A modern PC is stuttering with medium but not high+ settings in GTA V

Hey there friends, my PC is 3070ti + 10700k, and I'm trying to combat a weird problem.

When I use average settings (think the default ones), and ride around the city on a car, I occasionally get micro-freezes - that's with 170 FPS. However, if I drive up the settings to the point where average FPS drops to 130-140, those freezes/stutters suddenly go away. Does anyone have any thoughts/theories about this behavior?

Yes, it's a limitation in the GTA V engine. You must not allow the game to run over ~180fps, or it breaks down into stuttering.

If your PC is so fast as to reach 180fps in GTA V, you need to use a frame limiter on GTA V (I use RivaTuner)

 

Keep in mind, this is the same engine that was designed to run at 30fps on the PS3. They only upped the graphics and draw distance for the PS4/5 and PC.

Around that time, there were no PCs that could push 180fps so Rockstar never tested it at high fps.

 

Meanwhile, if you run higher graphics settings, your GPU will keep the fps safely below 180.
