Loading times on consoles

How much time it takes for XBOX and PlayStation players to load into  empty lobby or lobby with at least 10 people? I play Online on PC and want to know numbers.

And are there any differences between loading directly into Online and loading into Story Mode and then loading into Online

I'm on PS4. And whether there are 0, 5, 10, or 30 players in a lobby it always takes between 30 seconds to 1-2 minutes on average to successfully load into a lobby. Only rarely does it take longer than perhaps 2 minutes for a successful loading. And I have never noticed any difference between loading into online directly or loading into single player and then online.

I am on Wi-Fi with DSL router for what it matters.

On Series X and once all the splash screens are done it takes four seconds to load into Single Player. Loading into Online is gimped by the need to do the cloud animation, without that it would load in about ten seconds.

For me at least, loading into Story Mode and into Online makes difference. Before March update loading   from SP to MP took about 3 and half minutes(and 50 seconds to load  SP savefile) while directly to MP more than 8 minutes.

For now loading time greatly decreased but loading directly to MP still takes longer.

And loading into invite only/empty lobby takes roughly 40 seconds

Never timed it but similar experience for me on the XBox One. Direct to MP is noticeably longest. SP-to-MP-to-Invite Only is fastest.

(I have cable internet and my XBox is wired.)

PS5 loads story mode in just a few seconds. Once the lights and guns go off and the mandatory splash screens the game is loaded before you can read the first board that pops up. Story to online takes about the same time as PC but the largest sessions take the most time. Going to invite only takes a few seconds. All this is via wired connections on both setups.

Same here.

It has always made me wonder how the PC version of Grand Theft Auto V (story mode, single player) takes longer to load than the new consoles (Xbox or PlayStation) - surely something is wrong there and PC should be at the top of the chain.
Unless Rockstar Games not even looking at or addressing that issue is an intentional thing to push people to the console platforms so there's "less people to think about" on PC.

Maybe on PC it just checks the hardware, and because of that it takes longer. I mean consoles are always the same, there are no different configs, and PC user's got different versions of operating systems installed, it's just not always the same like on console. PC's are more complicated, but im pretty sure it's only the first loadscreen that takes longer on PC, after your in it's the same or faster than consoles. Well if the PC is faster than the new consoles of course.

I've been playing on PS4 and I have never seen it take less than 1 minute, it's always 1 minute and 30 seconds or longer.

Ok. Figured since I'm right here doing nothing I would load up the games while holding a stop watch.

PC Version through R* games launcher. Not sure it matters but differing specs were mentioned so perhaps others can try if they have the means. i9-9900K, 2070 Super, 32GB, M2 NVMe SSD

Standard issue PS5. Disc version, 4K TV. My copy of GTA is digital.

For the initial launch. I had the game load directly to Story Mode. I started the watch as soon as I saw the "Loading Story" message (After sirens and first two splash screens) on both PC and PS5. Stopped as soon as the Camera lands on the street looking at Franklin.

PC----34 Seconds

PS5----15 Seconds

I then went from Story to Online. Started the watch as soon as I hit the accept button to join online. Stopped once the camera was showing my character get out of the bed.

PC----50 Seconds. Character was in her Casino Penthouse.

PS5----1 Minute and 23 Seconds. Character was in her Auto Shop.

Just for the hell of it I checked the time from Online back to Story, zero play time. Started at the same button prompt and stopped once the camera was outside of Michaels house.

PC----14 Seconds

PS5----21 Seconds.

I haven't played on a PS4 in over a year but I remember the load times on it were absolutely terrible, especially when going from story to online.

Wasnt there the whole thing about some guy having figured out they used some half broken age old json loader? and then (because of pressure trough social media) R* fixed it and loading times improved?

Anywho i mostly made this post to say yes, going from sp to mp is a lot faster then straight to mp.

What kind of surprises me is that even though my pc is older and less powerful compared to @dieseltech20, i go from sp to (public) mp considerably faster, like half the time in most cases. So i think location (distance between you and nearest internet exchange) and internet speed are a pretty big factor too.

Also worth noting, for what should be a pretty obvious reason, going from sp to 'invite only' is the fastest.

I stopped it 59 seconds with my stopwatch without recording it.

Using this hardware, installed on the M2.

ASUS TUF GT501, ASUS TUF B550-PLUS, be quiet! POWERZONE 850W, Ryzen 9 5950x cooled with ASUS ROG RYUJIN 360, ASUS TUF RTX 3080 OC, Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB 32 GB DDR4 3200 MHZ, Samsung 970 EVO PLUS 1TB NVMe, Samsung 860 QVO 2 TB SATA, WD Gold 16 TB HDD

It's a bit slow, probably because i didn't clear the cache and whatnot. Oh now i read that @dieseltech20 started stopping the time after the splashes, yeah then it's the same time, or a bit faster, i don't know watch the video and stop it yourself lol. :D

Edit: It's exactly 30 seconds if the time is stopped like diesel did, so exactly twice the time the PS5 needs.

Edit2: Some more tests, first video directly into random public session, second from SP to random public, third from SP to Solo. This means going directly into Random Public Session is the shortest loadtime. So now i know, i won't load into SP before anymore, if i wanna play online, it is a tiny bit faster. :D

Edit3: For completions sake, i have 50 mbit down and 10 mbit up internet speed, if that matters in anyway. Can't get faster internet here it's sad, down the street they can have up to 800 mbits or even a gigabit im not sure. :D

300 Mbps connection, Central Florida, wife was streaming a TV show in the living room while I was doing my tests. My last speed test showed that our internet connection is good and fast. I'm wired but the cable is a long one so that may affect times?

Would need to make multiple tests to get an accurate gauge on things because I have seen the game load both faster and slower so I'm sure more than the users own hardware/connection comes into play with online loading.

Going to continue playing on PS5 because I hate dealing with menu bullsh*t. My god the game looks so much better on a PC though. Really should play through the story on it.

Are not PS4 and Xbox1 versions of GTA V are PC versions on High settings?

Since the JSON issue was fixed on PC, loading times should be similar to current-gen consoles (PS5 & XBS/X) if not slightly faster.

When loading into a public session, at first it would take the same amount of time it takes to load into an invite lobby. Going by your testing, that's about 40 seconds. Right after that is when matchmaking kicks in and becomes a factor in deciding loading times. The longer it takes to load into a lobby, the higher the likelihood of you landing in a lobby whos host is a bit further than your whereabouts.

I remember measuring the loading time of matchmaking and sometimes it took me 10 to 20 seconds after the initial 40 seconds. Other times it took a bit longer and that's when I knew I was joining players who were a bit further than my geolocation. I looked up their profiles and it checked out.

Basically, when it comes to loading into a public session, it depends on latency and location.

I'm not super experienced with the nitty gritty details of 'the interwebs' but pretty sure i do get 'a better deal' even tho i'm only on 150mbps, it comes down to the distance between me and IX points + key server parks, apparently your closest Internet Exchange (FL-IX) is in Miami, roughly how far would you say you are from that? because im only like a ~10 minute walk from my nearest IX (one of the NL-IX hubs) and only a few kilometers from the main 'AMS-IX' hub for most of Europe.

And where would you guess the R* servers are in the US? anywhere close? in my case there's several key server parks at that AMS-IX a few km away where most international companies have their servers for Europe, while i cant confirm R* has servers there*** its very likely that they do. I pretty much get low ping everywhere / in all games / with all services. Just think of it in the sense of "how many hubs between me and R* / between me and other players", in your case your packets will have to go trough a lot of infrastructure inside of the US, but mine dont, i can 'hit a key server park' or 'leave the country' pretty much directly. And while i 'only' have 150mbps, i actually get that speed pretty much anywhere.

*** =

Spoiler

They dont disclose who uses those parks, but i visited one of the server parks attached to the nearby AMS-IX like 8 years ago (somebody i used to work with knows one of the co-owners) and there were entire floors for Microsoft Google etc, and then shared floors for most international companies, pretty sure R* has their Europe servers on one of those shared floors.

On a side-note, holy balls that place was legit crazy even back then, it was more like some military lab, dudes with assault rifles, full body x-ray scanners, airlocks & special clothing, some kind of 3-4 factor authentication (gotta pre-book access 24h ahead wich gets you a temp key to get trough the first door, once inside you give fingerprints for a second temp key & get sent a 3rd temp key & then you need all 3 to get access to floors/rooms) and then there was gas filled rooms to prevent fires and unauthorized access that you had to book access too beforehand (good luck trying to break in when you cant breathe lol)
