TrickyMario7654
Hello, GTAFourms, I'm new around here. I recently brought the original V1.40 release of GTA Vice City for the PS2 from eBay and the game runs quite well, except that the framerate is quite choppy, especially whenever I'm driving and there's a lot of objects on screen. While it's still playable, I would like to know if there's a way I can get the framerate to run more smoothly. My Vice City Stories copy for the PS2 runs perfectly fine with minimal framerate problems, so I'm stumped as to why the original Vice City has framerate issues on my PS2. If any of you can help me solve this issue, I'd appreciate it. Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/979303-framerate-is-bad-on-ps2/ Share on other sites
_BlackShadow
Is your VC disc is clean? VC on PS2 had streaming issues. This maybe the cause. Are you using Phat PS2? Phat PS2's overheat than slims. I suggest you dumping your CD to a ISO-HDD and play your games there, if your PS2 is modded. I could get the disc cleaned and see if it runs better after that. Also, I am using a "fat" PS2 model, though it isn't modded. Thanks for the suggestions. _BlackShadow 1 Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/979303-framerate-is-bad-on-ps2/#findComment-1071767065 Share on other sites

Stahli
Maybe you can record a video and show us the judder. Maybe it's the normal judder that everyone else has with Vice City for PS2. Otherwise, I can only imagine that the DVD is scratched. My PS2 Vice City jerks when there is a lot of smoke. Hold on, I'll get around to doing this when I play it the next time. TrickyMario7654
Ok, I've recorded some footage of gameplay from my PS2 copy of Vice City. Does anyone here thinks that the framerate shown in the video is choppy? EDIT: I noticed that the problem mainly seems to occur at night, perhaps due to all the street lighting? Tycek
Imo, there is nothing out of ordinary. I've completed VC on PS2 many times and I would say it works as always, trying to keep around 30 FPS (but with drops to even 20). Here is video comparing framerates and You can see that PS2 version wasn't known for its good performance (not like people cared about it in 2002). I guess we've been spoiled by newer hardware being able to run at much better framerates than compared to what we had 20 years ago. I honestly thought there was something wrong with my game at first, as there's quite a lot of scratches on the disc, though the game still works. Thanks for showing me that comparison. Tycek
No problem, mate. If the game works well (debatable ), there is nothing wrong with the disk. If it is too dirty or too scratched to work, game will be showing big "Loading" in the middle of the screen, while it tries to load the data. Eventually You may start falling under the map as in this video: If You don't see anything like that, there is nothing to worry about. Have fun playing the one true version of Vice Edited January 7, 2022 by Tycek GrandTheftSomeone 1 Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/979303-framerate-is-bad-on-ps2/#findComment-1071770044 Share on other sites
