GTA5 online PS5 & Xbox Series X - Expanded & Enhanced (no previous gen players crossplay)

Hello,

I would like to make some people aware of something I wasn't. The new GTA5 online enhanced upgrade (which can be downloaded now) due to launch on the 15th of March. Has some slightly disappointing news.

 

My question to Rockstar was if/when I upgrade can I play with my friends who still play GTA5 online on a PS4?

Unfortunately it is not possible due to graphical upgrades and new features, players on PS5 and Xbox Series X cannot play with the previous gen players.

I just wanted to make people aware if they do play with friends or have a crew. You may find out your cannot play with them ever again, unless they own a PS5, or again Xbox Series X for Xbox users.

 

I do know you can move your character over to the next gen, but it's a one time deal and you cannot go back. So, I'd assume if you wanted to continue playing on the old generation consoles you would need to start another profile from scratch for the old gen version.

Your assumption is wrong. The transfer copies over your character, money and other assets. It's just a copy, your profile on the old console remains.

Ok, following on from what you have said, I thought I'd dig a little deeper and find out from the horse's mouth.

And it seems my original 'assumption' was very correct.

The transfer, when it arrives, will be a one time complete migration of your character from the previous platform, along with everything your character has. The migration implies that it will be a full transfer from the PS4 to the PS5.

I understand what your saying. But as Rockstar have already said, it's a migration not a copy. So as they stated above you won't be able to use your original character on old gen and new gen at the same time. So again you won't be able to use your character on the PS4 once it's been migrated for the new PS5 upgrade unfortunately. 

 

I do want to 'trust' what you two have said. But I had to at least ask the company directly, and the response is very different, as you can read from the above. 'Yes' your stuff is transferred over but to play with PS4 players I guess it's a new profile. 

 

I had to ask as I didn't want to loose contact with friends and crew members who only own a PS4 and are unable to upgrade.

I think we have to assume it will work the same way it did last time until proven otherwise. Your helpdesk contact didn't seem too sure ("implies").

I was just going to say, when I was reading that and got to "implies" I was like: uhh.. yeah I read it too and thought it "implies" that, I needed clarification for you.

 

I wouldn't worry too much about that, this transfer seems to be the same as the previous one (why would it not be?) You transfer your progress, splitting it into two, so your PS4 progess remains where you left it before the transfer and anything you do there after won't carry over, that's all.

 

Also, I find the "I am a Rockstar Games Expert" to be a little strange sounding.

There's an article on Support about SP save game transferring ("open the story tab") but nothing on migration yet.

 

I also have doubts that if I transfer across platforms, if it works like you think, I would actually lose my (theoretical) purchased shark cards funds entirely. I'm not sure that's pukka.

This is gonna bite R☆ in the ass. There are likely people who were on the fence about going to next gen but figured they would get it and migrate their character as long as they still had their profile on the xbox one/ps4 to play with friends who couldn't upgrade.

 

Now they will say "well if I can't play with my friends who can't afford a ps5/xbox s/x, I'm just gonna stay on the old version" 

 

I get why there is no cross play between generations, but to wipe the character from old gen is bullsh*t.

They think it'll entice poor people to keep up with their rich friends and buy a new console. Probably Sony's idea. 

 

Imagine being in a group of 4 or 5 players and 2 or 3 have a next gen console. It will force the other 2 to buy a console they can't afford to be able to keep playing with their friends....or it will make people decide to not upgrade at all since their group of friends all can't afford to.

Series X is still hard to come by as is PS5.

 

You can't just walk into Best Buy or Target or Walmart and grab a Series X off the shelf.

I guess we have within 6 months to play with old gen friends and crews. Before we wave goodbye or be forced to start again... Depending on what you want to do... 

 

I can only again 'assume' the old gen will over time become rinsed with modders / glitches, pretty much like the PS3, Xbox etc. As the support stops altogether from R*.

it really is amazing, isn't it? imagine saying yesterday that moving to new gen would delete your old gen progress. you'd be laughed at and rightfully so, because what kind of idiotic logic do you need to apply to even consider that?

needless to say, people who transferred on the first hour really should have thought this better. i would have counted on all kinds of errors, but this is simply amazing. you can't even make a joke of it when the whole thing already is
