What actually happened with the Director Mode actors before director mode was added?

I'm currently playing PS4 version 1.0 (reinstalled the game offline) because I wanted the authentic experience without all of the extra weapons, cars, and world-breaking radio stations from online forced upon me (please Rockstar, I beg you please make it possible to opt out of these extra features from online, while still keeping the ability to use director mode, use the social club checklist, train chop to find collectibles, and all of that stuff) does anyone know the best way to contact them to at least give them the idea for this?

 

Anywho, Im wondering what the director mode actors actually did in the PS3 version, and in the 1.0 PS4 version. I am able to encounter the characters, and talk to them, but I don't get any notification about unlocking them, or anything like that. Does the game register anywhere that I've talked to them? Were these basically just treated like random events back then?

Yes, they had no real purpose outside of livening up the game a bit.

Were they in the ps3 version? Also, do you know, if I meet them all and then update my game, if I’ll have them?
