No updates for 7+ months. One final update to redeem themselves for Vice City's 20th Anniversary soon? Or is it dead?

Also it's either 1 year Rockstar Launcher exclusive or forever exclusive which is so dumb lmao. Imagine how many sales they lost by not releasing it on Steam for so long :kekw:

I mean, what else do you need to be convinced?

The games have been updated in steamdb since the last title update in February (steamdb activity is being tracked over on reddit) with the last activity being from August, so that at least points to something being in the works. I imagine they either have abandoned it completely at this point, or we'll see something next month for the anniversary or possibly the mobile versions next year, if they even happen.

Can't wait for certain people to smugly excitedly claim "See that? R* didn't abandon the DE!" if it does happen to receive another patch a few months from now. Bonus points if the update mostly amounts to correcting grammar + minor bugfixes (just like the last one or two patches) as opposed to addressing critical, core-level issues.

Either way, it's honestly pathetic that, almost a year later, these train-wrecks are only ever so slightly better than the embarrassing state they were in at launch. It's fair enough if R*/T2 want to move on and bring as little attention to the DE as possible (can't say I'd blame them); but I'd prefer for them to definitively (pun intended) say whether or not there will be any more updates (aside from the mobile versions), rather than the constant loop of fans just guessing for months on end. It's one of the many examples of how poorly and rarely Rockstar communicates with their fanbase and customers in general (although I'll admit they've made small improvements in this regard throughout 2022, even if said changes only came about due to damage control from recent backlash and, later on, having no choice but to acknowledge the GTA VI leaks).

Aside from the whole issue of the state these games launched in, this is my main gripe with Rockstar. They'll spam their socials with GTA Online news/updates but won't take the time to put out a 'hey, we're still working on the next patch, stay tuned' every now and then.

So Vice City is coming to the higher-end PS+ tiers this month. For a split second, I was ecstatic; I've always thought PS+ Extra/Premium would be a good excuse for R* and T2 to make their back-catalog (including the OG Trilogy) available on current-gen platforms...

But then I reread the article title. And of course, it's just the bollocks Defective Edition...

:bruh:

Spoiler

Yeah, it's not actual "news", but it's therapeutic to commiserate and vent with you guys. :sadkek:

Can't wait for them to officialy abandon DE Trilogy and then blame it on community for poor reception and such negative comments, just like Relic Entertainment when they murdered Dawn of War franchise with that awful Dawn of War III and then blamed it on community. Amazing.

I mean, you could argue this has already happened behind the scenes: potential future remasters have been scrapped (at least for the time being) due to the DE's poor critical and financial reception (it initially sold well, but sales have slowed down quite a bit since launch). In other words, Rockstar and Take-Two aren't moving forward with remastered versions of GTA IV and RDR1 because, at the end of the day, fans didn't like the remasters that they were able to churn out (for obvious reasons).

Of course, the blame here falls almost entirely on R*/T2 themselves. It would be a massive understatement to say they shot themselves in the foot by farming out some of the most influential video games of all time to a small, inexperienced, ill-equipped team of mobile developers (multiple times over the past decade, to pour salt in the wound).

While you clarify this point, it should be really mentioned that the conclusion of R* and T2.

A better conclusion would probably be that the fans did not like their remasters.

Personally, while I am someone who is rather annoyed by the remake trend in the film industry as well as in the gaming industry, I would have certainly bought the 3D Trilogy remake if it had offered the same game with just advanced textures, keyboard mapping options, etc. or/and some advanced possibilities for the modding community, because they would have fixed bugs and improved it in general.

They really should have ported it to the GTA 5 engine imo, that would have promised a lot potential.

Are mobile releases still a thing? I haven't heard anything about DE Trilogy being released on Android/iOS for some time. Have they been scrapped?

A few months ago, the mobile versions were quietly delayed until some point before the end of Take-Two's current fiscal year (so by March/April 2023 at the latest). Aside from that, we've been stuck with Rockstar's trademark silence as usual.

Curious to hear whether you guys see the mobile versions being pushed back as indicative of either delay resulting in total abandonment, or delay in order to try and optimise the games as much as possible before releasing the mobile versions?

My take is they want the controversy to die down a little first, wait for everyone to forget about the negativity and then release the mobile versions to a less critical crowd.

I think it's a mixture of waiting for the fires surrounding the DE itself to further burn out and, more importantly, the fact that the mobile versions simply aren't in a good enough state to be released at the moment. If the atrocious quality of these remasters on consoles and PC (of which R*/T2/GSG somehow deemed acceptable enough for release) is anything to go by, I can't even imagine how bad they are on smartphones/tablets.

INCIDENTAL EDIT: Never thought I'd give a backhanded legitimate compliment to the DE, but at least each game includes a 60FPS performance mode like almost every other title on 9th Gen consoles (albeit, not a locked 60 due to GSG's garbage optimization), unlike Gotham Knights...

Riddle me this: Why are people still looking forward to patches somehow fixing a game that's fundamentally broken?

I think the big problem here is the words you used that I made bold. The game is unequivocally broken, because it was a lazy port, NOT of the OG versions, but the inherently flawed cell phone versions from 10+ years ago. The current gen ports (I refuse to call them remasters) are essentially ports of ports of ports. The metaphor that comes to mind is in the old days of photocopying, if you started from an original clean, perfect page, you got a great copy. But what if you first faxed that page with an older fax machine that blurred the print a little, then you spilled a cup of coffee on it, and finally made a copy? of that It would look awful.

That's the natural extension of your point. The Defective Edition is horribly flawed not because of "a glitch" as Zelnick said, but because it is a port of a version of the game that is analogous to a copy made of a document after you spilled coffee on it, crumpled it up, and then tried to flatten it just a bit before putting it on the copier. I have said this many times: the laziness of starting with the cell phone ports is what did this iteration of the Trilogy in, not some glitches.

And this is all said with the caveat that I LOVE those mobile ports, I really do; on my iPhone and my iPad. Had anyone from Rockstar bothered to use screen mirroring to just muck around with those old mobile ports, BEFORE commissioning GSG to create DE, they would have realized that as glorious as these games are on a screen that fits in the palm of your hand, they are complete garbage when you use screen mirroring to play them on one a big screen 4K TV. Your point is spot on. They started from garbage (for modern TV's and monitors), and they tried to pretty it up a bit. You can wash and bathe a pig all day long, and cover it with body wash and perfume to your heart's content, but at the end of the day, a pig is still a pig. That's the problem with DE. What it should really be called is: GTA The Trilogy: A Pig Is Still a Pig Edition.

The GTA Trilogy DE has a new codebase path. Grove Street Games is no longer associated with this project.

For PS5:

III (PS5): 872MB
Vice City (PS5): 1,81GB
San Andreas (PS5): 2,50GB

I have test it quickly, and the collisions problems still persists in some objects, ground...

yl9w27I.jpg

The performance is almost equal.

But what it seems that it's improved is the LOD, at least in Vice City. It's way improved. There are still some "ugly" buildings in the distance at some location, but I think that in general it's improved a lot. Before, it was a collage of deformed buildings (at least in console version).... Or maybe it's just a placebo? xD

Here an example:

9sALdCv.jpg

And I think that in general some textures have been reworked. And "parallel textures" fixed (repositioned better)?

Nt5G4hZ.jpg

These lights on top of the buildings... was there before?

nr66ids.jpg

And this effect of "hot air" of the helicopter? Was there before?

Meh, the art style is still f*cking revolting. Have they fixed the spelling errors on storefronts and the timeline anachronisms? I'm guessing most likely not.

But hey, take your time Rockstar. Maybe some day this thing won't be a complete piece of sh*t.

At least they are fixing it. Slowly, but step by step.

And as someone say above... What is this: 😱

🤞 cross fingers, and we hope that it be for a better management (if it's confirmed, or whatever that means).
