The Modding of GTA The Definitive Edition

Guys I'm crazed about what we'll see in the future
The GTA Modding Community was always so loyal, modding these oldschool games up until this very minute

With the new trilogy won't this be a major turn around?
As far as I know the trilogy will be using Unreal Engine 4, an Engine that GTA Modders did not need to worry about in the past.

How do you guys think the GTA Modding Community will adapt to this change?

So we all are excited for the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition coming next month. Though while I am myself looking forward to this, I am quite worried about it. Main reason? Well if the game can be modded. I know it's on Unreal Engine and that can have open doors for new modding experience for veterans who does mod in old-games for years or new to the scene. Though we can't forget the time when T2 and R* are taking down mods just for this version. So my worried stands if this can be able to do so because if not then that's a big shame. That's the reason why the old titles are big in replayability due to these mods.

Hopefully we'll able to find out once this game release on PC soon.

do note that r* launcher is anti-modding and any time it detects a modified file it will force you to redownload it with no other choice. if you're interested in modding the games, i recommend waiting for the steam release.

though i hope someone makes a "mods folder" plugin like gta v so that we can go around rockstar's nonsense and in general keep the original files clean.

really?

i own gtav on the rockstar launcher and i was able to include mods into gtav just fine

but anyway, i'm getting the game for PS5 first and whenever it releases for steam, i will get it there mainly for the modding, i don't really want to own it on the rockstar launcher

I share the same sentiments here. Unreal Engine gives me hope for the moddability to continue thriving for GTA. I'd like to say that T2 might be more relaxed on mods on these games as there is no online component, but there's no telling, but if these games are locked down then this is gonna be the death knell for the GTA modding scene.

....ok maybe too dramatic there but corporate suits gonna be corporate suits.

I will be getting the PlayStation 5 version, and if I hear good news on the modding side, I'll likely get the PC version as well (Steam obviously). Only thing I'd be worried about is time for modding the games plus my main monitor is actually a TV and I'm upgrading to OLED, so my setup won't be real desktop friendly if you catch my drift.

Can't wait to see the upcoming mods (except for the radio musics that's obvious it'll happen) :)

Hopefully someone will develop a mod manager so that we don't have to mod the original files :p

Only thing I'm worried about atm is a UE4 version of SAMP/MTA, since T2 will love to DMCA it.

The games will be cracked in no time i assume. f*ck the launcher. Another company trying to push their sh*t down my throat.

I dont think MTA will make the jump to the new version.

This restriction only happened with the old trilogy games AFAIK. I've asked more people with GTA V on RGL (I own it on Steam) and it's the same thing, even with mods with a ton of files like NaturalVision Evolved, and I've added files to RDR2 PC (I own it on RGL) and it never re-downloaded. It warns you about modded files, but then lets you proceed.

If it’s even possible to mod this game at the end of the day, I would love to see a lot of the “classic” models from GTAO be introduced to the III era games with the lovely new graphics. It would fit so well.

I think one of these 2 things could happen:
Or as you said, if the launcher detects a modified file, it will download it again. Or it works like the Steam version of GTA SA, that the game crashes if it detects that there is any modified file.
But all this will depend on how the games work.

also rockstar or more like take two won't miss out on those extra $$$ they can make thru steam

they just wanna promote their rockstar launcher and bring more people to it, thats why its exclusive on R launcher on PC for a while, but after a while it will come to steam and probably epic games too

hey they even give you a discount code, that you can use on other product if you buy the trilogy on R Launcher, like they want to attract people to make their launcher more popular lol

(Purchase Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition from the Rockstar Store via the web or Rockstar Games Launcher by January 5, 2022 to receive $10 off a product priced at $15 or more (exchange rates apply). Discount expires January 16, 2022. See here for complete details/terms.)

I hope for the modding ability of these games.

First of all - i would replace all these vanilla vehicles with GTA IV/V counterparts. At least they would looks better with UE4 HD graphics.

Damn, how long does it usually take for a game to reach Steam? I don't want to buy it twice but I also don't wanna wait...

It shouldn't be a problem cause unreal engine 4 can be used by modders.

take two wont take down the mods for the remastered games

they did it to the old school ones because they want the fanbase to pursue and meet the new trilogy, therefore moving from old to new

so all should be fine

wow thats so weird... They let you play gta and red dead with modified files that have online modes and play great already instead of games that literally need mods to open the exe :kekw: :kekw:

i never understood why they dont just release it on steam at launch but with a 30% increase in price to balance out their lost revenue from steam? I would gladly pay $104 instead of $80 if it meant that i can get it on steam at launch. But since im super impatient I already pre ordered on RGL

Personally, I don't know any modders for the 3D era titles who have even so much as mentioned the upcoming Unreal Engine remakes as a hotbed for modding potential, let alone voiced an active interest in modding them. Above all else, why would a group of people who at this point are basically the gaming equivalent of beaten housewives ever consider going back to their abusers? Both R* and T2 have willingly drawn their lines in the sand. "Problematic" individuals like us aren't wanted in their idealised neo-fanbase.

All this talk is based on circumstantial assumption that because UE-based titles are typically moddable, these titles will be too. I strongly doubt that. R*, T2, (and I'd imagine GSG as well) would want the latter's work embarrassed and/or exposed as the minimal effort upscale it indeed appears to be on the surface by just letting people switch out the models, textures and other resources willy-nilly. As umpteen YT comment sections that praise the new remakes and sh*t on us can already attest, these will be primarily for people that are either too lazy or unwilling to learn how to mod the originals, despite it never being easier to do so. Pretty much every critique of the original PC versions barring 60 FPS support have long been fixed by the community. And had the RE versions of the 3D titles not been interfered with, we likely would have this fixed by now too. Regardless, imagine your enjoyment of a video game being impacted by something as intangible as the number of pictures you see each second (which your brain can't even process properly in the first place).

The file formats, if they're unencrypted at all (doubtful), will almost certainly be different from the ones we've been familiar with for the best part of 2 decades. We know all the ins and outs of .dffs and .txds and can use stuff like scripting and VehFuncs/PedFuncs to push them to their absolute limits. I strongly doubt any of the vehicle/ped/map modellers I know would be willing to learn an entirely new format/structure for a much smaller, less-enthused player base. There may be some conversion teams setting up shop as middlemen, but their endeavours will largely be unsupported by the original creators. Again, this is assuming that R* will somehow be fair sports for once in their history despite 15 years of evidence to the contrary.

Then we have the multiplayer fanbase. For 15 years they've been going strong with MTA and SA:MP and I see absolutely no reason as to why they'd ever consider switching to a UE-based alternative that will likely be buggy and have less functionality than the clients they have been religiously using and updating for so long. If it isn't broken, you don't fix it. And even if R* tried to take them down, they simply wouldn't be able to. They would soldier on unimpacted and they would have to learn to live with that.

But let's say, for the sake of example, that the "Definitive Edition" trilogy somehow does get a modding scene off the ground.

At best, you're going to see a Minecraft-type situation, where that modding community sits at around a 90/10 split between the Java original and the Bedrock Edition. This is a new community that will fracture from one that has existed for over 20 years. People will not just switch overnight.

In conclusion, it just isn't going to happen. Had R* chose to split from T2, apologised to us from the way they treated the Hot Coffee scandal and everything after that, and not stabbed us in the back more times than Caesar since 2017, I might have a different opinion. But in this instance, I just see it as another Scorpion and the Frog scenario; you'd be foolish to hold them to their word, and you cannot be surprised if they try shutting it down all over again.

This is my assumption. The game will inevitably get cracked, looked over many times, and some random enthusiasts with no real connection to the original community will create their own mods.

Yeah, I own the physical copy of GTA V which uses the Rockstar Launcher, and it can be modded just fine. No messages or anything. It just loads.
