2 hours long and full of guests and stuff, which is exactly what people hated about the bad E3 conferences. Not expecting much at all from the Summer Game Fest then.
Mister Pink
I'm hoping to see; Skate 4, Skull & Bones, and Solar Crown. They're all announced and in development for some time and might make an appearance. Xbox is having their Sunday 12th gig but on the 14th they're having a second showcase that will do more of a deep dive on some of the announcements made in the 12th and have new trailers! Sony's State of Play was really enjoyable so it has my hyped for the Xbox showcase. The 14th show is 90mins and possibly the first one. I think Keighley said that Xbox are probably saving their biggest hits for the 14th. So, don't expect Starfield to show at this Sunday's gig. Commander S
After the delay announcement, I suspect that Solar Crown isn't going to be there, and instead we'll get more info (maybe early sneak peeks of gameplay, quite likely stuff like concept art) at Nacon Connect in July. I wonder if CDPR will start the ball rolling on the marketing for Cyberpunk's (possibly only) expansion - they've got that down as "H2 2022" (with the expansion coming at some point in 2023), and I'd imagine that it'll quite likely be at the Game Awards, but with the "Edgerunners" Netflix show being shown off on Wednesday, maybe they'll use that as a way to segue into teasing the DLC. Tease/update for "Nivalis", a slice-of-life-ish follow-up to 2020's Cloudpunk: I'm guessing that'll be on Friday, since that's the "Day of the Devs" indie showcase. Commander S
Welp: according to Jeff Grubb, two of the games that won't be in Microsoft's showcases are ...Fable and Perfect Dark. PD could have gone either way, IMO - I wasn't expecting anything major, but maybe a more indicative CGI trailer, if only as a recruiting tool (because that's still the main purpose of those 'zero gameplay' trailers, after all - a holdover from the days when E3 was an industry trade show, and not trying to present itself as 'SDCC, but for games'). As for Fable, that makes me think it's aiming for 2024-ish, and won't get revealed until next year - although it's not unreasonable to think it might get revealed this time next year, and come out by September (like AC Odyssey in 2018, or ...every single Forza Horizon game). I'm going to jinx things, and assume that no mention of Contraband = we might get a look at Contraband... Also, there's apparently been a leak stating that there'll be a Nintendo Direct on Wednesday 15th - I'm guessing that's probably going to be the likeliest place to see an update on Bomb Rush Cyberfunk. Jason
Fable's not surprising, there's some reports that Playground are struggling a bit with their engine and stuff and while I have no worries over those reports as of now (game dev is never plain sailing lol) I do feel like Fable's probably a bit further out than most expected. If they have Avowed and Starfield though, oof, could be a great show. Commander S
Commander S
I get the impression it's less an EA, "put Frostbite in all the things!" situation (i.e., the engine just isn't suited to the kind of game being made), and more akin to why BioWare stuck with their modified version of UE3 for the Legendary Edition re-release, rather than UE4 - the engine is solid enough for purpose, but still needs a whole lot of bespoke features built on top (and in the case of ME:LE, it was quicker to stick with the existing engine). Forzatech has real potential, but I can totally see them running into scenarios where something new has to be built into it in order to facilitate something necessary for an RPG like Fable - and you only find out what you need in those scenarios by realising what you don't currently have. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Better to take as much time as needed, and wind up like BioWare by the end of the ME Trilogy, where their in-house modified version of UE3 was versatile enough to let them do whatever, instead of doing a Mafia III or Cyberpunk, or like the earlier Saints Rows (1 and 2), where the hasty engine modifications ended up with some messy contraption that'd need stripping down and reworking next time (and in the case of CDPR, they've just thrown up their hands and moved over to UE5). Personally, I'd rather see Forzatech get the chance to evolve and be capable of a wider variety of projects, rather to be yet another in-house engine that gets ditched in favour of Unreal - it'd be a real waste, and I'm also rather leery about the prospect of game engines becoming ever more homogenised. Jason
Well I can see why Geoff tried to temper expectations pre-show and at the start of the show. That was dreadful. Some interesting looking indie games but from an AAA perspective, absolutely awful. Naughty Dog getting on stage to give an update on the TLOU MP experience and all they bring is Concept Art? Literally feels like they brought that last minute cause TLOU Part 1 leaked lol. DEADWOODZ and DODI3OG
