A Note/Update from Rockstar regarding the Trilogy Definitive Edition

From what I see they did improve the performance in the games especially on consoles, which is good. The code team definitely put an effort into fixing some aspects of the games, although it seems that new issues have arisen, like here. Hopefully they iron out more of these issues in the future.

However, I can't say the same about the assets team. The current changes are extremely small. Acoording to Vadim and the Yakuza don't have the Diablo logo anymore, one of the Vagos members has fewer GSF tattoos. K-Jah in III is the only radio that got its icon changed back to the III variant. Those CJ pants are better than the ones that came originally, but it's definitely the result of an AI. Which brings me to the question: what are they doing?

It's been 3 months since the last update, and the issue assets have barely been updated. Some of this stuff could've easily been changed, even less of a hassle than fixing the Tuff Nuts building. I'm mainly refering to the roads near the airport in III, the intersection near the Shoreside Lift Bridge also in III, and the issues here and here. Unless they work on other projects (Ark or something that is under NDA), what are they actually doing? I know those exe dates don't have any correlation to the assets, but I really hope they didn't do any updates for a month or so, like the III/VC exe files suggest.

R* and Take2 are quick to take down mods and send C&Ds to their authors that make better stuff than them, like the original Vice Cry, but can't even allocate some resources for helping this mobile studio they hired for these "remasters" to fix their official "alternatives" to said mods? Sad.

Swimming seems to be still absolutely broken, irrespective of framerate. Also, can somebody check Chilliad? Is it only me or does all fake geometry (dummy rocks) is completely gone, but so is foliage on the mountain? Now it looks like the dreadful mobile version with its barren ground.

Playing a while all titles, and it seems that is improved the performance better in the "performance mode" than the "fidelity mode", although both are been improved (slightly).

Ugh. This is one of the most aggravating quirks of SA's original mobile port. Because the button inputs were essentially mapped to an invisible on-screen widget, you can no longer swim faster by rapidly tapping the sprint button (this is also why you can't "infinitely" sprint in III/VC anymore). It makes the Beat the Cock triathlon unnecessarily difficult to complete (even with maxed out stamina), since you spend the swimming portion moving slower than molasses. I can understand this change on touchscreens, but it's mind boggling that GSG never addressed it when porting SA to PS3/360, and especially when working on the DE. The latter restored pressure-sensitivity while using the triggers to drive (something the original mobile ports lacked), so it doesn't seem like it would be impossible to revert things like the sprinting and swimming mechanics to their original states.

Issues like these are why I'm vehemently against the original mobile ports being used as the basis for these new versions. All of the small changes GSG deemed "necessary" add up, and as a result, the games just feel incredibly odd to play.

Yep, I can confirm foliage from Chilliad has been completely removed. Also, what do you do if patches of grass you placed don't match world geometry? Do you fix it? Nope, you delete it and leave nothing but ground texture:

MI_wmyva2_var2 only exists in the new patch and MI_wmyva2_var1 is removed

Are you able to see if they've upgraded Smoke's clothing? His shirt looked a lot high res with this patch

Why does this patch feel like a downgrade? I mean better performance but price is loss of detail and texture/model problems and other bugs are still not fixed.

This is Grove Street's Games solution to optimization of 20 years old unstable new versions of games.

Just downgrade them until they play more smoothly, even if it takes 3 months.

It is indeed gone, checked on my Series S, just finished the Whetstone chapter last time I played, so very fresh memory of a bushy mountain. Weirdly it's only Chiliad that seems to have foliage removed. I saw plenty of it on my way there, even directly next to chiliad. Maybe a bug? I doubt Chiliad would be the biggest problem for foliage rendering considering there's a huge ass forest next to it that still has all of it.

(Checked on Series S btw, not paying for the Trilogy, just got SA from GamePass)

I see there are many Emissive Map and Roughness Map updates. Did you experience this during cutscenes or elsewhere?

They have added new details such as KnitFabric, Leather, SynthFab, WornLinen normal maps so that's pretty nice. You might notice that on the corresponding clothing

I don't understand this. Why did they mess up the camera movement with mouse again like how it was on Day 1 patch? It's like they reverted. It's behaving like I'm on console. This is really unplayable for me.

Also, they have disabled bEnableMouseSmoothing by default which was on before

Edit: Okay so it's a bug. It fixed itself after I alt tabbed back in

Try not to take the reactions too seriously around here. Personally, it was sort of my silly, tongue in cheek way of saying the DE hasn't really been "fixed" (in that, even after the newest update, it's nowhere near Rockstar's typical standards). I didn't mean for it to sound condescending. And the :kekw: is pretty much @Zello's calling card. It would be weird not to see that reaction from him, tbh.

To answer your original question, the latest patch has made some legitimate improvements (mostly on the performance side of things, which is especially helpful for the Switch version). However, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done before these versions have any business being called the "Definitive" way to play The Trilogy. I doubt the art direction will drastically change (if at all) in future updates, sadly, but there are still numerous bugs that need to be fixed; from the bugs exclusive to the DE, to the mobile ports' quirks (such as nerfed gym minigames and slow swimming), to even the issues that date back to the original PC ports (like the high FPS glitches). Correcting the poor grammar present in a lot of the textures would greatly help the presentation, too.
