I do agree tbh.

I think there's many things R* could drop from the GTA series and it would harm the series but I genuinely think less satire and a shift to a more serious tone would not have any real impact on GTA and may actually improve the story telling. RDR2's proof that they can write some amazing characters and stories w/ a more serious tone, and I would not be against that type of story telling in GTA my self.

seeing a hidden dick somewhere is still funny to me

game can still be serious, but a joke here and there is nice

69 or penis jokes are merely scratching the surface of the clever satire stroke innuendo over the years, which go hand in hand.

But at the end of the day without the satire especially there is no GTA.

don't worry something tells me you will be able to filter satire/sexual innuendo on or off.

Rockstar encourages you to just steal the game from the stores because they know they’ll make their lost money back with shark cards

Mister Pink

I think the satire in GTA has been funny but got a bit OTT could be dialled back a bit. I was playing GTA IV last night and it's pretty spot-on at times. I mean, it's not always high-brow. But who cares when it's just things on the in-game TV and radio? If you are going to build a "living, breathing" world you are going to immitate real-world culture to fill the game with content. So Fox News becomes Weazel News and TNT/CNN becomes CNT. I don't see anyone really doing satire much better than how Rockstar's being doing it.

I don't think you can make GTA without it satirizing the inspiration it draws content from. What's the alternative? We have completely fictional TV networks and everything is completely fictional that aren't inspired by anything that exists in real life?  I think the charm of GTA is that you can turn on the TV and see an advert on the CNT network and instantly recognise that they're sh*tting on some trash network reality TV. Removing satire from GTA would be like removing satire from The Simpsons. It just wouldn't be the same.

However, with GTA IV's more serious tone, it made the humour almost stand out and seem more whacky. I hope the next GTA is a more serious GTA, in that case they can do satire a little more "British" and deadpan and not whacky and so obvious and American style. While Lazlow is funny, he's also American and the American style of satire/comedy/writing is always a lot less subtle than British style. Perhaps now that he's gone we'll see a massive change.

Hearing an advert for Degenatron in Vice City was very fitting and perfect back in 2002. The tone of Degenatron would be off, hearing it in GTA IV.  Also, this advert essentially predicts Shark Cards and Rockstar became what they mocked. I'm referring to the part where it says "it even takes quarters"  which is basically Shark Cards.

EDIT: Anyone else hoping this Bonnie & Clyde inspiration is false?

This is prob why I'm more into the humor from VC-VCS, like it's fine making fun of sh*t but it's fine because it's making fun of how things were, how we lived, etc. that far into the past. Yea in IV and V it's good like the day it comes out but then it gets really stale and cringy until like a decade later when you look at it and think "oh yea I remember back when XYZ was relevant".

IMO the best way to do it is just to have a game set in the past because you can get the best of both worlds without having the weird lull period where all the "jokes" you hear in the game just feel like you're listening to a comedian who won't stop telling old jokes and is well past their prime

I'm really glad I've branched out to way more games and game types after GTA V's launch, because I gotta tell you, the wait for that was nothing compared to this wait. Maybe it's better for other people because they got RDR 2 whereas I kinda skipped out on it because I guess I'm not as into the wild west setting as other people and I found that out when I got RDR 1, but it's still been an insanely long time since GTA V came out and we still don't have anything other than some preview material and maybe some leaks that may or may not be accurate.

I know they want to wait until the game's more complete to do marketing, but still. I mean, cyberpunk 2077 had time to get hyped, get released, turn out to be a big disappointment, and then patch itself into being decent and we still don't have the first trailer for GTA 6.

Yeah good points, I feel the same way. And great analogy about the commedian. I remember that about IV and V. If they make any current affairs jokes in modern-day-set GTA's the jokes date very fast.

I finally picked up GTA Definitive Edition and not going to lie, having a ball with Vice City. In fact, to GSGs and of course Rockstar's credit, I'm actually having one of the best playthrough's of Vice City I've ever had. It reminds how much in love I was with GTA. I do miss my period-set GTA's. I thought having one game set in 1986 and another in 1992, it might be standard for GTA to bounce around timelines. But, it looks like GTA VI will be another modern day GTA which doesn't have the same charm for me. Playing a 3rd modern-day set GTA in a row and over a real life about a 15 year period, isn't too appealing.

I wish Rockstar would use some of that GTAO cash, get the finger out and make a spin-off GTA, a bit like the Stories spin-off, that did period games. 1970's or 1990's GTA's.  They could be smaller in scale and scope.  Like a Vice City with 20 main missions, some Assasination missions, some racing, some collectibles, businesses etc. Basic online like GTA IV with some races. No Shark Cards. Realistic enconomy. Supported by 2 single player DLC's and 2 online DLC's. Graphics and physics will be the same as a mainline GTA but the mission count would be considerably reduced. Map size much smaller than a main GTA. They could also take more risks on some small cities like Baltimore or El Paso. What does it matter if it's a small city, anyway? The 3D era cities are the equivelant to medium or small sized towns if you made them in real life. So, modelling a GTA on a small city you could do an almost close 1:1 scale.

Im still quite floored they never made anything showing off Michael and Trevor’s pre-prologue days running around from town to town robbing places. Yeah it would feel like red dead 2 a bit too much (albeit  a century later) but still, I’d very much welcome that more than take a submarine from California to the Caribbean to rob someone and leave

  • 2 weeks later...
  • Another mono-city GTA.
  • Another modern-day set GTA. No period set GTA since classics Vice City and San Andreas 16 years ago. Shame, really. I'll suppose I'll look to Mafia series to scratch that itch.
  • Character-swtiching, again!

Character switching was an abysmal gimmick. It's a sure fire way to kill feeling invested in your character. You're never commited to one. It dilutes the experience. I just hope they don't force us to character switch in missions. Jumping from a poor desert guy then to a downtown rich guy gave me huge dissonance. I never felt connected in characrer progression because I'm micro-managing 3 guys.

OK, Jason and Lucia could be different, I'll try keep an open mind but I reckon that same dissonance will happen again. In fact, if the game lets me play only as Jason, i'll be happy to have an accomplice but I don't want to be forced to play as her because I'd rather invest in one character.

You're mostly right.

What I didn't like about multi-protags was the dumbed-down voice lines and character building.

Also, glad you've noticed Vice City looks very similar to Los Santos. I guess it has something to do with the wide roads (that booty is wide af, even to my standards).

Even if I don't care much for playing as a female, Lucia looks cool and I'm coming around the idea of the "Bonnie & Clyde" theme. I'm still just skeptical of having 2 different bank accounts, wardrobes, characters etc etc.

Modern Bonnie & Clyde story could have been set somewhere else, but now that they've used Vice City for 6,

it means that GTA 7 can't be 80's Vice City either...

I think with Jason and Lucia it could work. Here, unlike Franklin, Michael and Trevor we are only following two characters, and from what we know so far they are most likely in a relationship. This means that their relationship is likely more complex, they spend more time with each other than the 3 characters from GTA V ever did and they both live in the same conditions. It's honestly a good concept that could work, to have a GTA game where we have two characters living with each other and comitting crimes together, similarily to Claude and Catalina (at least before she betrays him).

At least Lucia looks very female compared to the GTA Online Female presets. It took me years finetuning my protag's face and the only hairstyles that work for her are the wavy bob, ponytail and that recent short hair.

Here's hoping that aside from clothing, they both get to share weapons they collected. With each protag able to make their respective loadout from a weapon locker. It'd be better for me if they share bank accounts. It was a pain trying to micro-manage 3 protags in GTA V.

They should also have fleshed-out voice lines on par with the GTA IV protags. By that, I mean there should be voice lines for at least every street. GTA V didn't have those when calling for a cab and 911.

I didn't like the way the three protags each had their own properties, as I said, I didn't like micro-managing 3 characters and switching between them just to access the other one's house.

You guys bet one of them would betray the other? They could get arrested down the line and it becomes a turning point for them to f*ck up the other. It's not gonna be optional and we're gonna end up with probably Lucia by the end.

Other than the female protagonist and -70 Ranchero, I haven't seen anything too exciting or remarkable in the leaks. Everone were expecting VC setting anyway, so I wish (also as a non-fan of VC) that the leaks had hinted some other Florida city too or/and the existence of vast rural areas. I know it's all early builds etc. (hopefully 😅), but the nightclub scene is like straight from GTA online, it looks so depressingly similar. I sure hope the final build really looks and feels like GTA 6, not just enhanced 2020 era GTA Online.

Physics, vehicles and as much as you can take from the graphics at this point, it all kinda looks to "belong" into HD era still? I don't know what, but "something" about it, even at this point of the production, should hint us that we have progressed away from the HD era that GTA 4 started in 2008 and it's been 10 years since the last GTA, right? I hear people talking about "placeholders" here and there, but there are new cars, that still look really "HD era" styled, are they really just placeholders for the "real" models?

Knowing RDR2, I'm sure it's going to be and look awesome on release, but despite the scale of the leaks, my mind is not blown yet.

The dialogue in the scene is the scariest part for me. It feels as if we never left Los Santos... I was mostly in team "Modern-day setting", but am now tremendously doubtful as to whether or not they can pull it off properly.

Agree. Was gutted to see that not only it looks just like GTA 5, it's also in present day... FFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!! Can't say thought that I'm HUGELY disappointed, cuz I wasn't expecting much to begin with. It's going to be just a GTA Online DLC. Boooooooooooooring!

Yeah she looks great. I even like Jason too. We'll have to see what their personalities are like. I really hope they don't bicker so much. GTA V had so much bickering between Trevor and Michael, I just couldn't replay it. It's like an episode of Eastenders on  meth/piko/Christina

Shared weapons sounds like a great idea. Also being able to swap weapons with one another on the job would be nice too.

Yeah the micro managing between 3 characters took me out of the game. I much prefer to gel with one character and feel invested in them. And kind of roleplay with the character. For example, playing GTA IV recently, I always play with a trash, beat up car for the first 3rd of the game. I live frugally and dress down. Not until I need to have meetings with people in downtown Algonquin do I start dressing up a little and looking more presentable. I'll drive a car that I think a hitman for hire like Niko might drive. It's small role-playing elements like this that Rockstar have enabled for us that allow me to really feel immersed in their games. There's a little freedom of choice, enough to make me feel like I'm contributing to (and having some influence to) the story in some sense.

As for betrayal at the end, yes. I very much think one of them will possibly die and you'll play on as whoever survives. It might be interesting if there isn't some binary decision at the end but a chain of events of decisions you make determines in the end who will die.
