people in the future might see gta 5 storymode as a time capsule for the 2010s

playing gta 5 storymode definitely feels like your in 2013

which isnt suprising its suppose to be a satire of the culture of america at the time

same can be said about gta 6 when it releases

While I'd much rather have VI take place in the past, this would be the one silver lining of a modern setting IMO; it just comes with the territory of being a (then) contemporary time period. Both III and especially IV also feel like time capsules for their respective 2001 and 2008 settings.

Whenever I play GTA V I'm throwed back into 2013. It's a sweet feeling indeed.

GTA IV was exactly what came to mind when I read the thread title.

I agree. It always feels very nostalgic when playing story mode. Especially when you have been playing it for a long time.

The thing with GTA III and GTA IV that makes them slightly different and IMO better time capsules is they both occurred during significant world changing events.

GTA III was released literally a month after 9/11 and GTA IV released during the GFC and when the war on terrorism was still a thing. In hindsight they pretty much nail what 2001 and 2008 were like. 2013 doesn’t invoke those sort of feelings because nothing on the scale of 9/11, the GFC etc occurred at that time.

GTA V just feels like Watch Dogs, Sleeping Dogs etc and other similar games set in the early 2010s.  Despite being nearly a decade 2013 is a generic and unremarkable year in the grand scheme of things.

Thing is, the early 2010's were fairly chill and peaceful years, they were like the late 90's in the sense that no major world events, crisis, threats, situations, etc, were happening (Heck, even the late 90's had the whole Y2K thing).

Now we're in the early 2020's, and a single month cannot pass without feeling like the world is going to f*cking explode.

GTA V came out back when facebook, twitter, and youtube were on the rise as social media. Sure, they were around before, but the early 2010s got them as part of the human culture in general instead of merely being forms of journalizing and entertainment. Hell, that was the time when fact-checking and cancel culture wasn't a thing, so everybody thought their opinions mattered in Social Media. GTA V exagerrated it made the trend seem laughable.

My niece just played GTA V and she was wondering why their phones were smaller than the ones we have. I told her that smart phones weren't as large as they are now because they were older, less sophisticated models.

It honestly does feel like a time capsule for the early 2010s whenever I look back at it now, the cars being more bubbly looking then and not as sharp as they've been looking these last few years, the modern pop and rap music on the radio at the time, the lack of streaming services and how cable was pretty much king and social media not being as huge as it is nowadays. It just gives off an extremely 2013 vibe whenever I look back at the game now.

I agree with you on the music, especially Lady Gaga and Maroon 5. XD "I want it that way" by Backstreet Boys wasn't even trending by then, but GTA V somehow revived it. Same for "The Next Episode" and "Still Dre" since they basically became the go-to music for gangster/thug memes.

Also, rap music that came out in the early 2010s were noticeably different than rap music around 3 years ago. So, in a way, they captured it with Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, and A$AP Rocky's flow before they became the face of contemporary rap.

As for the lack of streaming services, Michael always comes into mind. Jimmy even mocked him for watching "Linear Entertainment". Jimmy was somehow on-point by then, Cable TV is too linear, and Netflix was a luxury. You either had to have consoles or you had to turn on the computer to watch. Smart TVs weren't as smart and they were more of a gimmick back then. Not to mention cloud services were still in early implementation, so streaming wasn't more convenient than downloading a torrent. Hence, everyone and their moms watched through analogue TV.

5 years later, streaming services were built-in on most smart phones. Smart TVs replaced became the bare minimum if you wanted to stream or watch youtube on a bigger screen. Even in my hellhole of a country analogue cable used some kind of hybrid streaming so people could choose which content they want to watch but my mom prefers classic analogue and Netflix. XD

As for the cars, back then everybody preferred SUVs and Sedans and compact SUVs were looked upon as toy cars.
