Please try and keep any general discussion/praise/criticism/etc. that's not directly to do with analysing the game's visuals in the main megathread, thanks!

This topic is not to discuss graphics mods or how much you like or hate them or their creators, please keep it on-topic with discussion about the GTA V stock versions.

Doesn't make sense to only use FSR for fidelity mode. It's free performance every mode could take advantage of.

For real. If Fidelity Mode used FSR, then perhaps RTGI could have been somehow implemented to utilize more of next-gen capabilities.

Digital Foundry have updated their article to include Xbox Series S testings, and well, they deem it not worth an upgrade as NO MODE has Ray Tracing at all, Performance is only 1080p but also has more frame dips compared to other versions.

Quote

In summary, while the 60fps option is still delivering a sizeable improvement over the Xbox One S version, and while many of the missions still play out just fine at 60fps, the point is that when we hit frame-rate issues on Series X, they seem to be amplified significantly on the lower end Xbox machine. Ultimately, while Series S delivers an 'OK' experience overall, the compromises to the experience and the reduced performance level make this version difficult to justify, especially when you're paying the same price as a Series X owner.

Yeah they also mention in the video other games are held back pretty massively by the Series S in other aspects, it's... a strange console tbh lol. It's like Sony releasing a PS5 Lite.

It's curious though, the 1080p mode SHOULD be more stable, older GPU's on PC handled it better, it feels like a lack of optimizing for this console. At over 4.6Tflops it should be able to handle 1080p with settings on Very High and 16xAF with ease, it's quite weird.

Nice to see DF call it out though, for Series S this shouldn't be a paid upgrade.

I’m legit fine with the PS3 version, still looks great and there’s an artistic charm to its rough around the edges look imo.

Edit: Off-topic rant, but this website is just pure sh*t, at least on mobile. Aside from being completely unoptimised, why doesn’t it just embed the image? Why can’t I just upload from my camera roll like every other forum?

My buddy really loved playing on the PS3. He thought it really looked great. That was on 2013-2014 when GTA V just came out. IDK if it's just me, but GTA Online on PS4 looks like GTA V on PS3. GTA V SP just seems to have more Anti-aliasing, fog, and better reflections. I swear GTA Online has reduced graphical fidelity on all versions.

The developers behind this website should start coding for mobile ergonomics. I rarely open gtaforums on my phone due to the outdated UI. Brings me back to the pre-release days when a lot of us went to gtaforums every second or two on our phones just to check for updates.

Nobody have checked out the easter eggs to see if they changed? Fort Zancudo UFO, the lights on the bunker, that kind of stuff. If this is in the wrong topic, please let me know.

Also I don't expect them to have changed or that the Chilliad Mural is now 'working' or whatever but you never know.

I played GTA V on PS3 when it first came out and it looked impressive. Of course the game is going to look dated nowadays since V is almost 10 years old and the PS3 is a console that was originally released in 2006. People often forget that...

I know this is unrelated-ish but Grand Theft Auto V for PC is now 7 years old (April 14, 2015).

Remember, the game was originally to be released in 2013, they took some time, polished it, released it for then NG in November 2014 with PC for January. Then March. Then April.

Did we get "E&E" improvements? Nope. Sad stuff =l
Always on the short end of the stick when it comes to this game.

This is really an interesting thing. The improvement is really big but the really old lighting solution used in GTA V is still making people feel like

This also shows, that even Rockstar despite their best efforts is not able to "fake" everything.

Did the update clean up the graphics slightly? Looks less blurry on Series S and they put in those missing shadows Digital Foundry talked about. Also why are the jobs not switching around on current gen in the auto shop? Could've sworn they changed around on last gen.

Looks like the latest patch fixed the missing shadows on Series S? Can anyone confirm?

Ah nice to see we are still using stupid graphics videos to make this look bad.

Until you can make the game with those graphics run on my 500 dollars console and at a playable FPS, videos like that will continue to be silly and stupid.

Even most $1000 PC will struggle to do those improvements.

That mod doesn’t look good or realistic at all. And the comparison is terrible, as they didn’t even match the weather and conditions. The vanilla game looks significantly more washed out than GTA 5 truly is, almost like it was deliberate.

Oh I am not even going to begin talking about my opinion of the graphical mod itself, I am just saying unless I can get access to that on my PS5, putting it here to somehow undermine this new release comes across as silly and stupid.

I will, however, point out the fact that the video contains some stupid cringy comments like "the billion dollar company vs modder" as if modders aren't working with what said billion dollar company has already made.

Crap like this makes me dislike modders sometimes, I like mods, I used them many many times, I hated what Rockstar has done to harmless modders and mods recently (and even waved the boycott Take Two flag back with the openiv shenanigans too), I still think they are being dumb about the way they are treating passionate fans, but this crap attitude of "hey modders are better than the makers of the game" is silly and stupid.

For real. For once, it made GTA V look more like those tech demo games.

I agree with you that the graphics don't look realistic, just arguably better than GTA V's current flat presentation. What I liked about GTA V was that even though the lighting is very poorly done, the atmosphere/weather effects were amazing enough to represent real life without too much glitz and glam. There are still matte surfaces when it rains, the orange-y sunlight just so reflects how it should be in warmer places, the cars aren't very reflective to the point they either look like glass or those shiny plastics on toys. Trees are okay, even though they look very outdated as is.

Just like most graphical enhancements, wet concrete look more like plastic. In real life, there are rough patches on every concrete surface and rough concrete isn't as reflective as the smooth ones. These mods just unrealistically made every concrete too shiny, this is one of those scenarios where specular highlights would have been enough. Hell, even wet soil doesn't reflect that much light.

The trees have too much light passing through its leaves, they look much worse. Also, the shadows looked too strong.

I used to get fascinated by real-life's "graphics" when I was a kid XD. So, I know that shadows look bad in real life, and they have to be such in games if they really want more realistic shadows.

The excessive light blooming also reminds me of those ENB mods I used to have in GTA: SA back in the days. Too much bloom on the ground, to imitate ray-tracing, perhaps? :D

Even if Rockstar was gonna add Ray-traced lighting, people are gonna be ungrateful when they find out that wet ground aren't as shiny as they wanted them to be, that lights bouncing off a surface doesn't have to always have excessive blooming.

Don't get me wrong, I wanted improved graphics as much as anyone else. I wished that for a PS3-era game engine, they could have at least implemented RTGI even just on the immediate area since RAGE uses cell-loading.

The fidelity of the mod is higher but the game has no atmosphere with the mod (or any mod).

The PS3 version of GTA 5 is the best looking and most atmospheric version that exists. It’s  incredibly more vibrant and richer than the PS4 version. It’s a shame the remaster came along and essentially killed it because people upgraded to the PS4 naturally and because of the higher res and frame rate, don’t realize how much of a downgrade it really is in terms of art style, atmosphere, lighting etc.

I don’t think it was a lazy remaster or anything (it has first person) but the game was butchered and stuffed with overly fake looking effects and lighting that I guess they thought would enhance the look of it, but just wind up making it look like a Pixar animation on PS4 and PC, in comparison to the PS3, which looks so, so much more natural and rich.

Before anyone replies telling me i’m crazy, just go back and play the PS3 version for an extended amount of time on a good monitor (important), you will be surprised at just how much cleaner the image is.

I thought I was the only one who noticed. Too bad, I sold my PS3 and its GTA V bundle.

I also noticed that the PS3 version had more of that orange-y hue during the late afternoons. The upgrade I disliked were the light passing through leaves and the lens flares, pretty much the most noticeable upgrades there were.

Although, for the PS5 version, they did add little volumetric dust storms in Sandy Shores. The PS4 version only had dust blowing off the roads, most noticeable with headlights on, whereas the ones in the PS5 version seem to go up in the air.

It's just like GTA SA all over again where the upgrades just makes the atmospherics worst in place of better textures.

EDIT: It seems like the general consensus is that realistic=shiny surfaces, strong shadows, no fog/smog, and lots of lens flare. Lens flares were a thing when the PS4 launched. XD
