There's people out there who are defending Smoke for his actions, but the truth is he's always been greedy and ready to sabotage his own comrades for money and/or power. He's the literal embodiment of "Man, they'll slang their own mamma", a quote from Sweet in the beginning of the game pointing out how addicted Grove members had become to crack and what they're ready to do in order to obtain more.
