What if I told you R* are dropping the number pretext?

Feel like the numerals are an integral part of the marketing. Think about that V on GTA5. There’s literally a guy with that tatted on his throat. I doubt they’ll drop that

True, that's been a trend this past decade or more. I think in situations like these though where traditionally the franchise has been numbered then they suddenly drop the numbering in favor of something evoking the first one they're usually trying to convey some sort of fresh start. Usually, it's a soft reboot, or a "requel" but there's generally some sort of reset involved. Halloween, Fast and Furious, Scream come to mind.

Probably not as necessary for a franchise like GTA where it's essentially an anthology series, though.

Reboot Sequels is an annoying concept

It's as if they're saying "oh remember this franchise?!? Everyone forgot so let's roll it back out with the old characters and original title although it is a sequel not a remake/reboot!"

Hypothetically, what if R* decided to remaster all of the previous cities (except existing new universe ones) and just rebooted the series calling it Grand Theft Auto and expanding over time with new areas though? So it'd be something like current-era LS, current-era remastered LC, VC, SF, LV, and maybe some extras. I think that could justify some sort of reboot title if they wanted to make the game, both Story Mode and Online, permanently updatable.

Obviously this would probably be a gigantic undertaking even for a company like R* and I'm not expecting any of that, I think it's gonna be GTA VI and it's gonna be Vice City and surrounding areas, at best we get an LS and LC remaster down the line as they already exist but... :p

Yeah, this is kind of what I was thinking. They'd start with Vice City (or somewhere else that hasn't been done in the HD universe) and add a new city/story every few years. It would be awesome but incredibly unlikely. The consumer base has already told them that they don't need to work nearly that hard to make the game last a decade.

I think we'll get Vice City, surrounding areas, and maybe some generic island six or so years down the road.

As crazy as it might sound because of the sheer size of GTA V and the franchise as a whole, I do honestly think expansions like that could grow it even more. What you say is true and you could argue they could just keep it as is with VC and add a random island a few years down the line, but a proper expanded Grand Theft Auto title over time, especially with that "reboot" idea, would probably do extraordinarily well too I reckon.

As interesting as that sounds, having to constantly update the game engine and making it look different in terms of graphical fidelity after every major update will become jarring and a monumental PITA.

Not unheard of though, but that's where the final part of my original post comes in, about it 1. being probably too much of an undertaking even for R* if they did intend to put all of those things in the game with their typical level of detail; and 2. it could end up in tech debt which is no bueno either with these kinds of constantly updated games.

I figure that all sort of depends on how well optimized the engine is from the start, though. I can't imagine there being a need to do heavy upgrades to it with every major update  either way. Not even sure they'd need to do heavy upgrades between console generations. They didn't really with GTA V.

Graphically, I mean, I think no matter what happens GTA VI is going to be even better looking than RDR2 and RDR2 can probably hold up just fine for two more generations with minimal upgrading. I have a feeling that whatever GTA VI does graphically is going to hold up a long time whether they update or not.

Obviously, the game won't be able to last forever. It'll need an overhaul/reboot at some point but I don't think a game that lasts 4-5 console generations is out of the question.

I think that would occur only if R* decided to make a series reboot (read: another universe).

But considering how focused R* on GTA O right now - this wouldn't happen. GTA O is part of HD universe, and R* definitely wouldn't miss opportunity to add a next GTA map into Online.

Yeah, but the next game will likely have a whole new version of Online. I can't imagine they're going to transfer character progress over to whatever comes next so there's no good reason they can't just reboot the whole thing.

One doesn't simply reboot the GTA franchise because it's always being constantly rebooted.

Going from the 3D universe to the HD universe is literally a reboot of the franchise.

Oh didn't see you put another universe. Disregard my comment
