Blablabla69420
Let me explain So, wanted levels are in every GTA game, but they always know your location. Here how: GTA, GTA 2, GTA London: in a top down game, trying to hide from cops is pointless. The game just spawns them in front of you if you're on a road. GTA 3: 2 Stars? too bad! The only way to evade wanted levels higher than 1 star is bribe stars or the pay n spray. They always know your location. GTA vice city: Same thing as GTA 3 GTA San andreas: A bit interesting. Your wanted level does actually decrease if you're away from cops, but stops at 3 stars. Still, the game cheats and spawns cops near you. GTA 4: The most obvious. You'd think they don't always know where you are, but they do. For example, if you have a six star wanted level, and are on the edge of the heat zone(search area), The Cops stick around even if you weren't seen there, and for no damn reason come to your hiding spot. Their "search mode" is just them pretending. Even if you switched cars and got in an alleyway, they still find you. GTA 5: STILL happens. They'll get out of their car, slowly come to your location and find you. And you'd be lucky to lose your wanted level first. summary: The police always knows where you are. You can run, but you can't hide. Xane_MM
MrBreak16
I thought this would be a post about how the cops show up to arrest you after you murdered a guy in the middle of the wilderness. StreetLife101

Ooooor by saving the game and reloading your new save. What is the point of this thread again? MrBreak16
Americana
They don't really know where you are in Grand Theft Auto IV. You can hide in an alley and they won't know. Zello, billiejoearmstrong8, MrBreak16 and 3 others 4
Lock n' Stock
The wanted system could use a major refinement in GTA VI. And I don't mean upping their aggression like V did. MrBreak16

Their "search mode" is just them pretending. Even if you switched cars and got in an alleyway, they still find you. I disagree with this. I've had several occasions in GTA IV where cops were looking for me but failed to find me. For example one time I hid up the stairs from my apartment in Bohan. They kept coming in and out of the building looking for me but never happened to look up there for 20+ minutes. Another time I was having a wild goose chase with them going in and out of apartment buildings. Ended up standing on a ledge above a door, and a fat cop walked out of it below me. I thought I was caught for sure (if it was GTA V he would know I was there and simply immediately turn around and shoot me) but I got lucky - he didn't happen to turn around so he never saw me and never knew I was there, and jogged off swearing he was going to find me, and I jumped down and escaped. Of course since you have to escape the wanted zone to lose your wanted level they would probably always find you eventually since they'll keep looking indefinitely. But they do actually have to search and find you. In GTA V they ALWAYS know exactly where you are and make a bee line for you wherever you hide - the exception being areas they don't spawn eg tunnels. The only way they fail to find you is if the waiting time for your wanted level to expire happens to run out before they get to you. I'm pretty sure in IV they know your general area but are actually searching within it to some extent, allowing for them to randomly sometimes not find you. I think they actually have to see you to know exactly where you are, whereas in V they just always know with psychic powers. It's evident during car chases as well. The amount of heat on you varies a lot in IV because it relies so much on whether cops happen to go the right way and see you trying to escape or committing more crimes, or on if patrolling cops are around to join in. Sometimes you can even get away with getting a wanted level, then just speeding along the sidewalk mowing pedestrians down and not only not increase the wanted level but even lose it, just because cops didn't happen to catch up to you/go the right way/be around to witness the crimes. Or they might see you and you might end up with more wanted stars. But in V with no patrolling cops and cops already knowing your exact location at all times, all randomness is removed and it's just the same automated predictable chase/wanted level raise every time. But they do actually have to search and find you. The thing is, my experience is a whole lot different. I hid in the diner in hove beach, Cops kept coming in and out, not investigating other parts of the search zone, surrounded the diner and i pretty had to run out of there. Also hid behind the planks near roman's cab building, they kept running around, driving in the area, eventually came to the planks for no reason and i got seen. and even worse when I hid behind a concrete barrier highway guardrail. Even though my "last seen" was far away. Cops drove to the highway, got out and kept standing on the other side. Keep in mind the barrier was crouch height, so i couldn't sneak away. This one cop comes in, walks over the bridge, to my side and spots me. Why did he do that? No idea! While the cops in IV don't have psychic powers, I'm convinced they've put a tracking chip on Niko to know wherever he is in a 50 foot radius. D9fred95
It's been like this from Day 1 back in 2013. You can have the best hiding spot ever conceived and the LSPD will "magically" know that you're hiding behind this dumpster down this alleyway on this street seventeen blocks away from where you committed your crime. It's pretty obvious the police is somewhat programmed to know your location and "pretend" to not know where you are, probably to add some sort of stupid challenge to it. Or at least it's programed to seem that way. They don't always just come right for you like in V, they can get really close to you but then go away again just because they didn't happen to come around the right corner or whatever. I was I was in burger shot and they kept and kept searching THAT specific restaurant and bathrooms despite there being no actual proof I could have went anywhere near area in the first place but I suppose it's better than gta v lol
