My buddy was looking into getting the new Series X version of GTAV but he said that there is no cross play between Series X players and XBox One players. Since my friend is the only person in our small group of gaming friends who has a Series X (as I refuse to pay extortion level prices to these online scalpers), it would do no good for him to buy this version of the game. I imagine there is some technical reason as to why Series X and Xbox One players can't play together in this new version.

Online version yeah, that didn't change between PS3 and PS4 either IIRC. The actual game build is different.

I doubt that it's quite that simple. First of all, all the existing content including past DLCs has been folded into the base game, I'm assuming. With the new version you are loading up literally a different game now, even though 99% of it looks and acts the same. And second, any content in one version that isn't in the other would automatically make them incompatible. Can't drive up to your XBox One friend in a car that isn't in their game, and have it show up on screen as a question mark or something.

Continued support of new console generations, just like they did once before, necessarily means leaving the old gens behind.

It's not cross play.
And if I had to guess (based on 360 to XB1), the Series are going to get updates the previous consoles couldn't handle.

On a side note, I got my Series X by using stockinformer.com. It's free service that notifies you either through email or Discord when something is in stock. It allowed me to swoop one from Target without having to deal with a scalper.

I highly doubt they spent two years on this just to update shadows.... if there isn't more to come that takes advantage of these changes, then what was the point? $20 a person? Just a cash grab?

I mean they could have spent that time with RDO if this is all there is to it.

I'm not going to defend Rockstar (too much), but I don't (didn't) have a problem paying the $10 equivalent for GTA online standalone (you don't have to buy GTA V story mode btw).

This could be seen as a money grab just so we can continue playing on next-gen consoles, but I'm pretty happy with the affordable price. I got my character transferred to next gen and can now look forward to continued support for my favorite game, plus updates in the summer and at Christmas. I don't hear anyone complaining about the fact that we get free updates.

What is more questionable are shark cards. There's even an option to buy shark cards in the Online section of the pause menu, and the cost of upgrading HSW cars is very expensive for new, casual and returning players, but that's not my problem as a long-term GTA player.

There was always an option to buy shark cards in the pause menu.
Additionally, there has always been an option to purchase shark cards while you are there at the mechanics. Been like that since the 360.
I remember because that was used in one of the earliest dupe glitches (sell your car, go to buy a shark card, back out, and you had the money and a duplicate of your car parked on the street). I made $150K of selling a Merryweather Jeeps and said "F this, this sucks".

I'm.not talking about cross platform though. I'm talking about someone migrating their character to series s/x but still using the same character on the old system to play with friends who haven't upgraded. There's only one reason R☆ didn't do that this time and it's greed. They want to try to force everyone to buy a new console and buy the game a 3rd time.

You shouldn't support companies that go against your ethics. And purchasing their games, playing their games, and creating content (such as forum posts) about that game all help support that company.
Be true to your ethics.

Well I haven't bought the next gen version yet because I can't figure out how to run it on xbox one. I really only want the Arbiter GT. I don't really care about the 4k since I only have a 1080p TV.

You don't have to buy a new console immediately if you don't want to, but you will have to at some point, either for future GTA online updates or for GTA VI, so accept it. In the meantime, you can carrying on playing on mid-gen and upgrade when you're ready (Rockstar will give you a cut-off point in the future, but not now).

And you are NOT buying GTA again, but paying $10 (or $20 inc. story mode if you really want it). That's a sixth of the price of a new game.

You won't be able to run it on the XB1, it's a Series exclusive.
Now I have the same resolution TV, but I'm telling you, 60 frames with Ray Tracing is a game changer.
The game is so butter smooth on Performance RT. It's the same game, but feels so different. Driving, character movement, shooting, all feel so much better.
And I know you see it as greed, but increased framerates gives you a massive advantage over other players in GTA (or other games for that matter). For instance, vehicle speed is directly effected by framerate, higher framerates, higher top speeds.
And because it's a hit scan shooter, players with higher frame rates are going to have their hits register sooner than those with lower.
Plus, how would previous gen players be shown content that they don't have access to? Like the new cars? What happens when you roll up in a Series X car, how would that be displayed to an XB1 if they can't even download the car?

It's a lot more complicated than greed.

Any true GTA fan will upgrade at some point, buddy. I get the feeling we're going to be seeing many posts over the next few months along these lines. It was the same back on old-gen to mid-gen. Just accept that you WILL have to upgrade eventually.

Gatekeeping is pretty grody habit. You can be a "tRuE fAn" and not like the current game, or the current direction. Some people don't like online, does that make them not a "tRuE fAn" because they are not upgrading? Nope.

There is no need to pull pants down in public and disagree with what other people say just for the sake of it, by extracting snippets that you don't agree with.

I am trying to advise @blk95tathat he will have to upgrade eventually and that staying on mid-gen is ultimately doomed.

Honestly the resolution isnt even a selling point imo. As someone who has 3 screens 1080, 1440, 2160 (4k) fidelity is not always worth it at the expense of framerate. Playing GTA on a console at or around 60 fps is way better than anything previously experienced from this game on console. I do think they overhyped this re release and it has some bugs (shadows and shading are borked) but for the current price it's solid and a good future proof invesent for when support drops for xb1/ps4. Its the same rumblings as 360 gen to xb1 gen "why cant they put these simple cars on x platform" its to give an incentive to adopt a new system and ultimately start bringing out new content exclusive to the generation the game will continue to support.

If I see bad behavior, I'll call out bad behavior, just as I expect to be called out for mine. Gatekeeping is bad behavior.

"I am trying to advise @blk95tathat he will have to upgrade eventually and that staying on mid-gen is ultimately doomed."

And if he doesn't upgrade he isn't a "tRuE fAn", right?
That's the part I'm calling out.
You are right that if he wants to experience the new GTA Online updates, more than likely he'll have to get the new version. But getting it or not does not make him anymore or less of a "tRuE fAn".

This a thousand times. 60 frames really does make the game feel "new" in a way. So buttery smooth.

I said "Any true fan", referring to ALL of us.

If we are "true" fans (forgive that word) of GTA and wish to carry on playing into the future, we will have to upgrade at some point, whether we like it or not. That doesn't mean that I am in agreement of Rockstar twisting the knife at this point or that the update is as good as it could be (it isn't), but I am pragmatic enough to know that we will be left behind over the next year if we don't make the switch.

You do have a valid point that you can be a massive GTA online fan and not have the conditions to move to next-gen yet. Rockstar are forcing a lot or people's hands, who are not happy about it; afraid of being left behind and not having the latest toys.  This is understandable. I also get the dilemma people are split between, deciding whether or not to get a new console just to play GTA online. Is it worth it just for a few cars and some improved graphics? Probably not, although $10 for the software seems fair. But is this Rockstar's fault? They seem to be advancing their plans to move GTA to next-gen consoles, which was already delayed from last year, partly to earn some extra cash, but also because GTA online is creaking at the seams on mid-gen, just like it was on old-gen after the original heists.

There is no need to get defensive about whether or not you are a "true" GTA fan. Of course you are, we all are. Some people will have new hardware and a new copy of GTA online who have never played a day in their life, which is not fair when real fans are stuck behind on mid-gen, knowing they are cut off from many of their friends and that updates will become more sporadic.

This upgrade situation is going to get worse and worse over the coming months, with lots of people feeling forced into upgrading perfectly good existing hardware to keep up to date. And if I come across as someone that is happily smug because I have new kit, apologies for that! But through experience, I know how it feels to get left behind. For me, GTA online is my No. 1 game, and because I work for a living I can afford to upgrade. I will not apologize for working for my next GTA fix.

Rockstar wants to add better updates to the game to surpress complaining (which will never end even when GTA 6 comes out) so better hardware is needed. As far as we know this game could segway into GTA 6. A lot of things underneath the game have certainly changed. I've played the game a lot since the new version came out. I've only been in full lobbies so your assessment of people not buying into it is false considering how cheap it is.

I wonder why there's all this talk of cross play going on? I don't think that was ever a realistic expectation given that the newer consoles have content that the old consoles don't, so that would be kinda janky - not to mention future DLC might have extra stuff on the newer platforms due to their extra power vs. the older platforms. Rockstar have always done upgrade incentives as well, the same thing happened from PS3 era to PS4 era, and even PC had content of its own.

Here's the thing, Cross-Play was off the table for me before this was released, because as you said I was expecting the games to be running two different builds between lastgen/PC and newgen, but that was also on the premise that we'd still be able to get back and play on previous consoles, but since they went full stupid with that one and deleted our stuff, they should have at least let us play with previous consoles with the compromise being being locked to the Fidelity Mode, I don't care about them locking content to our consoles, I care about how me and my friends can't play together anymore.

Aye, they shouldn't have deleted the old characters in the first place, I do agree that was an exaggerated decision because some people only wanted to try the new version out for a bit and keep playing the previous one with their friends and crews, or just play both at once for a while. I don't see much of a reason to not allow the characters to persist on both platforms tbh.

When a transfer fails I wonder if your data is wiped still on old gen.

Say you go to transfer accept that your data will be deleted and then get transfer blocked for illegitimacy

Do they wipe last gen data before this point. If so its pretty ingenious but also scummy way to detect and reset cheaters.

Now those checks are pretty spotty with plenty of modded and glitched accounts making it fine but I wonder about it and if my scenario is true that would definitely explain the reason imo

I fired up the game and migrated my character over. Played as normal. Graphics look better and I welcome the 60FPS. Those dark and desolate garages look better with some light in them now.  Deleted the PS4 version since it is now useless. My active friends/crew mates will swap over in due time.
