I hadn't played SA since like 2009 and I just recently started playing the Xbox 360 version (not the best version and has an annoying radio song skipping glitch - I know now I should've got the older Xbox version but it's fine). I'm really enjoying it and I kind of forgot about the "Definitive Edition" existing - until I wanted to look up about the girlfriends' preferences on the GTA wiki which has the DE character models as the default pictures. I'd already seen the horrible character models before but HOLY sh*t, I couldn't believe what I was seeing running across them unexpectedly like that. They're beyond a joke, I don't know how anyone can play a game that looks that ugly and is so completely devoid of artistic integrity. From this to this , f*ck me.

In some twisted way, DE has made me appreciate the Xbox 360 version slightly. Not for the graphics but for the controls. The combat controls in DE suck ass, like badly. It's like they doubled-down on the poor controls of the 360 version. Doing a drive-by in DE, Jesus...

Out of all the f*cking awful choices made with the DE, the character models are easily the most embarrassing. It's shocking to even consider that actual human beings were responsible for putting these together, and not some AI upscaler (though I wouldn't be surprised whatsoever if the latter was indeed the case).

I was one of several who tried to convince the editors on GTA Wiki not to use these abominations on character pages, but to no anvil. I guess letting you switch between the DE and the original is a good enough compromise, but to do so is to unfortunately acknowledge the existence of this disgrace.

I got even more complaints from my current experience with DE:

- For some dumb reason, if I reload the game while driving a car, CJ will sprint uncontrollably when he loads in. This is a minor issue since it can be dealt with by intentionally pressing the sprinting button which disables the bug. But it still happens often enough that it gets frustrating.

- There's too much garbage in CJ's garage. Saving two cars in the Johnson House is an unreasonable task because there's tons of trash laying next to the wall. There's no need for this, it's only there for "immersion", but it's that sh*tty type of immersion that only exists to impede your experience.

- Denise is calling me all the time now. On PS2, I believe she would only call if you had not gone out with her for maybe a week or so. Now she's calling me basically every day to go on dates. Similarly, it seems like hood attacks are more frequent as well. I knew they were common on PS2 but they feel like they're happening non-stop on this version.

Minor gripes I guess. They still add up in the grand scheme of things though and give me a lesser experience than the one I'm used to.

That's what happens when you have no consistent art style in mind.

I’m dipping my toe back into this version on gamepass, my dumb completionist ass can’t resist getting all the achievements. I got to about 75% last year until I couldn’t take any more.

Already I’m remembering why I didn’t finish it lol. Have GSG acknowledged the issues with the combat? Surely the enemy 100% accuracy isn’t intended? And for the love of god, just bring back the original lock-on reticule with the snappier response time.

Combat is an absolute mess with the combination of insane enemy accuracy + sluggish unresponsive controls for us.

I’ve literally died more times in this version than my last 5 play throughs put together lol, and I’m still in Venturas..

Also I had a crash at the elevator in the Caligula heist lol, never happened to me before in the old versions. On a Series X.

edit: just been doing some side activities and I just don’t understand why they messed with the mechanics so much.. anything involving a bike (bmx challenge, chilliad challenge, NRG challenge etc) is now much more forgiving and easier. But combat - turf wars etc - is much harder lol. It’s all over the place. Why have they tried to rebalance everything like this?

I've felt that too with the enemy accuracy. I know San Andreas can be somewhat challenging early on since your stats are weak, but I did not remember the enemies decimating you as much as they do during gang territories. Combat in this version is just very clunky, I have no idea what they did to it. The only saving grace I can say is that I'm getting used to the controls, but that's like saying eating vomit tastes less bad the 10th time you do it.

I'm never touching these sh*tty Wardrum/GSG versions again lmao, it has almost made me dislike San Andreas. Even with the latest patch on Series X in performance mode I had several crashed to dashboard. Man these ports are absolute trash.

I played Supply Lines today and holy goddamn...

Now I know Supply Lines is pretty hated and considered to be difficult by many, I would consider myself pretty good at it. Heck, in high school, a friend of mine couldn't beat it so I went over to his house and beat it for him in one try. It's just another mission for me now.

But this version, Jesus. The controls are mega floaty, it's like I'm flying a cloud rather than an RC plane. There's like 1/4 input delay on everything I do, except for moving the camera which has a full blown 1/2 second delay. I was flopping the plane all over the place trying to keep it under control, it was a miracle I finished the mission at all.

The only change I can see is that they gave you tons more fuel than you actually need. Even with all my screw ups, I had 80% fuel left when usually I would have 50%.

I think they added the loads more fuel part back with the Xbox 360 version (or maybe with the mobile version). I also found it pretty horrible on there because of the controls but also had loads of fuel. Used to nearly run out every time on PS2.

SA my favorite of GTA, there are a lot differnt games similar to it for now, but it remains number 1. Recently came across Retro Games For Sale and started playing again, decided to fall into nostalgia and remembered how it pissed me off always when CJ went to the gym. You had to click a million times to lift the bar. So I used cheat codes. There are questions to the graphics and square faces, I would like more different clothes for CJ.

This guy has played the PS2 original in order to tell us what's significantly wrong with the "Definitive Edition". The look, the atmosphere, the art style.

At the beginning of the video, he is in Las Venturas at the casino, and you can see that heat haze effect, the fog, and recognize the lower draw distance. You literally feel you're in a hot place, somewhere in the desert. It feels natural, as the creator of this video said. He kinda over-uses the word "natural" - but he is right. Then he flies around with a plane, all around the map - the fog and haze even has unique colours, depending on where you are. So much love, so much detail.

In the DE, everything looks crystal clear, every place looks the same, NO effects at all, no unique weather for all those specific areas, you can see Los Santos and the forest from the casino due to the absent fog effect and the ridiculous draw distance. This video is a perfect example why the PS2 version is in fact the REAL definitive edition of SA. The DE cripples the art style, the atmosphere, the natural look of all those specific areas. It feels like nobody at GSG played SA back then on PS2, Xbox or PC.

The thing is: Effects like in the video above could look even better, modernized, and so on, if developers actually cared for it. I think with some effort, a true remaster of SA could easily outclass the PS2 version visually, and still have that "magic". But no, they removed that completely, making the whole game look fake and dull.

This sh*t bother me more than the bugs, actually. WTF, GSG? Seriously, WTF?

My main gripe to the Definitive Edition is that there was no simple quality control of the result of the game, although it would not be too difficult to hire a couple of people who will walk around the entire map in the game before release to find errors and incorrect collisions in it, as an example.

But the fact that there was no error test is very clearly visible at least in the content of the textures, as well as in grammatical errors and typos in the text, which an adult could hardly make. Once upon a time I made a video in which I wanted to collect all the textures with errors, but then I found another place in the casino and now I will show it to you.

On which platform are you playing? Both issues are non-existant for me on PC version...
