What is the point of the “call” when hunting, and how do you actually make it work properly? It seems to only give a disadvantag

I’ve played through the game before many times, but I’m replaying it now, and doing the early hunting mission with Charles. After killing the first deer, the game informs you of the “call” ability while aiming at animals. So, I’m trying to figure out what advantage it actually gives.

When I aim at the second deer and call, the deer moves it’s head up and then immediately starts running away, faster than you are able to aim at it’s head.

So, if you aim at it’s head first, and then call, it will move out of your lined up shot, and then start immediately running away.

If you call before aiming, it will stick its head up, but then when you aim, you lock onto its body first, which will not give a clean kill, and you don’t have enough time to fine tune the shot to its head or neck before it starts running.

If you wait until it’s head is down, and line up a shot to where it’s head would be when it sticks it back up, and then you call, it’s 50/50 chance that it’s head will poke back up to exact spot where your reticle is, and then it immediately bolts away.

So it’s not like I’m struggling to get a clean kill. I can do that very easily just by aiming for its head and shooting, without calling. But I’m trying to figure out how the call is meant to be used, because it seems to only make it harder, without providing any kind of advantage. It’s far easier to just aim and shoot without calling, so what exactly is the point of calling?

They pop their head up and stare at you for a few seconds, long enough for you to take their head off.

Perfect pelt every time.

Only time I call animals is if they're grazing in tall/thick brush or behind a bush. Works in real life. Shot plenty of deer, squirrels, rabbits, etc, like that. Even the slightest noise and their head will shoot right up. Can never tell how long they'll be like that before they bounce.

If you're just within the "call" range (right after it goes from grayed out to white and usable), you can call the animal over and over without it running away. If you're mad close, they'll split. All about distance.

You make animals who are grazing or are bedded to raise their heads and/or turn towards you. Gives you a better shot. Make sure to shoot quick or the animal gets spooked.
