Favorite GTA Soundtrack?

Which GTA game has your favorite soundtrack and why?

Mine is San Andreas. I grew up in Los Angeles as a 90’s kid and a huge hip hop fan. A lot of the music reminds me of my roots. I always have had a soft spot especially for 90’s west coast rap aka G-Funk. The whole game kind of seemed like a dream come true game for me when it came out.

Vice City is a close second. I love 80’s music and grew up on it as well.

How about you guys?

Vice City, GTA V and GTA SA.

GTA V moreso for the in-game original soundtrack than the actual radio songs, though I think those are actually quite great too. Especially the rock and rap stations. I think Tangerine Dream, Woody Jackson and The Alchemist absolutely killed it with the original music for V, and I've always felt like it doesn't get the love it deserves. Hope to see them (the former two especially) back for VI and beyond.

GTA IV/EFLC, GTA Vice City and GTA San Andreas, They have the best soundtrack.

The rest of other GTAs had good soundtrack too, I still like it.

GTA Vice City, San Andreas and Vice City Stories have the best radio soundtrack

GTA IV has the best main soundtrack (Main Theme, Loading Screens)

GTA V has the best in-game soundtrack (Background Music)

SA for pretty much the same reasons as you, though I'm personally not a fan of 80s music.

IV and the episodes for its expansive variety of genres while keeping a mostly darker edge and aesthetic to fit the setting, and for having some of the best-written satire and jokes that still hold up today. It's pretty amazing how the radio can move from Minnie Riperton to Agnostic Front to Aphex Twin in a heartbeat.

V had a "softer" soundtrack compared to the other games, which makes sense considering the setting but the music does get really grating after a while.

VC/VCS - Arguably the best licensed soundtrack/music in a game.

San Andreas - Each radio fits every part of the map perfectly.

V/Online - The sheer amount of different radio stations and music is crazy. The Original Score is amazing.

GTA3 and LCS have the best in-house radio music IMO. I like how they hired local musicians from Scotland and even had a couple of employees of their own perform some songs there.

IV, TLAD and TBOGT have great OST by R*, even though I haven't played any of them yet. From theme songs to loading screen jingles, from mission passed tunes to pause menu music. Everything has top-notch quality.

Vice City has such an iconic soundtrack it partially revived the 80s. Even the mall music being a precursor to vaporwave sticks out as something influential.

GTA III. I still consider it subjectively the best game of all time, being its music one of the primary reasons.

The list follows as:
2. GTA LCS.
3. GTA SA.
4. GTA IV & EFLC.
5. GTA VC.
5. GTA VCS.
6. GTA 2.
7. GTA V.
8. GTA Chinatown Wars.

Vice City Stories just barely beats Vice City.

Without having listened to the entirety of VCS's soundtrack I am saying VC. San Andreas is second for me, but it can't quite live up to VC.

In terms of atmosphere: VC hands down, although VCS's soundtrack (particularly Paradise FM and The Wave 103) has grown on me over time. They both capture the 80's quite well, IMO.

Songs that I just like to listen to: It's a tossup between IV+EFLC and SA

IV and VCS.

I often listen to the songs that featured in these two games even when I don't play them for a while (e.g. songs from JNR and V-Rock).
