GTA San Andreas Stories is now possible!

Liberty City... Stories

Vice City... Stories

Then they stopped.

Clearly because it was 2007, nobody was going to care about an old gen GTA for PSP and PS2 and R* was extremely busy with GTA IV.

Many years later...

The "unthinkable" (actually not, I knew it was going to happen sooner or later) happened:
- R* has not released a GTA for 8 years and not announced one in 10.
- R* has RE-MADE 3 full GTA Games in a modern, industry leading, engine: Unreal Engine, and is selling all of them in a bundle.

This was possible thanks to the acquisition of Ruffian Games, a Scottish Studio known to have worked on open worlds games on both Renderware (GTA Trilogy original engine) and Unreal Engine.

If this collection is going to sell a sh*tload of copies (it may be if it's done well) do you think R* is going to capitalize further on the nostalgia and release a new 3D era title?

Think about it:

  • They have the tech
  • The tech is industry leading and allows them to work much faster than before (they re did 3 games in a couple of years)
  • The 3D era games were already faster to make: R* has released 5 GTA in 6 years, now it's 1 in 13 years!
  • 3D era games were also extremely cheaper
  • Retro games sells extremely well (Crash Bandicoot and more...)
  • People are starving for more GTA, at least those who don't care for GTA Online.
  • People would love to return to the 3D era characters and maybe have some closure on their stories (What happened to Donald Love? Is Tommy alive?)

The way I see it is like this:

If the Definiteve Editions looks good enough and sells very well (5 million units in 1 years) then San Andreas Stories may be greenlit for release in 2024, the 20th Anniversary of GTA San Andreas release and may also be bundled with the Definitive Edition of the other two stories games.

Think about it:

GTA San Andreas was developed in 2 years by 100 people or so.

Now R* has over 4000 employees and takes a decade to develop a new GTA.

2 years of development for a retro game with better tools and in a satellite studio, are peanuts to R* and they may realistically expect to sell > 5 million units with this project. Easy money.

As far as I know the reason why GTA SA Stories was never a thing was because of the Introduction video that covered the whole premise of the game in the same way the storylines of LCS and VCS cover III and VC respectively.

Companies don't make games to add some background to a plot, they make them to make money and there is nothing forcing R* to make only prequels.

I will bet all my virtual GTA V money that San Andreas Stories, along with VCS and LCS will be a thing added tot the definitive editions as DLC before 2030.

I don't know if they will return to the 3D era (remasters notwithstanding) but if they do then I'd like them to try a new setting altogether rather than have their return to that universe be a prequel/sequel of another game. I'd be more excited for a fresh experience.

Personally though I don't see them expanding the 3D universe apart from remasters though would be cool if they did.

Eh, might be an unpopular opinion but I don't want to revisit 3D era games ever again. Don't get me wrong, I love these games dearly and they gave me some of my best gaming memories ever, but these games are a product of their time and revisiting 3D era in a new retro style game would feel strange now. I feel like 3D era has wrapped up nicely, and I don't personally feel the need to revisit it. I like the fact that some questions in regards to the fate of certain characters remained unanswered.

it could be nice if they did it. i always felt like there was more potential for a lot of the characters. and i love the map. but i doubt it. i dont see them doing any new games to the 3d universe. and it would probably be pretty hard to get a lot of the actors back. even carls actor had beef with rockstar. so it would not be the same.

San Andreas Stories is worth being part of a new Standalone Trilogy but like every other game, they will be sold separately.

It doesn't make much sense to introduce a new setting in a "legacy" series, if the do a GTA SAS it's going to be the last chapter of the 3D era.

Maybe the will introduce some extension, like San Diego equivalent.

We have also to consider that they have plans for GTA VI and the two must be very different.

Let's wait for the first trailer of the remakes, the feasibility of GTA SAS is based on how it's going to look and feel (and its sales of course)

Experience has taught me that a voice actor can be very willing to come back for the right price.

Plus it's not the first time a character is being voiced by different people and that's not a big deal if we consider different times. What about CJ in his 40s?

Moving back to 3d era is a step back

The maps were less accurate vompared to the hd era's maps

There were several graphics and game play issues that were acceptable those days because of hardware limitation

In total everything except remaster and remake from 3d era is a total failure

This is high on my wishlist, providing the Trilogy itself turns out well.

I would absolutely love to have more of SA's world explored through an expansion/DLC/standalone 'Stories' entry - it is from a golden era of gaming where RenderWare reigned supreme across platforms and genres, and the last generation before DLC and Multiplayer became staple in many AAA console releases.

That's a strong point both for and against the idea - getting involved around the events that lead into that movie would be something I'd adore as the structure for the game. As you say though, it does fill in quite a lot in the Intro movie; but there could still be a clever way to write in a character we see in SA as a protagonist for a Stories entry, showing their interactions with some of the events prior to the Intro. Wishful thinking, but a part of me will always want to believe they started making a SAS story in some form and have it kicking around ready to be used one day! 🙃

CJ saves a young guy from the Ballas, then is murdered with a dildo by the same guy.

Turns out he is the son of a random pedestrian you have definitely killed in your original playthrough and he wants revenge.

What do you think about this plot?

Sounds very smart and mature, probably going to win multiple awards.

Haha, a very appropriate mission concept for SA; could be one of many potential stories - the USP of that being you play in two time periods - before and after SA's events, and see Carl as a helpful young gangbanger, and then as the don he is at the end of SA. I still wonder what happened to CJ and the crew beyond the credits.

I think SA was the most fully realised game of the trilogy, and it would take some cunning game design to breathe fresh life into something new in the old SA map. There's so, so much already there, creating new experiences that improve on SA, like LCS and VCS did on III and VC, would be quite the achievement, and I would love to see it done.

Would be cool to see San Andreas Stories with an early 00s setting.

Maybe. Perhaps if these sell well.

The only problem is getting voice actors since a lot of them didn't part on good terms, so it would need a lot of new characters. Also, I'm not sure what it would actually be about. Somehow I feel like San Andreas Stories could actually be set after SA. Heck, if it was set after III, they could perhaps answer a lot of questions.

But realistically, I don't see it happening. If this trilogy sells well, they may decide to do LCS and VCS. If that sells well, perhaps they'll get a third party studio to make another 3D era title.

with what we have seen today and the game in the hands of the people, behind sa remastered on mobile and console I think we can forget about it.

R* doesn’t care, it’s a miracle they have green lit this edition but it’s clear they didn’t want to invest on it

There is when you take into account these returning characters have expired contracts with Rockstar or just tore them up. CJ would not be voiced by Maylay and that means a massive drop in profit, Ryder's voice actor left halfway through recording, Maccer's voice actor is absolutely f*cked from the many years of drug abuse and doing gigs for Happy Mondays, plus some voice actors have since died. Call me a fanboy but unless it's pulled off really well, I'm not interested in hearing CJ with a different tone.

VCS being the lowest selling of the "3D era" games probably didn't help matters.

Plus there would always have been the difficulty of cramming SA into a 1.8 GB PSP disk and still making it look good.

I don't buy the whole "introduction" theory though. That feels borderline nonsensical. There's so much more you could do with a full game compared to a measly 20 minute video.

Yeah sure, massive drop of profits because he's not voiced by Maylay lmao.

People boycotted BF5 because of the women and bionic legs, the GTA fanbase would do a lot worse for a lot less.

A Stories remaster separate from the Trilogy remaster would be interesting. I never got around to finishing Liberty City Stories or getting into Vice City Stories at all. Hoping this is their next project before GTA 6 and whatever else R* has going on.
