Some mocap is done later in development because it's lower priority, perhaps peds and stuff like that, but I would assume a protagonist or main character would be casted a few years before release.

We might be 2-3 years away from release

Maybe Dan Houser was speaking the truth when he said he had no idea what to do with VI's story back in 2018

I wonder if they'll do some new mocap animations for the protag characters like we saw in GTA5 when driving. I wanna watch our protags jamming the f*ck out to some new tunes when commuting around the city. I'd also like to see them animate the protags shifting gears when driving a car. Nothing too complex, perhaps something similar to what we saw in games like Midnight Club: LA or Driver: San Francisco when you have the camera set to a first person perspective when driving? They don't need to animate the gearstick moving but it'd be just another one of those small details that I appreciate from Rockstar

Can't quite agree there as I love my 10+ hour playsessions exploring everything and doing the story etc :p

100% remember being extremely hyped for rdr2  and it was worth every single second . Would erase my memory for that game anytime

I'm pretty sure I skipped a few (or so) classes to play RDR2 for hours and hours on end :sadkek:

Nah he definitely had some hand with the writing no way he didn't but probably was burned out , thankfully Sam houser is still there .

RDR2 has an absolute crap ton of overall writers credited to it (incl. ped dialogue and misc.), stop worrying about Dan Houser "leaving", honestly.

The point was that maybe there was no proper story for VI yet in 2018

Didn't they say they always make the map first and then the story and missions come from that

RDR2 cast being together for so long is an exception

Oh yeah, that thank you Rockstar posted of the listed teams and contributions that worked on Red Dead along the way was f*cking huge.

There's a few things to take away from Dan's comment:

  • It doesn't mean it was his view when the interview was made, just that he thought about that - how would a GTA satire story work in a world that is already satirising itself. Doesn't mean he had nothing, he could have had this thought in 2016 but talked about it in the interview;
  • Even if he was struggling with the political side of the world he's writing, it doesn't mean he'd be struggling with everything else. Struggling to write satire in a Trump-governed US doesn't mean that he didn't already have stories for characters and rough drafts of what the story would be in general.

At least they still have Michael Unsworth and Rupert Humphries. I mean these two guys helped Dan write a bunch of games at Rockstar for the past decade now. I think we can be probably trust them in making a good story

Let's not forget these people and probably even more also contribute... All kinds of writing credits all over.

Do we know how was the writing process of RDR2? Or how exactly Dan's figure was involved into it?

For all we know Dan probably ate Chinese food, shouted at his employees all day, and then took all the credit.

None of us have any idea about how a video game writers room works.

This is a footage of a 2013 pre-alpha build for CP77. Dan Houser would have definitely experienced something similar aka the "vertical slice" of GTA6, which would have utilized GTAV or RDR2 as the infrastructure to show off a demo to get the feeling of the next game.

Actually, we already have former employees discussing the development of Bully 2 from the GameInformer article.

Quote

“We worked with a lot of GTA assets just so that we could get something prototyped quickly,” one developer says about the climbing. “We tried to work a lot of that in. It’s like, Well, when he’s hanging for this long, how long does he hang for before he lets go? Do we wanna do [a] foot-over-foot balancing act if you’re walking along a branch? Versus side stepping, side to side, if you were working along the branch but to the side? It was stuff like that, and trying to figure out what worked, or what looked the best as the player.”

Housing these new features was a vertical slice of Bully 2 that Rockstar New England had up and running. According to four developers at the studio and one person at Rockstar’s New York City headquarters, Bully 2 was playable. Developers could run around the world and interact with objects and non-player characters, and there were some missions – such as one involving go-karts, another with a beekeeper, a Kamp Krusty-style mission, and one that had Jimmy in his underwear, even featuring a crotch bulge.

“It was definitely going to be a little risqué,” a former developer says.

“There were a lot of ’80s-kids-on-bikes movies, like Goonies, that came up as reference. Porky’s was another commonly used movie for reference,” he says. “We [looked] at a lot of those kinds of things. It’s definitely in that style.”

As one developer on the project recalls, the team had mapped out all the terrain for the game’s world. Additionally, NPCs were walking around doing various day-to-day tasks. Buildings and houses within the game were also starting to become feature-complete, though he points out that they weren’t in a shippable form yet.

“The game was at least six to eight hours playable,” says Marc Anthony Rodriguez, a former game analyst for Rockstar’s New York City headquarters and one of the project leads on Bully: Scholarship Edition. “So, fully rendered, fully realized.”

“That sounds about right for the size of vertical slice that Rockstar projects were being built around [at] that time,” a second source says when asked about whether, during his time working on the project, the game was playable for six to eight hours.

Two developers Game Informer spoke to estimate that if development had continued, Bully 2 would still have needed two to three or more years before being ready to be shipped.

Dan Houser took an extended break six months after RDR2 released. If we are to assume GTA6 would have been in full development by then, Dan would've already went thru the "Get a feeling of the game" phase.

Then none of us can truly measure the damage of Dan Houser departure. People who say "stop caring about it because RDR2 had a thousand writers" are being over-simplistic in their logic. We'll only have a our answer when a new game is released, and it's natural to be worried until then.
