Frame scaling mode, what's it for?

Is it used when you, say, want to have a 4k window but only render the game at 1080p, therefore 0.25 frame scaling?  I googled but didn't find a clear answer.  This would be useful for me switchng between a heavily modded install and vanilla, I'd only have to change this one setting instead of several.

The frame scaling percentage as shown in GTA V is not squared, so it isn't the total pixel count, but the amount of vertical pixels.

If you want pixel count, you need to square the frame scaling percentage

 

At 4k output resolution:

off renders in 4k

0.500 renders in 1080p (0.250x pixels)

0.667 renders in 1440p (0.444x pixels)

Scaling frames, duhh. It's in the name.
