And the most important questions is about the GTA Trilogy, can Tommy swim?

New outfit additions include Floaties. Try new vehicles such as the Inflatable Inner Tube. Driveby shootings on the water have never been so easy!

More realistically, CJ can now not swim due to fragile childhood trauma and will die immediately on impact of water.

Claude's backstory now reveals he is an amphibious gilled humanoid, unable to speak due to his biological constraints.

It would be cool if they gave Tommy the ability to swim after getting a pair of water wings which you would unlock somehow, it would be a cool reference to the now deceased Driver series.

Algonquin Assassin

Won’t be added (as much as I’d love it to be).

It would be funny though that if everytime we go into the water we get eaten by a shark since that was the original in canon explanation why Tommy couldn’t swim in OG Vice City because of the shark infested waters.

It's interesting how most people talk about wanting Tommy to swim and not Claude. It's probably because of the Miami setting but still. I barely spend any time swimming in GTA, it's more a convenience so that you don't drown while trying to get on a boat or something, but that would be helpful for both Tommy and Claude.

Anyway just an observation heh. Liberty City waters are rather murky anyway, hopefully they'll be cleaner in the definite editions...

The water looks really good in the image of the train in the foreground of the Staunton Island skyline.

I'd like it for both III and Vice City, wouldn't mind there being collectables too. But I expect no changes. We'll see.

Couldn't swim when he was fit. Expect him to do it now?

Maybe he'll float instead. 🤣

Not gonna happen unless they add spots where you could climb out of, like in VCS. And the islands haven't been redesigned, as seen in the Dodo footage... they still have huge cliffs.

Now that has me thinking. It’s all well and good to be wishful, but then we have to remember that Vice City and GTA III for that matter weren’t originally designed with a swimming mechanic in mind (beyond what the games explain).

If it was a ground up remake I would expect something like this to be added since they would probably reprofile the geography and add things like you say climbing spots to make it a viable feature, but what is essentially going to be the same game mechanically I can’t see them messing around with new mechanics that weren’t apart of the original design.

It would certainly be a nice surprise to be proven wrong, but I won’t be counting on it.

Hey! We're talking about Tommy Vercetti here, not Timmy Vermicelli...

To be honest, even the basic surface swimming mechanics in VCS were a welcome addition, and I'm not sure how I'd feel if Tommy still hasn't learnt to stay above water in the Definitive Edition – it would seems like such a step back gameplay-wise.

I'm expecting it to stay true to its original on that one.

For swimming to make sense, there needs to be more to do in the water, and more vehicles to make use of it. San Andreas has that but Vice City doesn't.

I think GTA III's water was more of a technical limitation for the hardware at the time. Even Vice City's water isn't all that transparent. You have to really look hard to see what lurks below.

I highly doubt Tommy Vercetti can now swim. I wouldn't mind it, but to be honest, I love the danger feeling of the water. It kind of makes it more immersive for me. IRL, even though I'm a good swimmer and swim in the sea a lot, I'd avoid going into the water in any other capacity than for a leisurely swim. So the way I rationalise it is that Tommy is a city kid that had not much opportunity to learn to swim. Also we all tend to avoid getting in the sea at all costs. So, I can live with Tommy not swimming.

If swimming is introduced, then I think it will change the way we approach some missions.
For example, missions like The Fastest Boat, Naval Engagement, Spilling the Beans, Hit the Courier.

Naval Engagement would be epic if Tommy could swim. Makes it slightly easier, too. Maybe.

This was always the reason I stopped Vice City replays over the years I hope they add it at least in the future.

I feel like the biggest cause of first player deaths in III and VC is just going to be people drowning, since everyone is going to sprint to the water to see if Claude and Tommy can swim.
