Character Transfer

Well good to know that both characters and assets transfer automatically but it really, really sucks that my ps4 characters get wiped after I do so. I guess I could keep my second psn account un-transferred to play with those who don't transfer by the time I finally convince myself to spring for a ps5. Or unless my ps4 craps out, whichever comes first.

Possible clarification as to why Rockstar wipes your old character when transferring to next gen.

 

1. It is possible to install and play GTA V standard AND GTA E&E on the same console. People might have two copies and get confused, thereby loading up the wrong version and wondering where their new cars are, for example.

This is a logical simplification to not confuse players with multiple versions of the same game. Yes, you can have two different-gen consoles, each running a relevant copy of GTA online, but having two different versions on the same console could be confusing.

 

2. From a Rockstar network administrator perspective, cleaning up the servers and databases on a regular basis is a must. It doesn't make technical sense for people who upgrade to next gen to have mostly unused legacy accounts on previous gen. If you upgrade to PS5 and rarely use your PS4 account anymore, it would be best from a Rockstar technical perspective to tidy up the servers and remove the legacy accounts. This makes things run smoother for people who remain on PS4 and haven't yet upgraded. No duplicates.

 

3. Rockstar achieve clear metrics on who has upgraded and who hasn't, and by deleting legacy accounts on PS4/Xbox One, they now have clear statistics about who is playing on each generation console. Rockstar needs to report these figures to T2 Interactive, who reports to its shareholders in turn. Now they have clear metrics about who is still on mid-gen consoles and who has moved to next-gen. This helps them decide how far and fast to push future updates. If the take up to next-gen is very quick, Rockstar will probably cut support to mid-gen sooner rather than later, and vice versa.

 

4. Obviously, Rockstar wants to make a bit of extra cash by selling a 'new' version of the game, but that's something beyond obvious at this point.

They can see who is playing on new-gen by looking at how many people are playing GTA on PS5, they don't need the new version at all.

 

However, by deleting the "mid gen" data without informing everyone properly first, they are falsely skewing the figures in favour of the new-gen edition. They might even get a few more forced converts as people who didn't want to/couldn't justify the cost of an upgrade find themselves stuck in the past without their friends.

 

p.s. Any company that had even the barest hint of a clue would have verified that the migration was successful before deleting the old data. This is Rockstar though.

Hey guys do you think the transfer feature will end one day? I've things I want to do before move. Suck that I've to rush. How much lasted from ps3 to ps4? 

Also yes the characters wiped out from last gen is frustrating for legit high ranks and honest players, OK you get everything back on next gen but still, you invested time on those PS4/Xbox One characters. R* should allow to copy at least...

I don't really feel that Rockstar are "skewing" figures because you've either upgraded to next gen or you haven't, but I agree with your sentiments.

 

Rockstar don't make it completely clear that when you purchase E&E you will be deleting your mid-gen account. You only find this out once you've bought and installed the new game and are on the character transfer screen. Some people may have bought a new console + game specifically to play on both new-gen and old-gen consoles. This is unethical behavior by Rockstar, I agree.

Allowing a ranked 8000 account to transfer is the last thing I need to hear about this raggedy ass game. I can't even put it into words anymore.

i have a PS4 and XB1 character linked to the same social club, and i’ve already transferred my XB1 character to series x and I’d like to transfer my PS4 one to PS5

does anyone know if you can transfer both or should i make a separate social club?

1- The two versions have many differences that can easily be used to differentiate between them, if one cannot tell by the graphics, the UI is different when you load the game, if that's not enough the icon is different, I don't see the confusing part, the UI experience loading up into the game is different.

 

2-This would have made sense if PS3/Xbox360 accounts weren't online for 8 years up until last December, they have just gotten rid of a big database that existed with the PS4 and XboxOne versions of the game, they didn't seem to mind at the time, why did they just start doing so now?

 

3- They can easily differentiate between who is on last gen and who is on current gen, it isn't something they need any extra step for, the system doesn't confuse them and they are both using different builds which can be tracked by the servers.

 

4-I mean, I guess... but what I have seen so far is people not wanting to upgrade, my friends included, I even told them not to because my crew would be even more separated by the fact. There are other ways to make people buy the new version, offering exclusive content is one of it.

Transfer on lastgen lasted for 3 years, 2014 to 2017.

I did say "Possible clarification" in my post, to give people more insight as to why Rockstar act the way they do in this transfer/deletion instance, not necessarily as a way of justifying their boorish tactics in this day and age. What I find weird is going on the RSC and finding zero stats for my Xbox One account, as though it never existed. It's more jarring than anything else though.

 

Rockstar are not the company they used to be; they are getting much more ruthless and I don't think we've seen the half of it. Think of all the people they have pissed off on PC right now. Yes, they have addressed the frame rate issue on next-gen consoles, so that cars travel the same speed at both 30 FPS AND 60 FPS, which is brilliant news, especially when you consider how many different graphics modes are available, but leaving PC players out in the dark is heartless.

 

The problem with Rockstar is that they don't communicate well, which is remarkable when you consider how much they now invest in marketing.

Migration for me happened last night, success and no problems, the whole thing took about 5 seconds! 

I've not tried it yet, but now that my PS4 character has been deleted, I'd like to try that new career builder and give it a go, but unsure if it's on PS4. I'll check when I get home.

The Career Builder is only on the NextGen Versions, therefore you can not try it out on PS4. Sorry mate.

Oh I will tell you all about being annoyed at them, they separated me from my group of friends and caused the crew to split, their decision to delete our characters was dumb and stupid.

But you now realize that one of the reasons they had to split the player base is because of the new graphics being untied from frame rates, right?

 

If you had a mid-gen console playing with a new-gen console, the new gen would thrash mid gen due to frame rates, 4k TVs and other technical aspects. So, you buy the new Hao cars on mid-gen and immediately get thrashed in races by people on newer consoles. Long term that would be worse!

 

This explains why Rockstar held back the Hao section of last summer's Tuners DLC until now, until they had the graphical details worked out.

 

My main concern, though, is that many people can't get a new console at unscalped prices. I had to buy an Xbox Series S, for example, but things will improve over the coming year.

 

What's really interesting is how Rockstar will handle the summer DLC? Mid-gen consoles will surely not be getting the new Hao cars because they are tied to next-gen hardware and the untying of the physics.

My problem isn't that they aren't letting us play with old-gen, I knew and expected that to not be w thing, my issue is them deleting my old character after the transfer, it's so dumb, I would have loved for all of my friends and crew to transfer over but they can't, the idea I had in mind was that I'd still be able to jump back on old gen and play them in the meantime.

Now, I have to create a new character for that to happen.

R* knows how hard it is to get consoles and with everything going on a lot of people can't afford it. So if you transfer and go back to old gen to play with friends you'll need to start again and most people won't want to grind on 2 different account so they probably think that people that can afford a new gen might buy a few sharkcards to get stuff for their new characters to be able to have fun with friends again.

 

If we could keep our character on 360/PS3 when transfering it should be possible now. The only reason to not allow it now and upset a lot of people would have to be money related. If R* can do something that will uset their players but make them money they will do it because they know that there isn't another game like GTA everyone can go to so people will have to keep playing. If GTA was a first person shooter I doubt they would treat their players like this because there are a lot of other shooter games people could go to instead.

Really quite pathetic that they left out Console to PC Transfer this time, (lol remember when Red Dead 2 got released on PC with no transferring at all or even acknowledged it?)

 

The only incentive I've had of hopping on today was it being free for me on PS5 which is still just not the experience I crave with transferring to PC with uncapped FPS, mouse aim, even faster loading times, and more

trust me you dont want to play pc lmao unless you like all your information out there and to have your lobbies force joined or you forcibly pulled into modders lobbies

How's things looking on the transfer front? I've seen quite a number of posts after the PC-fix from people saying they're having their transfers fail but their last-gen characters deleted anyway.

Yeah , I saw people on Reddit their transfer got failed and also their progress on old gen gets deleted but it safe to say that it’s not the right time to transfer now …. …so weird as I have already was chatting live with one of RockstarGames Expert and I asked him this question and he answer by saying this answer

if I migrate from PS4 to PS5 and migration failed ! Account progress will be deleted on PS4 ? Or I can go back to play on PS4 with same money , rank , vehicles , progress and everything ? 

 

Answer : 

 

-If the migration is not completed, you can continue to use the character on PS4 as normal

I'm not sure it is even their game! I thought support was still contracted out.
