Adjusting myself to 80’s affairs, I found this to be superior to today’s television. And I’m in it now for just the first episode. Telling.

The first episode was actually intelligent and engaging. Superbly written. In fact it makes me question modern tv writers as a whole.

Favorite line: “Thanks a sh*t. I mean really. Thanks a complete sh*t.”

Favorite shot: 27ish minutes in there’s a boat to mirror shot that was excellent. There’s a few more, and the director went on to do things that got rave accolades, but as I perused his following film work, I realized he didn’t impress me much, as he went on with his career. However, his camera work and actor portrayal in this was admirable.

The cameo from Colin Dexter halfway through was a nice touch.

And the Morse Code from the orchestra telling you who the killer was, was outside of the box. Wayyyy outside the box. And amazing in its own right.

So interesting television can’t layer upon excellence. It rather chooses to ignore it.

Looking forward to more 80’s excellence as I get more acquainted with Morse.

Recommend this:

Good Night Mr. Tom

not a Mystery but a drama

Good acting of John Thaw/Kevin Whatley with great plots based on the novels by Colin Dexter.

The theme is also great.

Thank you for the recommendation, fa!

Purchased a copy from what I suss is an aging man with poor eyesight but otherwise fully functional, given his chosen background.

It was prime-time viewing at my grandparents' house when I was a kid, that and "A Touch Of Frost", which stars another one of our national treasures Sir David Jason. I long discounted them as being stuffy and boring police dramas when I was that age but I've come to appreciate the standard this kind of television sought to set. I liked Frost mostly because up until that point my only real awareness of David Jason's work was comedy (Only Fools And Horses) or light-hearted family escapades (Darling Buds Of May). Seeing him turn into this bristling world-weary old man was one of my first introductions to just how versatile an actor can be, believe it or not. I was never big into movies or TV when I was a kid. I didn't seek anything out, I just watched what I was plopped in front of or whatever was going on in the background.

Of course, John Thaw is an OG. It's already been mentioned but "Goodnight Mr. Tom" was such a captivating watch for me. I heartily recommend Frost though purely for the theme alone.
