Empire Building

One of the many new features in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories was Empire Building. For those who are unfamiliar with this feature and/or never played Vice City Stories, Empire Building is basically a mix between the properties from GTA Vice City and the gang territories from GTA San Andreas. In the game, Victor Vance can buy or take over different properties around the city. Some of these properties are owned by the other gangs, the Cholos, the Bikers and the Sharks.

Once you bought or took over a business, you could convert these buildings into specific businesses which consisted of Protection Racket, Loan Shark, Prostitution, Drugs, Smuggling and Robbery. Each buildings had three levels: Small-time, Medium Venture and High Roller; the higher the level was, the larger the profit was and you would even unlock a new outfit when you built a High Roller building for each type of businesses. Once you picked a business type and a level, you could go inside of them to start missions for each business; once you completed a certain amount of missions for each business, the income would increase. Each day at 4:00pm, you would receive your paycheck for the day, which could go up to $100,000 a day if you had enough high-income businesses.

But, to make all of this a bit more challenging and fair, the other gangs could sometimes come and attack your businesses to try and take over them. You would receive a message on your pager to warn you of the rival gang's attack and you could go protect your business against a few waves of enemies. If you decided to ignore it, the rival gangs would take over your business, which means you would have to take it over again. The more you attacked other gangs or took over their businesses, the more they would hate you, which meant that they would be more aggressive if they saw you on the streets and they would more frequently attack your businesses.

If Grand Theft Auto VI ends up taking place in Vice City again, would you like to have this gameplay feature make a comeback and what would you tweak/change? Grand Theft Auto: Online also has a similar gameplay loop with the properties and businesses that you can buy around the map such as the offices, warehouses, MC clubhouses, bunkers etc... I think Grand Theft Auto VI could definitely benefit from all of this and it would make the game really enjoyable and interesting. Let me know your thoughts.

My idea to expand empire mode :

expanded empire mode :

choose the size of the building (increase the capacity)

Small - medium - big

Choose the height (increase the capacity)

Low - medium - tall

Choose the value (increase the quality)

Low - medium - high

Choose the style

Bricks - classical - modern - chinesse

Choose the type :

drugs - prostitution - money printer - protection - gun factory - car robbery - heist - club - prestamist - cine studio - casino - betting place - hotel

(optional) build a house in the roof :

Choose his size (increase the things to do)

Small - medium - big

Choose the value (increase the things quality)

Low - medium - big

Choose the style :

bricks - classical - modern - chinesse

roof stuff :

Garden - pool - helipad

Garage (optional too) :

choose the size (increase the capacity) :

small - medium - big

Choose the value (increase the quality)

Low - medium - high

Choose the style :

bricks - classical - modern - chinesse

you can edit the building again in your office

warning the building can be demolished with bombs and destructive stuff

I really, really dislike the idea of having my business come under attack and I have to stop what I'm doing to go and save it. It's always super frustrating to be on one side of the map, about to do something you actually want to do, and the game pops up to tell you that you've got to drive back across the map to go do something else. They did this in V and it wasn't very long before I just started completely ignoring it.

I also don't really like the idea of passive income. Setting up a business and then just essentially collecting a check always makes money feel less meaningful. And money already feels pretty meaningless a few hours into a GTA as it is.

If they're going to bring back any sort of businesses I hope it ends up being more like GTA Online businesses where each business has it's own set of missions and you get to choose when you do or don't do those missions. Doing these missions costs money and the more you spend the more difficult the mission but you'd also stand to make more money.

I definitely agree, it was actually kind of broken in VCS because your businesses would get attacked by Bikers and Sharks almost constantly and it was getting really annoying after a while

This. Whether it be needing to prevent a business being over-run or being invited to a game of bowling, if you've just driven to one side of the map, it can get quite frustrating if too regularly you have to abandon the plan, especially if it's for a repetitive task. Occasionally, OK, it could be made to work, but not something you'd want to be happening with any regularity. Defending a business as a single set scripted mission? Sure, that could work as a mission idea some point in the story. I never felt GTA V's version of this was overly intrusive but it was definitely noticeable in SA and IV.

I think empire building would be a great thing to add in the next game! I really enjoyed the illegal businesses in the gta online biker update and, even though they weren’t as fleshed out as the empire building was in VCS, it was great fun and helped you feel like you were a true mob boss. Id love to see that return in some capacity without it being stuck to gta online!

i honestly dislike the businesses you can own in gta online.. it is so boring and.. man.. i dunno why. you're always the "owner" and it just legit feels like a chore. missions are repeating all the damn time.. there is no fun. it's all there to grind money in boring ass ways..

I think property assets and empire building should be a must if the next game is taking place in Vice City as it was first introduced in it's respective game and it would be kinda disappointing if it didn't appear in it's HD rendition. I personally loved it in VCS and an improved and refined version of it would be great.
