20 Years of Grand Theft Auto III

The Grand Theft Auto III Chain Game is a community based relay game where players work as a team, each taking it in turn to contribute progress towards the goal for each round. In this round we're completing the classic edition of Grand Theft Auto III on PC "from Zero to Hero", starting at the very beginning and playing until we've achieved 100% completion.

We welcome both new and existing players to the game, including those who just want to take the one turn and those who wish to become regulars and participate over several rounds. If you're new, take a look at the "Quick Start Guide" below which will guide you on the basic rules and practices of the game. Once you understand how it works, you're free to jump in and participate, but it's strongly advised you read the full set of rules later on to avoid causing disruption to the progress of the round.

Quick Start Guide

This Quick Start Guide is designed to familiarise you with the rules of the Chain Game so that you can get right into the action and take your first turn!

Take a Turn
Get started by making a post in this thread stating your intention to take a turn if there is no current turn in progress. A simple "I'll take a turn" will be enough, but you're free to be creative as long as your intention is clear.

If you've already taken a turn earlier in the round, you may only take another turn if there has been either two further valid turns completed or an uninterrupted four hour period has passed since the completion of your latest turn.

Download the Save File
Download the save file from the last completed turn post in this thread.

Make Progress
You have three hours to complete your turn, during which you may complete up to one story or payphone mission and as many side missions as you wish.

You are not allowed to get busted, wasted, or fail any mission or side mission that contributes to the "Mission Attempts" statistic. If this happens, you must restart your turn, load a save file made earlier in your turn, or forfeit.

You are also not allowed to use any cheats, scripts, trainers or modifications that change game content or affect the save file.

Turns that do not follow the rules will be invalidated, discarding any progress made.

Find Vehicles (Optional)
To celebrate 20 years since the release of Grand Theft Auto III, the save file used in this round has been modified to spawn 20 new vehicles in Liberty City. These vehicles are included in the minigame “Vehicle Hunt” where players are invited to search for these vehicles in exchange of cookies.

You may search for as many of the 20 vehicles as you wish during your turn. Remember to be considerate and keep in mind that other players may also want to search for vehicles in their turn.

If you think you’ve found a vehicle, make a note of it in your turn post but use spoiler tags to conceal your findings as not to spoil the location of the vehicles to anyone interested in finding them on their own outside of the round.

All information about the starter save used in this round, including how you could receive additional cookies for your finds, is detailed in “The Starter Save” post.

Save and Upload
Complete your turn by saving the game and uploading the save file on GTASnP.com. You may use another upload service if you choose, but it must allow free download access without the need for registration.

Edit Your Post
Edit the post you made to take the turn and describe what you completed. You must include detailed information on any missions and side missions completed, the completion percentage and a link to the save file. All required information can be found in the rules, but includes any time or score achieved and progress towards side mission goals. We recommend using the Posting Format found below or on the GTASnP.com page for your save file.


 

Posting Format

Completed turns must include information on what has been completed during the turn, the current completion percentage, and a download link to the save file. It is recommended that you use the following template in your post, but feel free to be creative and make your post look fancy with cool fonts and colours provided it remains readable:

Mission: Write the name of any mission you completed, such as "Luigi's Girls". We also recommend you note the names of any side missions you complete, such as "Patriot Playground". Please try and use the English mission name where possible to help us out for the lists, even if you play the game in a different language.

Link: Post the URL to where your save file can be downloaded.

Completion: Note the current completion percentage, which can be found in the stats menu or on GTASnP.com.

Notes: Use this field to note where any collectibles you picked up were, the time or score you achieved in a mission, if you raised your health or any other information that may be useful. If you have nothing to note, you may leave this section out.

The rules are designed to ensure that the game remains fair and enjoyable, and should be read through and understood by all players to avoid causing disruption to the progress of the round.
 

General Rules

Game Version
You will need to own the classic edition of Grand Theft Auto III on PC in order to participate.

Respect Rule
All members of our community should be kind, supportive and respectful to each other. Any form of discrimination will not be tolerated.

You should only post in this thread when participating in the round. If you'd like to ask a question, share something from your turn, or chat with members of the community, we invite you to use one of the following platforms:

Taking a Turn

Get started by making a post in this thread stating your intention to take a turn if there is no current turn in progress. A simple "I'll take a turn" will be enough, but you're free to be creative as long as your intention is clear. If multiple players make a post at the same time, the player whose post appears first is the one who takes the turn.

You are not allowed to reserve turns. Do not make a post when another turn is in progress, and do not contact other players asking for them to either take or not take turns in a way that may benefit you.

Wait Rules
If you have already taken a turn in the round, you must wait for one of the following criteria to be met before you take another. Note that forfeited and invalid turns do not count towards the Wait Rules.

Two Turns: You may take a turn after two or more consecutive turns are completed by other players, since the completion of your previous turn.

Four Hours: You may take a turn after a four hour period passes with no turns being taken, at any time since the completion of your previous turn. Make a note in your turn post if this is the case.

Three Hour Time Limit
You have three hours to complete your turn, which is counted from the time you submitted your post until the time you edited in the completed save file.

Forfeiting
You can forfeit your turn by editing your post and mentioning your intention, but this will count as an invalid turn.

 

Downloading the Save File

Download the save file from the last completed turn and place it in the "GTA3 User Files" folder on your system. If you feel that the link to the save file is suspicious, let us know.
 

Making Progress

You have three hours to complete your turn, during which you may complete up to one story or payphone mission and as many side missions as you wish. That's plenty of time to sit back, relax, and have some fun!

Important Information
No Busts or Wastes: You are not allowed to get busted or wasted during your turn.

No Failure: You are not allowed to fail any mission or side mission that contributes to the "Mission Attempts" statistic during your turn.

The only exception is for the collection of special vehicles that require failure, but you must only fail as many times as is necessary.

No Cheats, Scripts or Trainers: You are not allowed to use cheats, scripts or trainers during your turn.

Use of Modifications: We strongly recommend that you use an unmodified installation of the game when participating, but you may use any modifications that do not change game content or affect the save file, such as GInput, SilentPatch and Widescreen Fix.

If you aren't sure whether a modification you want to use changes game content or affects the save file, do not assume and instead ask us first.

On Mission Flag Manipulation: You are not allowed to manipulate the On Mission Flag (commonly referred to as "OM0") in any form during your turn.

The only exception is for the collection of special vehicles that require it, and which do not cause adverse affects on the save file such as adding a permanent radar marker.

The Replay Feature: You are not allowed to use replays during missions, rampages or vehicle activated side missions. It is possible to exploit the game in a way that instantly completes missions and manipulates scores and times.

However, you may use it at any other time as long as it is not exploited in a way that affects the save file, compeletion percentage or any completion requirement.

Missions
The One Mission Rule: You may only complete one story or payphone mission during your turn.

Exceptions to the One Mission Rule: The following missions do not require much effort from the player and so are considered exceptions to the one mission rule. You may complete as many of them as you wish during your turn:

  • "Bomb Da Base: Act I"
  • "Bomb Da Base: Act II" (First Cutscene)
  • "Love's Disappearance"

Mission Scores and Times: You must note the score or time you achieved as written in the stats menu if you completed any of the following missions:

  • "Turismo" - Note the Race Time
  • "Bling-Bling Scramble" - Note how many Checkpoints Collected
  • "Smack Down" - Note how many Yardies Killed
  • "Rigged to Blow" - Note the Bomb Defusal Time

High Priority Missions
Locked Missions: Completing certain missions earlier than intended will result in remaining missions for some contacts to become permanently unavailable. This prevents 100% completion and would therefore prevent us from being able to achieve our goal this round, so the following missions should all be completed before the mission in which they become unavailable.

The following missions must be completed before "Last Requests" before they become unavailable:

  • "Pump-Action Pimp" (Luigi Goterelli)
  • "The Fuzz Ball" (Luigi Goterelli)
  • "Dead Skunk In The Trunk" (Joey Leone)
  • "The Getaway" (Joey Leone)

The following missions must be completed before "Waka-Gashira Wipeout" before they become unavailable:

  • "Kanbu Bust-out" (Kenji Kasen)
  • "Grand Theft Auto" (Kenji Kasen)
  • "Deal Steal" (Kenji Kasen)
  • "Shima" (Kenji Kasen)
  • "Smack Down" (Kenji Kasen)

The following mission must be completed before "Grand Theft Aero" before it becomes unavailable:

  • "Two-Faced Tanner" (Asuka Kasen)

Gang Hostility Missions: After the completion of each of the following missions, a gang will become hostile towards the player. It is recommended that side missions such as "Paramedic" are completed before these missions as the increased hostility will make them more difficult to complete:

  • "The Pick-Up" or "Trial By Fire" - After whichever is completed first, the Liberty City Triads will become hostile.
  • "Sayonara Salvatore" - The Leone Family Mafia will become hostile.
  • "Uzi Rider" - The Diablos will become hostile.
  • "Kingdom Come" - The Yardies will become hostile.

Players should note that the Columbian Cartel are hostile from the beginning, and that the Yakuza, Red Jacks and Purple Nines will never become hostile.

Side Missions
Rampages: You may complete as many rampages as you wish during your turn, but must note the title and location of those completed.

Paramedic, Firefighter, Vigilante and Taxi Driver: You may complete as many of these activities as you wish during your turn, but must note how much of the requirement you completed and, for "Firefighter" and "Vigilante", the island you completed them on.

Paramedic must not be completed to Level 12 more than once due to a bug that causes additional percentage to be awarded. If Paramedic has already been completed, you may only re-attempt it to a maximum of Level 11.

Off Road Challenges and TOYZ Missions: You may complete as many "Off Road Challenges" and "TOYZ Missions" as you wish during your turn:

Off Road Challenges

  • "Patriot Playground"
  • "Multistorey Mayhem"
  • "A Ride In The Park"
  • "Gripped!"

TOYZ Missions

  • "Diablo Destruction"
  • "Mafia Massacre"
  • "Casino Calamity"
  • "Rumpo Rampage"

You must note down the time or score achieved when completing these missions, and if re-completing, should avoid saving after failed attempts to beat the record.

Hidden Packages and Unique Jumps: You may complete as many Hidden Package collections or Unique Jumps as you wish during your turn, but must note the location of those completed.

Import/Export: You may deliver as many vehicles to Import/Export garages and the Emergency Vehicle Crane as you wish during your turn, but must note which vehicles you delivered.

Securicar Cracker Garage: You may deliver as many Securicars to the "Cracker Garage" in Portland Harbor as you wish during your turn, though this is not required for 100% completion.

Gameplay Methods
The Chain Game is designed to be open and allow players to choose their own mission strategies, and pursue additional fun activities such as purchasing weapons, respraying vehicles, installing car bombs or spending some time with the women of Liberty City. You may wish to note in your turn post if you completed any of these activities.

 

Save and Upload

Complete your turn by saving the game at a safehouse. You should save on an unlocked island and one where missions are available, and you should consider filling up on Health and Armor before posting your turn for the convenience of the next player.

After saving, upload the save file on GTASnP.com. You may use another upload service if you choose, but it must allow free download access without the need for registration.

 

Edit Your Post

Edit the post you made to take the turn and describe what you completed. You must include detailed information on any missions and side missions completed, the completion percentage and a link to the save file. All required information can be found in the rules, but includes any time or score achieved and progress towards side mission goals. We recommend using the Posting Format found earlier in the posts or on the GTASnP.com page for your save file.

Late Edit: If you wish to edit a completed turn post to add more information, you must specify the time of the original edit and your time zone so it can be proven the turn was completed within the time limit.

 

Violation of The Rules

Any turn that does not follow the rules will be invalidated, discarding any progress made, and players repeatedly violating the rules may receive a temporary or permanent suspension from all aspects of the Chain Game. You can help ensure the game runs smoothly by letting us know if you spot a rule violation.

Celebrating 20 Years

On 22nd October 2001, the gaming landscape was changed forever with the release of Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto III.

A major step forward for the series, introducing a 3D environment, a detailed story on a criminal’s quest for revenge, and an arsenal of vehicles and weapons, Grand Theft Auto III had a major influence on open world gaming and introduced many of the concepts and gameplay elements that we still enjoy today.

It has been a constant in my life over the years. Introduced to it when I was young, I grew up exploring the streets of Liberty City and creating memories that I cherish to this day. It ultimately led me to GTAForums where I have since joined communities focused on the series and met incredible people that I would have otherwise never had the chance to meet. Many of those people are the ones reading this right now.

Arsen Vitiuk created the Chain Game in 2010 as a simple concept, to enjoy completing the game with other people that share the same interest, but it has since become so much more than that. In 11 years we’ve had over 100 people participate in the rounds, contribute to the game, join in with special celebrations, and together have created memories that we can all look back on and enjoy. I’ve made many great friends through the Chain Game, as I know many of us have, and this was all possible because Grand Theft Auto III brought us together.

Now we celebrate 20 great years with a round featuring 20 Generated Vehicles, and look forward to the future where we will continue to enjoy this classic, meet new friends along the way, and create new memories for many years to come.

Generated Vehicles

To celebrate 20 years of Grand Theft Auto III, the save file used in this round has been modified to spawn 20 new vehicles in Liberty City and may include vehicles required for Import/Export, vehicles on islands they would usually not spawn on, and vehicles placed just for fun! 9 vehicles replace original game spawns, including 1 vehicle that usually fails to spawn due to error, and the remaining 11 vehicles are added spawns.

Each member of the Chain Game Staff created a save file with 4 vehicles of their choice: 1 regular vehicle on each island and 1 personal vehicle. Arsen Vitiuk, the Grand Theft Auto III Chain Game Founder, was also invited to decide 3 regular vehicles and 1 personal vehicle as a mark of respect for his work in the creation of this game which we all continue to enjoy.

thehambone was responsible for merging the 5 save files into a single save file using a tool he wrote, resulting in a situation where there is no person who knows all locations of the vehicles in this round, meaning that everyone will be able to participate in Vehicle Hunt for the vehicles that they did not choose.

The following is a summary of the vehicles included in the save file:

  • Added 5 Personal Vehicles – 1 for each member of the Chain Game Staff and 1 for the Chain Game Founder. These will be alarmed!
  • Added 5 Vehicles on Portland!
  • Added 5 Vehicles on Staunton Island!
  • Added 5 Vehicles on Shoreside Vale!

All 20 vehicles will be included in the classic minigame “Vehicle Hunt”. Their locations will remain “classified” at the start of the round and it is up to the players to find them, with 1 cookie being awarded for every find. It is also possible to be awarded additional cookies: 1 for correctly identifying if a vehicle spawns in a permanent colour and naming that colour, 1 for identifying if a vehicle is a personal vehicle, and 1 for correctly guessing the owner of an assumed personal vehicle.

You may search for as many vehicles as you wish during your turn, but we ask that you are considerate and give everyone a chance to find vehicles. If you find a vehicle, mention it in your turn notes under a “Generated Vehicles” heading but use spoiler tags to conceal your findings as not to spoil the location of the vehicles to anyone interested in finding them on their own outside of the round.

You are not allowed to cheat by using tools, trainers or any other method to locate vehicles. Players caught cheating or assisting another player in cheating will be permanently excluded from all future rounds with modified saves and may face an additional suspension from participation in the Chain Game.

The following people were responsible for vehicles placed in this save file:

  • GTAKid667 was responsible for the locations of 3 regular vehicles, their personal vehicle, and for placing Arsen Vitiuk’s 3 regular vehicle choices and Arsen Vitiuk’s personal vehicle.
  • Parik, SorveteQuente, thehambone and Arsen Vitiuk were responsible for the locations of 3 regular vehicles each and their personal vehicles.

None of these people are allowed to participate in Vehicle Hunt for the vehicles they placed or use their vehicles for beneficial purposes such as delivering them to Import/Export Garages until they have been found by another player in the round.
