Rhoda
Well, the obvious answer to me is playing the missions as they're unlocked. There's multiple instances where multiple branches are available at once, and this applies to all areas through-out the story. For instance, you get the call from Zero as soon as you buy his business but you're completely free to ignore his missions completely and carry on with the plot. The only mention of chronology I can remember is when CJ remarks he "just got into town last week" when quizzed by Toreno, and this is fairly early on in San Fierro. Given his casual answer and the number of missions you're expected to have completed at this point (combining a hefty dose of exploration for new/casual players) I'd say this is fairly reasonable. The clock and the rules of time in the 3D universe are played fairly fast and loose however - not only can you simply bugger off at any point and stand in the middle of a field for days on end, but many mission give little to no time frame, meaning you could theoretically spend many weeks in game just... sat there. For instance, during Reuniting The Families you're given an opportunity to roam the map free of any hindrance whatsoever by simply refusing to enter the motel. I take this time to collect oysters and find the unique stunt jumps, which takes close to a week in game if I take my time. I assume though that you're talking about a straightforward playthrough though, so ignore the digression. As said, I would assume the chronological order is simply whenever they're available to play, and assuming you play the newest missions in tandem with any existing ones, going back and forth. Some missions don't really make sense geographically if you attempt them one after another. This is especially obvious in Los Santos, where characters will seemingly warp instantly from one location to another. One moment Sweet is at home, and within seconds he's with his girlfriend across town. Given the travel time and the assumption you're supposed to rotate Sweet, Ryder and Big Smoke tasks, it's fair to assume you could work out a reasonable timeframe the story is intended to span.
