"Loyal" by Demarco (Blue Ark).

I know what Rockstar was aiming for back then (I mean, Lorde's "Royals" was really popular back in the early-to-mid 2010's, after all), yet they could've licensed the original song instead of licensing "Tennis Court" and Demarco's cover/remix/??? version.

"Rack City" by Tyga

That song was supposed to be on Radio Los Santos, and honestly that song is horrible

El Sondito gets much hate but nobody ever mentions that clapping and whistling song on Worldwide FM, I think it's called Clap Clap

My choice and I've said it before is f*cking Heartbeat by Don motherf*cking Johnson.  Just a really sh*tty song that's super catchy and gets stuck in your head. This song works for Michael De Santa and ONLY Michael De Santa

Would have costed more than the entire 80s catalogue on nsp. The song was really popular that year.

OT i think circle in the sand by belinda carlisle does not fit lsrr at all. I dont know why it wasnt on nsp like it was originally supposed to

All the rap and soul/trad pop songs on kult fm as well. They had an awesome post punk/early punk playlist and they had to ruin the atmosphere with all that crap. Didnt help that a number of those were relicensed from previous gtas

You would have thought they would've used Soft Cell's version of Tainted Love on KULT instead of the motown version from San Andreas, it would've been more in keeping with the vibe on that station

Everything that wasn't written for the game. Licensed music in GTA needs to die as it ironically ruins the very concept of being a parody.

I honestly find Gloria Jones' version to be pretty good.

It's awesome. It just didn't fit the aesthetic of the station.

Maybe they should've put the Marilyn Manson version of the song on Kult FM.

Ye but it's not west coast... The station is called West Coast Classics, not just Classics... an east coast Classics station wouldn't be playing Snoop Dogg and Ludacris, they'd be playing Nas and 50 Cent.

Licensed music has existed in GTA as far back as GTA 3 and is a huge part of the atmosphere of each game. More anecdotally, how many people do you hear talking about their favorite memories listening to "A Horse With No Name" driving through Bone County in SA or the entire essence of Vice City. People even talk about their memories of driving through Los Santos (GTA V) listening to M83, or Lady (Hear Me Tonight).

It doesn't ironically ruin the concept of parody at all, it is a purposeful choice in order to enhance the authenticity of the parodied game world Rockstar have created. And, like, did you even play any of the GTA games? The radios certainly are a parody in it of themselves. The DJs, the commercials, Weazel News.

Imagine his scenario: You're cruising down the road, taking in the world's atmosphere and a song comes on the radio which mentions a real place, brand, or car that doesn't exist in GTA lore. Suddenly your immersion is broken.

Now I ask, how does that help make the world feel authentic? It would be more authentic for Rockstar to have relatively unknown musicians write songs specifically for the game and its world lore rather than license whatever song they think fits. How can Lady Gaga be on the radio in a fictitious world when she's not even a person in said world? And this isn't directly a problem only with GTA but many other open-world games as well such as the Mafia and Saints Row series.

And of course I've played GTA. I've played them all excluding CTW and Advanced. I wouldn't be on a fan forum for it if I hadn't.

Entirely subjective and also a point you're blowing unreasonably out of proportion. Like 97% of licensed music does not mention real world places, brands, cars etc. Not very good reasoning for, as you say, "all licensed music should be removed" because it seems like your issue is with songs that contain lyrical content that breaks this little bubble you have put the GTA universe in. GTA does not exist in a bubble, FYI. There are plenty of in-universe references to real things, you know like Vice City is based in Florida, the whole series takes place in the USA and not some entirely fictional country. Yes, songs that mention IRL stuff are tacky but it's an entirely nit picky and silly point. If you don't like a song, change it.

I've already answered this

In case it wasn't clear, it's not licensed music in it of itself that helps create that authentic feeling but that, along with the numerous ridiculous commercials, radio DJs and in-game news reports.

\You should go back and play GTA2. In that particular game, the entire in-game radio was created by musicians that (at the time) DMA design hired. In fact, go and listen to the soundtrack on YouTube and tell me it doesn't sound like it's just packed with music that had been licensed. Moving forward, they opted to just use licensed music and the authenticity it creates is practically identical. So with this being said, why not just use licensed music? GTA isn't a showcase for aspiring unknown artists to make their big break (although arguably a lot of the lesser known licensed tracks in the GTA games get FAR more attention than they otherwise would), it's a triple A blockbuster PRODUCT. The tacky pop songs you hear on the radio fit perfectly in the shallow, fake and absurd world of GTA.

As a side note, if they used songs that were written for the game about the lore it would just sound incredibly tacky and probably harm the experience.

Umm, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but if she is named in the world (which she is by the Non-Stop Pop DJ) then Lady Gaga certainly does exist in the game world. It's not hard to reasonably believe that she would exist in that world especially since GTA is a mirror of our world, albeit drastically exaggerated. GTA is not a 100% entirely fictitious world.

Well I'm not talking about Mafia or Saints Row but if this conversation did pertain to open-world games as a whole then my same arguments would still apply. Tacky 50's/60's hits are going to sound far more authentic in Mafia then if a modern artist tried to mimic that genre of music with modern production elements. Saints Row is a different story and it depends if we're talking SR1&2 vs SR3 onward but I will say this, the hip-hop selection chosen for the first two Saints games were incredible and ironically featured heaps of underground tracks that helped give them a bit of spotlight.

It was a rhetorical question bud.

The Crew, a much smaller profile game, was released that year and had the original song Royals in the game so I don't think it would be that big of an issue.

I will attest, "New York Groove" always annoyed me when it came on in GTA IV, always felt like Niko'd be like what the hell is  a "new york"

Oddly the songs about California don't bother me that way in GTAV though, I wonder why

Photograph by Def Leppard should've been on GTA VI on a Vice City setting. It fits Los Santos but I think it would fit Vice City more.

All the 80s songs on Non Stop Pop. There should have been more songs like "Cooler Than Me", "Meet Me Halfway" or "Tennis Court" on it, or some dubstep/EDM tunes by artists like Nero or Deadmau5. Looking back now GTA V's Story mode doesn't feel as 'period' as IV does imo.

I like the 80s as much as the next guy, but I wish NSP had more late 2000s/early 2010s pop music. It was a pretty good era of pop imo, better than nowadays Tiktok music at least.

They should have added "Surfin' USSR" by Ray Steven's to rebel radio with the Cayo Prico heist.

Mister Pink

Britney Spears

Backstreet Boys

Kelly Rowland

Mis-Teeq

Fergie

All those kind of artist's tracks that were done to death on the radio and MTV when they came out. Driving around Hollywood listening to Fergie, Fame or Shame is boring as f*ck. It's kind of like some MTV The Hills simulator or something.
