Screw GTA 6, bring out Mafia Rockstar style

Recommended Posts

Im so so fed up with modern GTA games its unbelievable.

I feel like Mafia by Rockstar with same budget as GTA 5 or RDR2 could really really make it off. And there is so so so much that can be done with prohibition era both single and multiplayer.

Gangs, turfs, upgrading own crew, upgrading equipment, cars, radio stations, roaring 20s, you name it. Something for a change. I loved Mafia series to the bits, especially the first one. I would literally stuffed my money down Rockstar throat if they did game like that.

Please no another modern GTA nonsense. How much can you beat a dead horse.

Cmon guys speak up what would you prefer. I heard rumours that GTA 6 will be in southern America and Vice City just so...they can put drugs in them to make it more reaslistic to keep people playing?

Well I pass...

I mean, I'm sure Rockstar could do some good stuff with the Mafia franchise but I'd much rather they keep making GTA and someone else make Mafia games than not have GTA anymore.

I don't really put much stock in the GTA VI/ South America rumors, though. Or any GTA VI rumors for that matter.

Mafia attempts to accomplish something much different from GTA...

Agreed, two completely different games.

Didn't play Mafia 3 but Mafia 2 is one of my favourite games ever. Not crazy about a mafia theme in GTA but they done a good job with the mafia story arch in IV so I'd be open to it.

Remember what Mafia 2 was supossed to be before Take Two took over the whole project? Well, there is that.

I personally preferred the 50s mafia time period. The end of the prohibition era and the beginning of the drug era was very interesting when heroin was taking off. Mafia 2 captured that decently, but it was only a small part of that game. I think it would be cool to work your way up the chain to get made and advance your way up the ladder in a family.

For me the perfect period for a game based around the Mafia would be the 1970s-80s after the RICO act passed in 1970 people were snitching each other out and there was a lot of backstabbing, power struggles and civil wars within families that would make for a great story.

Remember that Mafia II had hours and hours of content cut from the game.

Oh yes I know, there was so much that would have been great had they put it in. I always hoped someone would make a drug dealing mod or some other script mods to add more crimes into that game but nobody did. That's such a great story line and I took a look at the cut content restored and some of it is freaking amazing.

I mean... the mafia games are completely different from GTA aside from superficial similarities like "they have open worlds" and "they have cars" and "they have crime". So, like, what could a bunch of people used to writing comedic stuff (and GTA "Beeg american teets" IV is not exempt from this) add to the mafia franchise, which is generally known for being much more dramatic and stuff?

Also, why should 2k czech lose the mafia franchise to begin with? I mean, they're not my favorite games in the world, but they very clearly scratch a very particular itch for some people out there, and it doesn't look like 2k czech has majorly screwed it up in any way.

Plus, with the added demand to cancel the next GTA, it kind of feels like you're really just trying to signal how much more mature you are to people because you prefer the mature game to the funny game, and I can't help but see people who post that stuff as anything but teenagers. Yes timmy, we get it, you're very grown up, fine, you can stay up past your bedtime tonight.

To be perfectly honest, I really like it whenever a GTA game has a very diverse atmosphere of different ethnic mafias or mobs. I know of a game called Yakuza, which I have never played but it looks highly interesting. If they ever made a game titled Russian Mafia, Irish Mob, or Triad, which focuses on those gangs, I’d literally shove money down their throats and eat the game up!

What if I told you there isn't a modern GTA game out there? The last one is over 8 years old...

GTA Online technically is a modern title ever since the timeskip it takes place in present day.

That's time setting. I'm talking modern as in when it was developed/released. GTA V is a game developed around 2009 - 2013 for consoles built in 2005. GTA V isn't a 'modern' game.

Yeah I know, but pretty sure OP was just implying he doesn't want games set in modern times, which GTA V was at least at the time of its release. 😛 Which I kinda understand because over the last 8 years there was nothing but updates to a modern day GTA title.

Oh, they were. I was just being technical and smart ;)

Not much else going on around here and Rockstar aren't making a 1920's GTA game.

Speaking of the 1930s/40s, I always felt GTA III had a light influence from that time period.

The cabbies, the Mafia, a few of the pedestrians, the neo-noir vibe, even the theme song screams that era. Not to mention the premise has a bit of a Catcher in the Rye feel.

Yea thats exactly what I meant I should of clarify that.

But can you imagine guys how big campaign can be if set in 20s. Over period of say 10-15 years, campaign just as rich with map just as big as RDR2. Prison breaks, going up family ranks I can just sit there and listing. And dont even get me started with multiplayer, boats, planes, smuggling alcohol. Contentwise just as big as GTA in modern times. And I must say I am not even fan of online play, but hell I would give in this time, I freakin would.

Well the problem I got with Mafia games is that they are not very ambitious. Once you dusted with campaign, that's it. You got this big ass world that was done to near perfection with so much work put in with NO multiplayer. NO end game activities to keep you stucked in.

Well, the mafia games are technically linear experiences in sandbox worlds, but more importantly, the third mafia game does have an open world and free roam and what not. Besides, rockstar canceling GTA, their most profitable franchise, would be insane. I get it, you want a game series you see potential in to be taken on by a developer you like, but that's not how the business world works, and Rockstar isn't going to kill their biggest cash cow for no reason.

CynicalMexican

This is kind of a tangent, but the reason Grove Street Games are behind the remasters is because well, Rockstar kinda has to let them do them.

Rockstar could remaster it themselves, sure, but if a company is expected to expand, the other studios need to do major projects.

Given T2's plans of expansion, Grove Street Games is probably going to be a studio that gets more work and eventually becomes a proper Rockstar studio with better resources. Hopefully that means more games.

Quite ironic, because Mafia II and III were actually supossed to be very ambitious during their development fase, but Take Two is always rushing them to release them as soon as possible, removing and scrapping a lot of content in the process. Mafia II was supossed to have 20 Chapters and more than 100 missions, plus tons of side missions, side activities and even little features like hair-dressers and purchaseable properties, we were going to have a full sandbox set in the 1950's, but we ended up with a short linear game that happens to be set in an explorable city, and while it still is a good game, it ends up feeling rather lacking when you see all the potential it actually had:
