Really? Thats hard to believe for me haha, isnt San Andreas alone bigger than GTA V?

Why Rockstar didn't remake GTA III and VC considering that T2 did remake Mafia and it release was 2 months before GTA VC and almost 1 year after GTA 3

no. v's map dwarfs the original san andreas.

San Andreas does a really good job of masking it's small size with the fog, draw distance etc. Once you get rid of that, you would see how tiny the game map actually is.

I think the reason is very simple. Money. Money and time. Mafia is a completely different game, smaller, set in an open city, but with a closed story-driven gameplay structure. Grand Theft Auto, on the other hand, is a big sandbox filled with extra content. It takes a lot of work. Too much considering that Rockstar is cooking VI in the meantime.

GTA San Andreas's map is only half the size of GTA V's map

A very controversial PlayStation game.

True, it's magical what Rockstar pulled off on PS2. Smokes & mirrors :p

It feels bigger with fog, but I'd still play if it had "infinite" draw distance. In fact I did some playthroughs with mods like that. It didn't look as bad as it did on youtube because I used many supporting mods for better tree draw distance and vegetation stuff. Also better night lights and it was a great experience to play like that. I don't get why people say it would ruin the experience to see everything.

no its smaller, but it feels bigger because of how the map is structed, draw distance fog etc

GTA SA still has the best gta map though imo

It's very much likely these three games will share the same animations, generic textures and effects, ambient sounds and other assets in a way that maintains a parity between the look and feel of them, which in term reduces the file size.

Now GTAV itself was 60GB game when it came out on PC back in 2015 and did contain a handful of online DLC packs, notably Heists, so let's say the SP portion of GTAV takes 50-55GB space on PC. And if I am not wrong the maps of GTA3, VC and SA combined are smaller than GTAV's map. So assuming they'll keep the scale of the maps same (which they will) around 40GB for 3 of them isn't unreasonable at all if they are trying to reach something close to GTAV visually.

At the end of the day this is an arbitrary comparison since they're using different engines and compression techniques has evolved in last 5 years but it might just justify the file size requirements :shillkek:

This is an answer I've found with information about the original GTA IV install size.

Don't know if it is correct (someone here might know), but it should give an indication of what to expect.

Just make a search for GTA IV in the text.

There you go:

Spoiler

Next, let’s look at a much more graphically intense game: GTA IV (without the DLC, as it’s essentially a “copy” if you will - EFLC is 15GB, just like GTAIV folder.)

  • GTA IV - 15.1 GB, as installed on my drive.
    • “common” - this folder contains much of the data used for how shaders work, how the characters, weapons, cars behave; etc. Mostly scripts. 90 MB - Only about 0.5% of total…
    • “movies” - this contains a few .bik files - used in the “TV” you can watch in your apartments.(Bink-encoded full-motion video files for games). 1.76 GB (12% total).
    • “pc” - this contains all the rest of the “magic” of the game: 13.1 GB (87%)
      • “anim” - animations of the characters, car door opening, guns firing, etc, 695MB. (5% total)
      • “audio” - all the SFX, the music, the radio stations, the dialogues. 6GB. (40% total)
      • “data” - a mashup of the maps, meshes, scripts for what things do, etc. 5.63GB (maps makes up 5.38GB alone) 37% total.
      • “html” - 30MB for the in-game Web… had to include that just because it takes up 30 freaking MB for a computer within a game…
      • “models” - all the models for the weapons, vehicles, pedestrians, etc. 819MB (pedestrian content being 661MB) 5% total
      • “textures” - all the miscellaneous textures not contained in the “data” and “models” .img files. 51MB
    • The other 1% is the .exe and .dll files, miscellaneous settings, etc.
    • This gives:
      • Movies (watch TV in apartments) - 12%
      • Audio (music, dialogue, sounds, etc) - 40%
      • “Data” (including the maps - where everything is placed, boundaries, trashcans, etc) - 37%
      • Models - 5%
      • Animations - 5%
      • Miscellaneous (textures, .exe, in game browser, minor scripts) - 1%

GTA IV, similar to Terraria, has a large chunk of space to sounds/music. The big difference is that GTA IV has a lot of 3D models, location data, etc. More graphics, in other words. Essentially sound and graphics take up the most.

If you explore the folders of other games, you’ll find a similar thing - sound and graphics (or movies) are the space-takers. And the reasoning behind this is simple: no matter how much scripting/programming you do - it’s all words, essentially in files similar to word docs. Even a million lines of code would be under 100MB.

But sound - you can’t compress that very much without severe loss in quality. So every spoken word, every “ugh” and “BAM,” every gunshot, every bullet casing hitting the floor, every fly buzzing - that’s all sound files that take up quite a bit of space.

Graphics, similarly, are more than just .jpgs these days. There’s all sorts of 3D meshes, the animations for them, the shaders, the 3D locations, etc. That takes up quite a bit of space.

Wanna see GTA The Trilogy: The Definitive Edition midnight launch. A line of people in front of the store

I went to the Midnight Launch of GTA5 and it was the craziest thing. I almost saw someone die. It was at a Gamestop in a strip mall so they had a line of people that extended out the door, but then made a 90 degree turn otherwise it would have went out into the street. People were standing in the road regardless, but like right off the curb. Well when people were coming out after they got their copies, because of the line, they couldnt see traffic coming from their left. So this dude in this Corvette was all pissed off because people were in the street and being loud, so he thought it would be cool the floor it passed the front of the store, I'm sure he was going every bit of 55 mph, and this chick and her boyfriend almost stepped right out in front him. It was literally a matter of inches. Then 3 dudes who got their copies came out of the store screaming and yelling, and got into this jacked up pickup, and one of them got in the back and had this huge American flag and was waving it and screaming as they tore off. I'll never forget that night!

True, and there's no comparison. But when you put both maps in their historical context, SA's was arguably groundbreaking relative to its time. The same cannot be said about V's, at least not to the same level of SA's.

Grand Theft Auto V's map is the biggest in the series, but - apart from Vice City - feels like it's the smallest.

Yeah. V's map is huge but it has very long render distance and straight highways that run the entire map

Vehicles speed, motion blur when driving and fog do the trick

GTA SA map is big and I hope that won't change by increasing draw distance in remastered version

I agree, I think the image posted a little while back without the fog is a great example of why increasing draw distance alone wouldn't necessarily be a good thing
