So, they're not using mobile versions codebase anymore, am I right?

Well it's different so yes

At least they are fixing it. Slowly, but step by step.

True, but for all we know, this update might be it (possibly aside from one final patch to coincide with the mobile versions). Going by Tez2's tweet from the summer, R* has been removing devs from (what I assume is) a skeleton crew working on the DE so the company can fully commit to working on GTA VI (things like this are why I'm not a fan of the "all hands on deck" approach to development they've taken since RDR2). I hate to be negative, but if what we've seen today is the fruits of R*'s labor after so many months of being kept in the dark (and if this is one of, if not the final major update), then it's too little, too late IMO.

That said, I would like to see if the above comment about the new codebase is true. As much as I despise the DE's art direction that seems like it's aimed at literal children, I honestly would have stomached it and given the games more of a chance had they not been based on the mobile ports (and all of the well-documented issues that arise from that). The implications of Tez's aforementioned tweet don't instill much confidence, though.

No, I don't think this is a final update.... Rockstar definitely doesn't like that sh*t

This is honestly just shameful. We waited 8 months for an update and the release notes are just "stability improvements".

I guess if you wanna have some hopium, the patch version being 1.04.5 is suggesting 1.05 is in the works?

GTA SA PC version got 18 GB update, is there a huge improvement exept motion blur?

These "remasters" are nearly a year old and have only received three or four sporadicly-released patches. And 8 months since the previous update, just for "stability improvements"?...

Spoiler

For PS5:

III (PS5): 872MB
Vice City (PS5): 1,81GB
San Andreas (PS5): 2,50GB

I have test it quickly, and the collisions problems still persists in some objects, ground...

yl9w27I.jpg

The performance is almost equal.

But what it seems that it's improved is the LOD, at least in Vice City. It's way improved. There are still some "ugly" buildings in the distance at some location, but I think that in general it's improved a lot. Before, it was a collage of deformed buildings (at least in console version).... Or maybe it's just a placebo? xD

Here an example:

9sALdCv.jpg

And I think that in general some textures have been reworked. And "parallel textures" fixed (repositioned better)?

Nt5G4hZ.jpg

These lights on top of the buildings... was there before?

nr66ids.jpg

And this effect of "hot air" of the helicopter? Was there before?

qFWLnqK.jpg

2nd picture from the top, the building on the left has parking texture applied to a building. I guess that also needs a fix.

Stability? Are they lying? xD I have tested (although just with my eyes), and I would say that is almost the same performance. At least with Fidelity mode. And it's far away from 30 fps "like a rock".

The huge size is a previous issue with how GTAV updates were handled. If the developer updates a small file packaged within a huge file. You may have to redownload the whole file again, instead of just applying the small change.

Yes, but remember. Now (months ago) they are focused on GTA VI.

I hope that when GTA VI be released, they can move some resources to Definitive Edition.

I think that the classics GTA deserve a better polish. They are a legacy.

From what Digital Foundry has mentioned, I assume this is due to poor framepacing (they recommend switching to Performance Mode because of this). It has never been fixed, to my knowledge. The PS2 on PS4 emulated versions of the OG Trilogy have the same issue, sadly.

Honestly, if we have to wait until 2024-2025 for the DE to be in an acceptable state, I think I'd prefer for R* to leave it as is and just relist the OG PS2 versions on PS4/PS5, make the OG Xbox versions backwards-compatible on One/Series X|S (I imagine Microsoft would make an exception to ending their BC program in that situation), and/or work on in-house remakesters from the ground up for GTA III's 25th (or even 30th) anniversary.

Exactly. The key is the frame pacing.

But, although the PS2 on PS4 has the same issue, overall they have a better performance than the Definitive Edition (DE has a poor optimization, is all brute force).

I think that should be "easy" to optimise. For example, put fog, like the original, and remove distant objects. With that, you should save a lot of calculations.

Yes, that is another approach. I prefer what you say.

the game still freezes for 1/2 sec after pause/unpause in high resolutions (4k) due to huge frame drop... i don't know if this problem was supposed to be related to this update tho

Jesus. This is disappointing. No update for months, and this is what we end up getting? I was considering getting the Switch version for a while, but if this is the long awaited stability update I was waiting for, then I will sit this one out.

Can only echo the disappointment being expressed...after such a long wait and complete radio silence from Rockstar this is what they put out?

I am however intrigued by the apparent change to the codebase and what that means for the future of these games.

I mean, it's disappointing, but not really surprising. If the Defecated Edition is what they consider "stable", I don't even want to imagine what they define as "unstable".

Cockstar earns their name more and more each day.

what "zephyr" is supposed to mean?

It's a built-in app for JIRA, the bug-tracking software that over the years became more of a project management tool.

Quote

A Jira Test Management tool is a Quality Assurance (QA) and Testing Management solution that can be employed within Jira. The Jira add-ons are often created to help QA teams achieve test automation, real-time information exchange, and the ability to reuse test cases. QA testing, tracking, and analysis can all be integrated using test management solutions like Zephyr for Jira.

Zephyr for JIRA is a native JIRA Software or JIRA Core application that offers test management to any JIRA project. The Zephyr Jira Integration allows tests to be generated and seen in any JIRA project, connected to other issues, conducted instantly or as part of a test cycle, and precise test data can be tracked via customizable metrics.

Spoiler

101018_1008_ZephyrforJI1.png

Rockstar uses both JIRA and Bugstar, but mostly the latter as JIRA is more integrated into Bugstar. If anything, this means GSG is still working on the Trilogy DE.

Anyways, the new code path proves the Trilogy is in a state of simply squashing bugs.

For anyone curious about this trilogy, simply don't buy it, it'll never get fixed on consoles, unless you play on PC and can install mods to fix it.

I don't know Bugstar, but I suppose it's a software similar to JIRA.

JIRA it's a software to manage "bugs" (in essence) in a team.

For example, the steps could be:

- the final user, or testers... report a bug in JIRA: describe the steps to reproduce it, set the priority...

- then it's created a ticket for that bug

- then, a developer get a ticket from a pool of tickets, and update the status of the ticket: "in study" (for example)

- the developer work on that bug, and update the status of the ticket: "working on" (for example)

- when the developer fix the bug, update again the status of the ticket: "fixed"

- finally, that bug fixed it's uploaded to a "branch" (with other sofware)

The new file structure might not mean GSG is out, maybe they're revamping security after the leaks and now they're adding lot of extra systems in between.

Off topic but about security that many of the updates to games under T2 umbrella might have been simply related to key rotation and other things of this nature just in case. So these file path changes could be similar restructuring.

Also off topic but (publicly traded) company 101 is to start hiring professionals in some sector if it's publicized in media as a weakness (i.e. naturally after a leak of that magnitude -> security professionals), to show investors that they're putting more internal investment into it. Whether or not those postings ended up in hirings yet, they might have found lot of things to improve also due to lot of pressure from C suite etc. Obviously also due to internal and external audits they get recommendations and such.

I can't understand the logic behind buying this trilogy.

The graphics doesn't work neither as a stable retro rendition or an upgraded remaster.

Content like dialogue, music and props were removed due to copyright penny pinching or plain self censure.

The buyers' expectations are now so low it boils down to 'at least make it suck a little less'

A player of the OG games will probably feel scammed, and new players on this buggy Trilogy mess will have the wrong impression that the originals were not that good after all.

I understand that us on console we're cornered to whatever they kindly toss to our plates, but PC players who wants to experience the real thing have more options available.
