Please try and keep any general discussion/praise/criticism/etc. that's not directly to do with analysing the game's visuals in the main megathread, thanks!

This topic is not to discuss graphics mods or how much you like or hate them or their creators, please keep it on-topic with discussion about the GTA V stock versions.

Damn, perf RT looks much better, I wonder at what cost.

Nice to see these ugly shadow stripes on the very right are fixed with RT.

Performance RT is upscaled 4k with RT @ 60fps target. Performance is 4k @ 60fps - so PRT definitely the one to go with imo

Not sure what stripes you're referring to lol

I think that is:

- Fidelity: 4K, 30fps target, "high" ray-tracing

- Performance: 1440p, 60fps target, no ray-tracing

- Performance RT: 1440p dynamic resolution, 60fps target, "low" ray-tracing

Xbox One vs Series X - Fidelity | Performance RT | Performance

Some reason the E&E version added cars to the neighbor's driveway, might be a 'density' thing.

I'll stick to just Performance RT, looks just as good as Fidelity but 60fps >

Another thing; the new smoke is weird. If you move, the smoke moves like it's locked to your camera position and it kind of looks 2D or something. Like, at first it looks like its coming from the windshield but when you move over to the other side of the car, it looks like it's coming from the driver side. Very strange lol

Here - https://i.imgur.com/2FMaefk.mp4

Seeing this image from Xbox One (also happens on PC), it seems that shadows of this next-gen version (both ray-tracing and "normal" shadow) fix these 2 issues with the shadows:

On the left, the "2 quality shadows" (something that I hate hahhahaha). The near shadow with better quality, and the far shadow with worse quality. Now there are no "edge-transition". Now it's a smooth transition of the shadow.

On the right, similar. Now on next-gen you can see a smooth shadow transition. Before, it was very "edged" or "jaggied".

I think these issues are the ones that @Spider-Vice mentioned before.

Rubbish around the world will cast proper shadows across the RT modes.

Interestingly enough, you can get this on PC. I forget what the option is called, I think it’s in visualsettings.dat, but I could be mistaken. @_CP_ accidentally had it enabled for VisualV once, causing performance to take a massive hit until I pointed it out. Now it’s an optional file. But it is disabled by default, and no graphics settings change it.

I guess that's what was happening in @sutalu's screenshots that I pointed out  above then, where Fidelity and Performance RT modes were adding detail to decals on the ground.

Speaking of hidden PC features that are now on the next gen version, does anyone know if the low priority props have been enabled on E&E?

I don't think the rubbish was designed to have shadows, because now it floats. The decals were always off the ground, but you just couldn't notice it before. https://imgsli.com/MTAwMTcy

Does it look like the first trailer now with all the trees?

I've notices this myself too. All moving vehicles have a weird delay and warping with RT.

I noticed it too :( I think that they still have to improve/fix the rendering of the RT.

Would probably be worth putting that down in the bug reports topic too tbh. It's as I said before, they've introduced new graphics code to the game clearly so there's probably gonna be some kinks they'll need to patch.

It's hard to say what's bugged if anything. Every day there's new findings, so we might not fully understand how they're implemented, and perhaps they're supposed to be this way.

Yeah, I was talking about the blocky shadows that appear at one point.

As for the delay, that is indeed because some games use lighter forms of ray tracing for performance reasons, hence Jason's posts here and in other topics about how demanding it still is. I believe what you're seeing is the ray tracing resolving slowly and generating the shadow (as RT is a real time algorithm) as you dip between under the bridge and into the sun. I admit I don't have much expertise about the inner workings of ray tracing so I have no clue if it's something they can improve or if tracing the rays faster (thus also generating the shadow faster) would impact performance too negatively.

That's what I thought after looking.

It's weird how it's only in performance mode, I'd understand it more if it was on the Xbox One version.

They have to fix a lot of stuff..

Actually if you think about it not really :p This is because Performance Mode is using the old-school shadow solution like PC and last gen. These stripes happen on PC even with Shadows on higher settings IIRC, but they're solved by the ray tracing that Fidelity mode and Performance RT offers. If I remember right, they've been there since forever with the old shadow solution even on PC so not sure if they'll fix that.

Reminds me of voxelization. If I remember right Control has a mixture of lighting methods to optimize its raytracing features and even make up for those who have it disabled. One of those features is using voxels to simulate a more accurate lighting representation. It's better than regular rasterization, more expensive but cheaper than RT. If Rockstar is mixing things up too there might be some bugs that they didn't catch. I'll see if I can find resources to back up what I mean.

From the new version's credits, it uses AMD FSR for upscaling, which is a really nice surprise as it's relatively recent tech from them. R* has made great use of AMD tech in RDR2 as well, it's all in its credits.

Proof here:

There is a very distinct smudge that FSR applies to the image, a bit of a paint like look. It will require you to open up this picture in full at 100% zoom.

Used on all performance modes.

This effect is probably rendered at 10 fps or accumulating rays through multiple frames, like metro rtx does.

Judging from this video, the PS5 not only turns in better performance in stress tests than Xbox Series Consoles (5:35)

but it also has higher shadow rendering distance than any other platform, including PC (16:00).

Edit: upon looking further, 16:00 does have a slight time-of-day difference between platforms, but there is no doubt that PS5 and Series X have a better shadow rendering distance than Series S and PC. There are shadows in that shot being rendered on PS5/SX that simply do not exist at all on SS/PC.

The shadow rendering distance seems identical on Series x and PS5. That comparison has the sun at a slightly different position so it might look slightly different.

I would recommend watching that very carefully first. :) Because they aren't totally sh*tting on the game, at points quite the opposite, like many thought they would.

They even fixed issues with character animation that still are on PC and observed that it can indeed look better than PC maxed out.

But they do note that this isn't quite as "next gen" as Rockstar lead on to believe and as all their advertising states "With the power of PLAYSTATION 5 and XBOX SERIES" and do not think this is a proper show of apparently two years worth of work.

That's still not totally sh*tting on the game though - they point out negatives but also positives. I meant that towards the people who thought DF would absolutely *destroy* the game in their review, but the verdict is pretty positive in the end, all things considered and even with the negatives they do point out. They also do a lot of comparisons vs. PC especially on the shadows department, so at least people can see what RT shadows actually do lol.

One thing that definitely should be improved is the LODs in the fidelity modes, that is for sure. Also wish they had looked at the Xbox Series X.

Given the addition of what seems to be TAA and some of that stuff, I really do hope these updates come for PC as the MSAA on PC can be kinda janky, on top of being heavy.
