doslast
I'm currently playing Vice City with the following specs: Amd Athlon at 1.1ghz 256mb sdram GeForce 4 MX440 64mb ram Windows XP AGP Aperture set at 64mb According to other posters with their computers this game should run fine on my computer. I have defragmented, cleaned memory, rebooted, everything to try and get this to run faster...but all I get is around 15fps. Can anyone help me? Thanks. Vicetopia
AMD Athon 1.4 GHZ GeForce 4 Ti 4200 128 RAM DDR Windows 98 Running at 1024 x 768, Frame Limiter off, Draw distance max. Good 70+ frame rate. Amazingly smooth. A little advice: Try turning the frame limiter off!?
doslast
I have turned off the frame limiter. It seems that there are no problems indoors (30fps) but whenever I'm outdoors it's back to 15fps. I've tried at 640x480x16, 800x600x16, 1024x768x16, as well as the 32bit resolutions for those and it's still the same way. The fact that the framerate stays the same for each resolution is a bit odd to me.
Vicetopia
Go into your video options and make sure Vsync is off as well as FSAA (Full Screen Anti-Aliasing). Have you tried (dum dum dum...) reformatting? It may not be the answer you're looking for, but it would probably work.
homercles
Have you tried (dum dum dum...) reformatting? It may not be the answer you're looking for, but it would probably work. Ummm, i think you mean defragmenting. Reformatting means wiping your disc and starting over with an OS install. Which is WAY more work, but the end result would be the same. Defraggin is always a good idea as win98 and up optimizes programs for speed.
Vicetopia
He already tried defragmenting and it didn't work. Reformatting would totally wipe the system and he may have some corrupt files caused by a bad driver install or a game, etc.

keik
I also have a problem with low fps. I have a XP1900+, 512 MB DDR 333mhz, GeForce 4 TI4200 64mb. Im running detonator 40.72, latest via 4-in-1. I've tried everything, turning off frame limiter, all the different resolutions, everything. It seems it lags just as much on EVERY resolution. I also formatted and reinstalled XP the other day, but that didnt help. I don't have XP SP1 though, since my friend with almost the same system setup (without sp1) although he has a radeon 8500 can run the game without any problems at all. HELP! Yeah - that's weird alright - your computer is FUBAR somehow. I'm runnin VC on an 850/geforce 3 ti 200 64mb with absolutely NO problems at all - frame limiter off, smooth as silk, blah blah blah. I'm guessing that you might have a proprietary system? Like dell or something as you have a Geforce 4 Mx - those kinds of comp come with cards like that alot - but your 1.1 ghz doesn't seem to match up with that assumption, as it would have been faster I would think. The reason I ask is that so many people I saw having trouble with GTA3 were trying to run it on a dell, gateway or something else like that. I dunno, I don't usually hear positive things about machines like that with intensive gaming. But if you did build your rig, then I have no idea what your problem is on this. But then if you built, why in the HAIL did you buy a geforce 4 mx? It's just basically a really fast geforce 2.
doslast
It's a clone system. I didn't get to choose the video card. I just tried the 3Danalyze program and that actually lowered my fps. Any solutions out there? I don't know what to do.
YourToast
I used to have the same problem until I upgraded to geforce 3 Ti. GTA 3 requires a DirectX 8.1 or higher and Geforce 4 MX is not a DirectX 8.1 compliant part.

Meaning you need a better CPU, not a better video card. sysnode.org
shurcool
ha! suckers! sorry, i would help you out if i knew how, but i don't... i'm just laughing cuz i got a meazly p3 500 mhz w/ a radeon 8500 and i'm getting same crap fps w/ slowdowns all the time like u! suckers, lol. Any solutions out there? I don't know what to do. There's your problem. It makes no technical sense to me since I don't know exactly what they do to screw you over - all I know is that they bend you over with cheap ass parts and lousy building. Seriously, I think that you would probably find several choke points in that system starting with the motherboard, ram, power supply etc. There are many ways cheap builders can cut costs and unfortunately, they all end up meaning one thing - LOWER PERFORMANCE. I feel your pain, I used to have an old micron that couldn't run crap. When I rebuilt, the only thing I kept was the zip and the floppy. Everything else was just tossed. I know it's not much help, but if you really want to see markedly improved performance, you're probably going to have to ditch the sucker and build something. It wouldn't cost much actually since you can get many middle-of-the-road parts for really really cheap. I just got my 2800+ for less than $200 and that's pretty close to top of the line. Good luck. doslast
But I'm pretty sure it's the game that's causing problems. I can run pretty much most games aside from VC without a problem.
trainspodder
I seem to have the exact same problem. No matter what resolution I pick, no matter what draw distance setting I choose, frame limiter on/off....the game lags seriously. It's so bad sometimes, I'm counting seconds per frame rather than frames per second. It's especially bad in scenes with lots of action, like in crashes. The sound also stutters. To make matters worse: the game even lags in the menus sometimes. Completely unplayable. Based on my system spec's, I shouldn't have any problems running the game. And I have never had any performance problems like this with this system, and I have a very good 3Dmark score for my system. I have defragmented, re-installed several times on different drives, used different cd drives, messed with all kinds of different audio/graphics settings, disabled all background apps including firewalls and virus apps. Nothing helps. I read through a similar thread on another board and it looks like there might be some compatibility issues with the Audigy cards. That would explain the performance problems even in the menus. I don't have any other sound cards with me so I can't check them to see if it works. For those with similar problems: What sound card are you using? And are you also experiencing problems even in the menu? My spec's: AMD Athlon 1.4 Ghz 512 MB DDR Asus Geforce 4 TI4200 128 MB using latest detonator drivers (44.03) - tried different drivers though without results Creative Audigy 2 platinum ex Windows 98 SE
The Quick and the Dead
Let me do an imitation of a newb. "Oh Oh I have a 1.8ghz processor and my super fast Geforce 4 mx 420 (I got it cuz I like the POT) and I run at the highest cuz i like the pretty and it runs at only 8 frames per second when I drive why why why? ? ? ? ?!?!?!?!?1111oneone!111!" Ok, all of thats true for me cept I didn't get it cuz i like the pot. I don't like the pot. If I can run at 1600x1200x32 at 8fps (wow) on this piece of sh*t, how come you can run with better vidcards at that resolution (OH WAIT! YOU NEVER MENTIONED A RESOLUTION! I already knew that, thats why i'm making fun of you). If you are getting 15fps at a high res like 1600 or 1024 or 1200, then you shouldn't be complainging and lower the resolution, or just switch to 16bit color. f*ck around and see what works.
