That is factually not true. In 2001/2002, you did have many games that looked much more realistic and pushed much better graphics than Vice City. That does not mean the game is not a masterpiece, but it is pretty obvious that Rockstar was pushing for a more stylized, cartoony game compared to much more realistic and better looking titles such as Max Payne and Mafia.

In fact, I would argue that the stylish, parody-chasing, over the top graphics and animations of Vice City helped the game sell the also crazy 80's vibe and stand out.

This idea that Vice City was somehow chasing realism, where characters did not have proper fingers and moved like robots, is pretty insane. Just a Google search away. Enough with this hardware limitation excuse.

Well, that's a stretch. VC looks more vibrant and slightly stylized because it doesn't rely on photo textures as much as those other games. Your other arguments are even worse. Tommy not having separate fingers and animations not being all that realistic just proves that Rockstar had to compromise and work around technical limitations. Have you ever played MP1? Animations in this game are just as janky and funny looking as those in VC. There's also this one little detail. Mafia and MP were primarily developed with PC in mind so the devs had a lot more power to work with. The Getaway had to work around the same limitations as VC, but it went a different path and ended up aging the worst. VC is not any more stylized than GTA V is and definitely not to the extent we see in the GSG's interpretation

Even if a game aims to have realistic graphics, it's still cool when the developers makes interesting design choices to make the game feel unique, the best example of this obviously is RDR2, even though it has realistic graphics, its lighting system obviously is a little exaggerated, at least I never been on a place in real life where the lighting is as strong as it is in this game, but it makes the game look so good, it makes the world feel more mystery you know, I really hope Rockstar keeps this lighting style in their future games, improving upon it of course, at least in the games set in a older time period such as RDR2, where we don't have to worry about crashing vehicles at high speeds due to low visibility or something. Just take a look at this video:

100%!

R* is very conscious of (and careful with!) intentional exaggerations/understatements when it comes to "realism".

Their games were never "photo realistic" or "cartoony", limitations were/are taken into consideration when designing things like maps or weather.

Randomly increasing draw distance because "it's 2021, guys", isn't something you'd see in a game developed by R*... they know their sh*t.

Max Payne always had more realistic shapes and features compared to GTA. MP3 for example has many interesting realistic things which aren't exactly there in GTAV even tho MP3 came out in 2012 before GTAV.
Worth mentioning the two series have different scopes, things that are in MP don't have a reason to be in GTA because they have different styles, etc.

True, RDR2 has a incredible draw distance because it also fits with the game's world, but that's not the case with GTA San Andreas, it makes the game's world feel small, as it actually is, but it don't have to be this obvious.

I mean if we're taking the standards of realism down to identical assets, GTA is a fantasy game since none of its cars or cities and thus many landmarks, shapes, clothes and other stuff don't exactly exist in reality.

Yeah, that leaked list seems far fetched. It's pretty much all the best tracks.

The trilogy apps on steamdb have gotten non-global updates on 3 consecutive days now.

Maybe we'll get a steam release sooner? 😛

I noticed that Rocksar Games became kinda soft in recent time, they are not what they used to be before. Old GTA games made fun of everything and everyone, R* was a company that didn't give a f*ck about opinions of critics, they were focused on making games that turned out to be masterpieces, even 15-20 years later there's still a LOT of people playing them. Nowdays, they seem kinda more focused on making money the easiest way possible (shark-cards) and censorship of older titles suggest their approach changed, it also doesn't help that Dan Houser and Lazlow Jones left, considering they worked on almost all GTA games.

Exactly, it's strange how they once made fun of Mark Zuckerberg in a GTA 5 mission now they are working with him for San Andreas for VR.

Rockstar was planning on giving the trilogy away for free when purchasing GTA 5 E&E edition. So now they are going to make millions selling the trilogy.

Why didn't they invest millions in getting the licenses for the music back, then make millions of the game & call it even.

They weren't planning on selling it in the first place. If they really love the fans, or have love for the fans, they would do this.

But in this day and age we, the consumer, are nothing more then cash cows.

Rockstar lost it's soul.

No I'm not talking about real life represented in video games. I'm talking about technologies in the game that increase realism by a touch. First thing that comes to my mind is Max's tie that hangs and moves in the space instead of being stucked to his chest.

It's not strange at all. Quest 2 is the most popular VR so it's a no brainer decision for Rockstar and T2 business wise. They have an official Facebook account for a long time and they even partnered for some promotions. No hard feelings when there's money to be made. Just like many anti-capitalist films were produced by capitalist companies, this is the same sh*t.

And the mission was in GTAV, not IV.

Oh... I get it. You mean like how glass shattering in III didn't have just a generic animation and reacted to where you had shot it?

Or like how newspapers in all three games, Tommy's shirt on bikes in high speed, and planes in San Andreas reacted to wind properly?
Or like how CJ's animations and interactions with the environment were altered by his weight, the price of the car he was driving, and his clothes and overall appearance?

I must be missing something. (I agree that they weren't pinnacles of realism but they weren't devoid of the kind of details you mentioned.)

it's Strange that T2 a year ago stated that Rockstar wasn't really into the VR market after doing LA Noire.
I guess the Zucc dumped a truck load of money off at their company and opinions changed fast.

Same CEO of T2 said Rockstar wouldn't just do a lazy remaster either of their game........

raw

Oh come on. You know that Max Payne is a linear experience and Mafia look this good only on PC (and was primarily a PC game) and VC was launched first on weak PS2 had open world and lot more features to do than the other two games.

On the topic of characters, you can't tell me they were going for a totally realistic look and not a stylized aesthetic with characters that look like this:

Do you think we will get those animations? I hoped for, but I think they'll keep the games pretty stock in that regard.

gta 4? In gta 5 there's a whole mission where you blow up his head off with a cellphone lol

But man... the way they announced it? probably the worst marketing I could possibly imagine.

Sure, but "stylized aesthetic" is not the same thing as saying "oh those games were always cartoony so its fine that they look like bootleg fortnite characters now", thats the dumbest argument I seen in here. It makes no sense at all.

"Cartoony" can mean manny different things. Imagine if those games were actually cartoons and they looked like this:
images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQdIS6ZBRY_Msz8WblTaK1
3255.jpg

Theres a clear consistent artstyle, right?

But now you randomly replace some characters and now they look... well, like this:
wreck-it-ralph-brak-polskiej-wersji-jezy

You can't argue that those two cartoony art styles are identical and they match each other like a glove...

edit: Another example? GTA art style kinda reminds me The Man In Black Cartoon. A lot of sharp angles, but they still look human:
men-in-black-the-series-2.jpg?fit=570,40

But those new characters? They look like they are straight out of The Simpsons or Bobs Burgers. Matching those two different art styles is simply jarring. I think thats the main reason why people don't like those new models.
