How long are Xbox One and PS4 going to get DLC?

Someone on the facebook thread said R☆ is going to stop updating GTA Online on PS4 and Xbox one after the new version comes out. I highly doubt this as the install base of new consoles is minuscule due to the chip shortage. R☆ would be stupid to alienate a good portion of their GTA Online player base. A lot of us bought a new system for the game in 2014, but aren't likely to do that again.

I'm guessing they didn't say how long after the new version comes out that Rockstar will stop supporting older versions.  For all we know it may be days (highly unlikely given how long they'd supported GTA4 and the PS3/360 versions) or it may be years - but it's safe to say they'll not be supporting the current gen systems (as of the date of this post) in 20 years time.

Of course, it should be noted that generally the lifespan between generations of gaming systems tends to be around the 5-6 year mark - 2014 was 8 years ago.

My guess is the updates will continue until GTA VI. I don't see them discontinuing updates for xb1/ps4 while still offering updates on PC/xbox series s/x and ps5.  The e&e is literally just a cosmetic update. There is no reason they can't offer the same DLC on PS4/Xbox one.

I get that the ps3/360 were severely underpowered for GTA Online, but that's not the case with the ps4/xbox one.

Updates are going to continue on PS4/Xbox One for f*cking ages, they are the main money makers (PS4 in particular) for R*. Don't worry about it.

Hi, OP!

Like others have stated, Rockstar would be unwise to suddenly cut content for about three quarters of the world who don't have next-gen technology. You'll get the summer DLC in July/August and the Christmas DLC, without a doubt.

But it's a tick-ticking bomb and you will have to upgrade eventually. Through the release of E&E on March 15, Rockstar have set the countdown timer.

There are two things you will have to contend with if you don't upgrade:

  • Slower and slower performance in lobbies as Rockstar pile on new content. I find the performance of the Car Meet almost unbearable on XB1 and I hardly ever go there because of it. Not only that, you won't get access to the new cars and Haos special section. I've no idea how this is going to work, but whatever Rockstar give old-gen players in future updates, it's going to be pared down in comparison to next-gen. You'll be missing out on some content for sure.

  • Many people will be upgrading to E&E and you won't be able to play with them unless you upgrade too. This will hurt your ego when online, with people talking about it regularly, and hurt your ego on these forums with all the new threads and comments. It will grind your bones to the point that you'll have to upgrade eventually.

So, make a decision. Upgrade now, at Christmas or later, but you will have to upgrade eventually if you love GTA online. If GTA online doesn't mean that much to you, then let it pass and grab it when it comes around.

Actually most of my friends who I play with every weekend are day 1 players and bought systems for GTA Online the last time it was migrated over, but feel like R☆ is being greedy now. I don't think any of them are planning on upgrading.

I suppose if I must, I'll just put a new system on my already 5 digit credit card debt that is mostly gas, food, utilities and car insurance over the last few years since life is too expensive already. I'm likely gonna walk away from the debt eventually anyway.

You're going to have to upgrade at some point, so you might as well accept it if you want to carrying on playing GTA online. This juggernaut is not going to stop.

I have been very tempted to put GTA online to bed completely over the last year and still feel that way, but my particular problem is that I'm not enjoying video games and the gaming communities as much as I did before, and it's not a problem with GTA online itself. GTA online is still by far the most diverse and enjoyable game that I own and all other games have a shelf life, whereas GTA is still playable after eight years, which is quite incredible.

I know that if I want to carry on playing GTA online that I will have to upgrade eventually or lose out. And, yes, the majority of the people that I speak with and (occasionally) play with are all upgraded. Because GTA online is the only game that I really care about, of course I am going to upgrade (actually waiting for my Series S to arrive).

I don't know where you live or how's your second hand market when it comes to consoles, but i doubt that you can even get last gen consoles for under $100. I'm not posting this to look down on you, just saying how it is as i'm living in ''developing country'' i sympathise with your situation no matter where you're from. The cheapest option for you to go with next gen is xbox s and if hadn't owned pc for decades and i can't get used to playing without mouse and keyboard, i would go with that option now.

A source, who has been very reliable in regards to GTA Online, has informed me long ago that Rockstar was considering dropping support for last-gen consoles upon E&E launch. I'm not sure if this plan is still being considered by now or if Rockstar made some changes since then. Even so, considering it was on the table, I think we would see them dropping support sooner than usually expected.

I personally doubt that very much, I think they will want to transition people over time as consoles also become more available. The ratio of players with PS5's and Xbox Series S|X's vs. players with PS4's and Xbox Ones probably isn't high enough yet.

What I can see happening is that in the next few updates, V next-gen (and PC?) gets extra exclusive content as incentives. I do think there's a possibility support won't last as long as last-last gen though.

I don't think they'll drop support this year, shark cards are their main source of income(Hence why the new versions are cheap/free) and they know that there will be significant fewer users on XBX/PS5 due to the shortage. You'll at least get the Winter update I'm sure

I could see them supporting it for the rest of this year, and maybe into the summer of 2023. By November we'll be two years into the new generation, if they keep supporting old-gen with the exact same content then there'll be no incentive to move onto the new version. But, there is also VI to think about and how that release will impact or change what GTAO will become.

I'd not be surprised if they repeat what they did with the last generation. About a year (I think it was), and then R* will want to move over. I reckon you'll get the summer content, Christmas next, then maybe next summer will be the last.

But it's only a matter of time as these consoles are in their second year now and more and more developers are gonna want to concentrate on using the better capabilities of these newer machines and as with time, the older gen support could be seen as holding them back like the last gen before it.

So will there be cloud gaming so those of us on xbox one and PS4 can just play the new version on cloud servers if we can't afford the new console?

Na, can't imagine so. It's gonna be just the same as the last re-release, you'll have to upgrade or you can't play the new stuff.

I think two more years. The winter 2023 update being the last one as hopefully the next GTA is out by then or a couple of months later. GTAO will probably be nuts by that point (as if it isn't already) so having it maintained on five platforms by that point probably wouldn't be feasible, especially if a new GTA title is out by then too.

GTAO will probably be updated with new locations/engine upgrades of some sort on the current gen consoles to coincide with a new GTA release. It just wouldn't be smart to continue updating last gen with content updates by that point or any sort of updates as GTA next obviously isn't coming to last gen consoles.

I'll be surprised if last gen continues getting updates past 2023 but I don't see support ending before the end of 2023, and by support I mean content updates not the actual servers (those are still a long ways from getting shut down, if they ever do).

if i had to guess, as soon as GTA VI is officially announced (an actual teaser this time) we'll move to one update per year and then just stop as soon as a date is given

I said this this in another thread somewhere but basically when it was released for PS4/One (2014) the previous gen versions were still updated for a further 2 years, with the final content update being added in 2016.

Many developers are holding back on their exclusive PS5/SX releases as simply put not enough people have them yet. So, I hardly think R* will cut off a huge chunk of their income in the next couple of years.

I'm sure a big announcement by R* will be made when they decide to stop updating PS4/One.

Last gen version of GTA: Online probably can't handle the GTA 6 map expansion... :sadkek:

I'll probably move over when I'll be able to regularly buy a PS5 without jumping through hoops, pre-ordering and all that jazz. And also when I'll have the money to spend on it, so it's probably going to take a while. New, exclusive next-gen updates could incentivize me in buying one, but I'm not sure, it all depends on the factors mentioned above, and how good the new updates are. A story DLC or GTA 6 could definitely make me run to the store though.

Even if I could find a PS5, yet come up with the money to fork over. If they shut down support for last gen it would be the final nail in the coffin for me. I am honestly sick of GTA V. I should have a PS5 or 6 or a PC by the time GTA 6 comes out. Unless they're going to release a new map for online I don't see myself missing out on much. I just like modding cars and chilling with friends. I can do that in GT7 (or IRL).

Will use the PS4 version to play with my crew and PS5 for everything else.

Of course these days everything else means the one time a month that I log on and spin the wheel. Just going to get the free version since it won’t see much use.

Not accurate.

November 2014 - PS4/XbOne release

December 2104 - Festive Surprise (counts as a DLC as it was the first one that actually added the seasonal content)

March 2015 - Heists

April 2015 - PC Release

June 2015 - Ill-Gotten Gains Pt 1

July 2015 -Ill-Gotten Gains Pt 2

9 months, 4 DLCs.

No more DLCs for PS3/Xb360 after that.

There were two non-content patches (November 2015 1.29 anti-cheat and June 2016 1.36 PS3 only for PlayStation Network architecture changes).

Now, IF PS4/XBOne get 4 DLCs like the OG versions did, then, yeah, we can probably expect that to take 2 years given the current DLC timeline (2 per annum) BUT if they only get 9 months worth of updates, then that could be 1 or 2 only. A mid-year one and they could just squeeze in for a final update at the end of 2022.

Oh right so they were updated after that then, so I was 'sort of' accurate.

I'm ngl, I did a quick Google search and was told 1.36 was updated in 2016.

However the case, what we're trying to say is get the next gen console ASAP. 🤣

Now that we know transferring our characters completely wipes out our previous character I think updates are going to stop much earlier than people think.

I legit stopped carrying anymore.

This E&E mess was enough for me to finally stop playing this game altogether and move into other games.

I will come back to it when another update comes around but until there, I'm just done.
