On the official Rockstar website, under 'game details' > 'developer', it says

'Developer: Rockstar Games, adapted by Grove Street Games'

The Russian PS Store page explicitly says "games created by Rockstar Games, ported by Grove Street Games".

" Originally developed by Rockstar Games, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition has been adapted to modern platforms by Grove Street Games using Unreal Engine to make these classics more vibrant and more immersive than ever, celebrating the legacy of the series that redefined interactive entertainment and helped propel video games to the center of culture."

I'm not actually sure which is worse, that company making it by themselves or in collaboration with the original creators.

Yep, most likely that GSG is the only one developer behind DE.

But the question still remains, why R* Dundee was mentioned a lot in all previous leaks, and if they didn't work at DE Trilogy, then what would they do? GTA V E&E? But R* acquired Dundee in 2020, and they started working with R* probably even earlier, in 2019 as Ruffian Games. I mean, probably Dundee can't be working on E&E for like 2 years, especially considering the fact how disastrous it went. But maybe they just assist main R* studios with GTA Online DLC's, or even they have totally different projects, like other R* game remasters\remakes, heck. They can even work on continuation of some older Rockstar's IP's, like Midnight Club, Bully, Manhunt (Though that extremely unlikely).

To be honest, in this DE shot most buildings textures look mostly the same for me, just some minor improvements,

Yeah, pretty much the same for me. This isn't a dig on the 3D Era games, on GTA as a franchise, or the PS2, but the new screenshots still look PS2'ish to me, only clearer. The thing is that the buildings and sructures look mostly the same to me, with a lttle more color vibrancy. But the thing I notice in all the screenshots, particularly III, is that all the main structures, like buildings an skyscrapers, have that Old West cardboard look to me. Flat and 2-dimensional. Not that there's anything wrong with this. These games have always looked like that. They are still a riot of fun and I love them. But if I were going to re-purchase these at launch, for full price, I wanted more visually. As it is now, the Trilogy games are still lots of fun in the PC versions I already have. So no need to upgrade" for me.

@TheLandstalker I would really not know that fam, nor am I being even remotely inclined to find out, truth to be told. I was just stating the obvious.

I've noticed some buildings have been remodeled, others not so much, so it's likely these shots were taken at different point in development.

Tbh, I'm OK with the textures looking like the original PS2 ones but in HD. Better than using entirely new textures which are just going to ruin the feel of the game.

Me thinking about Rockstar Dundee, if it's Grove Street Games that made these games:

if they had no impact on this, they're likely merged into the big kid team working on gta 6 (or maybe a new IP?)

i'm willing to bet they provided some of their UE4 experience to GSG though, even if not as lead developers.

To each his own. To be quite honest, I was really hoping that Rockstar was going to offer something more like what the modders did with all the insane map mods. For me to make the purchase at full price, and support this newest Trilogy port, that's what I was really looking for. It wouldn't ruin it at all for me to see these games done with maps and characters and scenery that was very much modern, but with the same map, only transformed into looking like it was an HD Era game. Again, nothing wrong with them going this route. But for me to give Take2 the same cash for a full priced, modern game, I was looking for a lot more from Rockstar.

honestly it sounds to me like you'd be better served waiting for gta 6. to go this far would be giving us 80% of that product without any of the new gameplay features or stories. i think, for what this is (a small nostalgia project and 3 games in one) it's fairly priced and the content is up to snuff

Still hoping that Kotaku article is right and Rockstar is considering RDR1 remaster, which would have to be done by a Rockstar studio (since its on RAGE engine) and not an external one... and Dundee would be a good choice for that.

Tbh, it would be a waste if they got merged into GTA 6 team, they could work as a remaster studio.

I don't think so, they probably work on GTA V E&E or bringing RDR (2010) story to RDRII (dream).

buying an entire studio to work on that seems more than a little wasteful - the changes in the trailer amount to colored license plates so i'm not so sure.

good point about a potential RDR port, though

this has been said more than a few times here but their GTA 3 and VC ports were quite good and faithful to the originals. SA was the only one that fell short, and that could've been due to an issue on R*'s end (ie. not giving enough time)

i'm happy to give them a chance, and what they've shown so far looks promising.

Damn straight. Let's hope the definitive edition clears up their reputation regarding the San Andreas port.

Please do, you are entitled to do whatever pleases you. I'm not here to tell anyone how they should feel about it, nor to complain about it. I was just stating the obvious. In my eyes and in regards to this particular question, I just cannot fathom how can anyone else even be allowed to approach these classics, let alone work on them, except for their original creators and their original creators alone.

Tbh, I do kinda wish there were some map alterations.

Like reworking Mainland Vice, or adding an Upstate area to GTA 3.

Yeah, the attitudes towards GSG on here is a bit toxic. I assume R* have given them far more resources here.

Remember Hangar 13 was in the same boat a year ago and they hit it out of the park with Mafia.

Not sure I agree with all of that. I still play GTA III, VC, and SA on he PC. I also love GTA V and am addicted to GTAO. I wasn't looking for a brand new Trilogy. I am fine continuing to play the Trilogy I have on PC. I just don't see this as an "upgrade" worthy of the price. But neither was I expecting this to be a GTA V caliber remake. I would have loved to see these three games done looking like the map mods I have seen, only with the same characters, stories, voices, etc., as the original Trilogy games. No need to wait for GTA VI for me. GTAO is still going massively strong as far as I'm concerned, and I still have The Trilogy to play when I get a hankering.

We'll see if a fancy animation of Rockstar Dundee's logo greets us as we enter the game...

How does that work? You get bought by Rockstar, become an internal studio and suddenly you're an expert at RAGE? :D

External studios don't work on RAGE projects. I assume Dundee has a bit of experience with RAGE already, since they are likely helping out with E&E for some time, but who knows.

Sure, they are likely working as a support studio making content for GTA Online and Red Dead Online or something like that, I just don't know how that would make them a "good choice" for anything.

Why do I have the feeling that Vadim M is already preparing the "Why the Definitive Edition is Garbage" video ...

bear in mind that this is all still pre-release footage as well, and we haven't seen a lick of gameplay. the gameplay is way more important than any possible animation or material flubs there could be
