GTA III: The Definitive Edition - OUT NOW

Recommended Posts

Thought I'd pop in with my experience so far on PS5. I've completed Paramedic, 20 levels of Firefighter and Vigilante and used the wall breach in the Hepburn highrises next to Claude's place to get to Staunton and Shoreside. I'm gonna go after the hidden packages and do some taxi today before getting back to the story missions. It's pretty alright so far. Visually it's fantastic. The draw distance is so much better. Looking forward to tackling the new achievements. Paramedic was slightly easier due to the new map. Couple nitpicks though. Vehicle engines don't have separate models like the Xbox/10th Anniversary ports and just seem to be flat textures with raised bumps. There's a lot of clipping, especially at the Portland hideout. The controls also take some getting used to; I don't like how the drive-by controls are mapped on the modern control scheme. A lot of the trees around Portland that used to be able to driven through are now completely solid :( The weapon wheel seems a bit tacked-on as well as the radio wheel, but they do slow down time when you enter them so you can have a bit more reaction time. I've had the game crash once when I was free-roaming so I'm hoping a patch comes out soon to fix that. I put the game on performance mode and there was still a lot of slowdown, especially in areas with high traffic. I think it needs some more optimization work but I ain't holding my breath. I'm hoping special vehicles are still just as easy to obtain; so far I've scored the teal Kuruma and put her in Shoreside's hideout. Not looking forward to getting the Cheetah from Turismo. One last thing, IDK if the old damageproofing method with the crusher in Harwood will work anymore, because the Taxi mission automatically starts/ends as soon as you click R3.

EDIT: One last thing; the Dodo is still the same odd little bird we know and love. Literally the only thing that got added is the port/starboard lights on the clipped wings. Also, it seemed harder to take off because I kept hitting something as I was pointing the nose down to take off?

Hi everybody.

Anyone know whether it's possible to transfer and utilize the original PS2 game saves from GTAIII, Vice City and SA on PS5?  I'd like to play these, but i don't want to spend weeks/months looking for all the bonus items all over again.

Unfortunately not; they're separate versions of the game so the save files won't port over. I had a 100% on the old PS4/PS2 version and I haven't seen any option to transfer that over.

A nice little touch I've noticed after a stunt jump went a bit unfortunate is that at least in some instances Claude can catch fire from a vehicle that is on fire 👀

Fairly annoyed right now. The game launched at 2am where I am and RGL was offline by the time I woke up to download it. Feels like I'm wasting my day off.

Yup, they must be treating it as pretty severe if it's still down. No updates yet either. A shame for PC players considering there was no pre-load also.

Wow, I just tried GTA 3 DE and... wow, I didn't expect it to be this bad. This is just horrible, sure, the screenshots weren't great and I was afraid of bugs too but screenshots and videos can't really describe how badly they f*cked up the feel of the gameplay and the controls. I'm shocked, I haven't felt like this since the day I refunded WarCraft 3 Reforged after just 30 minutes of playing it.

The performance is terrible (PC), the game is stuttering like crazy, they seemingly optimized nothing when it comes to Unreal Engine 4's tricky asset streaming system so the game stutters like crazy even when running on an SSD. Locking the framerate to 30 helps but not by much. I don't know how the driving model was altered but the cars kinda have no weight to them, their handling is certainly easier than it was in the original game but that results in this weird feeling like they are detached from the game world or something, it's hard to describe better. The aiming is terrible, the sensitivity is weird and it feels input laggy and overly sensitive on any setting (Xbox Series X controller) to the point where without auto aim this is just non functional. Remember that mod that adds modern controller support to the original PC ports? That handled 100 times better. And even the basic controls suck, for example there is a delay in Claude's sprinting, the game just doesn't feel very responsive in general.

Graphics? A weirdly dark image with overly bright lighting effects and those two things clash hard here, aesthetitically I can only describe it as "jank", like it feels like you're playing some Russian graphics mod that has stolen assets from 10 different games. The thing just doesn't gel together well and fails at giving you a consistent art style. Tried messing with the brightness and contrast settings and you can certainly use those to combat some of it but not to much success.

Overall I feel violated by this. :D It might have been a bad idea to jump into this game right after finishing Liberty City Stories but dear God I never want to see this version of GTA 3 again.

For anyone playing on PC and having massive FPS drops at night time (in my case from 60+ to 30) - turn the "Vehicle Light Quality" down to low. This single setting alone made my game running at 60 fps during night.

Works fine for me. What are your specs? I have Vehicle Light Quality at max to ensure good ambient lighting in night times. I used it to click good night shots during "Guve Me Liberty" mission.

GTX 1060, i5 10400f. Yeah, it does look good, but not worth it in my case - fps drops are really huge.

I'm using i5 10400F myself with RX 570. Just check your GeForce settings just incase. Are you also running on dual channel ram memory? I'm using a 8+8 config. It makes huge difference.

Sure, i'm having 8x2 too. Other than that setting, all three games run flawlessly for me. Also, apparently, i'm not the only one having issues with this setting, as this guy here in the video description is stating the same thing:

Why does the rain look so white? I play in a dark room and it feels like my monitor is flickering and it doesn't look like rain

Rain looks really botched in all 3 games as far as I have seen. Water is also always overlayed rain, it look gods awful.

Was playing some of this last night. The rain is shocking. I tried to do turismo and it was raining, i could not see a single thing the screen was a mess. Restarting just warps you to that time point as well. So i had to blow myself up then do it on a sunny day and had no issue.

Also is it just me or does the GPS only decide to show you directions when it feels like it? Sometimes I get the white line, then some missions even if i put my own marker it wont tell me where to go.

Yep, also the rain drop pattern looks so uniform as if it was a chess board or one of those old website background patterns. :D

Like this is how the f*cking rain looks like on the ground:

blackwhite_pattern_a_198x598_300dpi,qnuM

It's the laziest, trashiest f*cking sh*t I've ever seen in a high profile release, some of the stuff they have belong in one of those lazy asset flips you can find on Steam.

On top of that there are even these fairly basic issues like how rain renders behind the water in the distance here:

M6dR53v.png

Like the f*ck is happening here? They don't even know how to render a scene properly. Every single person that worked on this should be fired because a lot of what's on offer here seems like a display of actual incompetence and that is a very rare sight to see in a release like this.

Edit: Just saw this, really glad I'm not the only person shocked out of his mind by the lack of quality here:

So I've been waiting to reply here. I've been playing GTA 3 for about 6 hours now and gotta say I'm having a good time with it. It plays exactly how my mind remembers it when it first came out. Graphics looked good to me then... 20 years later they look pretty good now. My only complaints so far are that it rains a LOT and it's pretty hard to see through it most of the time and that the audio is the original low quality from 2001. You would think they had a higher quality version recorded that they could use but oh well. The game is still very playable to me but then again I still fire up the original 2001 version from time to time.  🤣

Man, it's like you find something weird on every corner. Remember this?

OCClSdk.jpg

It's that fun "Badfellas" poster from the original game which is not only an obvious spoof at Goodfellas but it's also a nice in universe easter egg because some of those are Leone family character models. It's just an AI upscale in the remaster, nope, they couldn't remake this one even though they redesigned all the characters so new players obviously won't get half the joke now. And really even if it wasn't for that it's just a jpeg of a bunch of blocky PS2 models where the game has none of those in it so why leave this in?

Audio Quality is a huge bummer. Everything else is eye candy expecially the environment. Even with less gritty conditions, it doesn't look bad TBH. I like how lighted and beautiful the city looks. The game runs really stable for me. Really happy about it. I've played for 3 odd hours now. Mostly to run around the city and check on stuff. Agreed on the rain. The textures need work and the frequency needs to be adjusted.

Might be a stupid question, but does playing the game on offline mode prevent obtaining achievements?

Because even though the launcher seems to be down I can apparently still play the game and Social Club is working so I don't really know. Don't want to miss an achievement, and I was about to do that Mike Lips mission.

Just to emphasize the point of inconsistency. Vice City has some nicely remade 3D car engines, they look a bit weird but overall it's a cool addition.

In the case of GTA 3 however it seems like they upscaled the original texture, added some parallax occlusion mapping to it and called it a day:

Looks strange and ugly. And don't even get me started on how the Mafia Sentinel looks like the Xbox model now even though the game was supposed to go for PS2 nostalgia.

More like the PS2 model with Xbox textures put on in a half-assed manner.

They really should've used the enhanced car models from the Xbox version.

Even after all these years Rockstar is still stubborn to use those HQ Xbox assets on PC versions. Quite the shameful thing to do. I wonder if someone will re-do the Xbox assets for the PC versions.
