Who recorded Claude's voice lines? Grunts from falling and such, that is.

Recommended Posts

I always wondered... Someone definitely recorded Claude's voice lines from falling/getting hit/getting shot/dying. I know it's likely someone irrelevant and maybe wasn't even intended for him. But...

After nearly 20 years, has anyone ever figured that out?

It is super annoying when people say claude is has no voice. claude indeed has a voice but he simply chooses not to talk. now my question is who was claudes voice actor? i know claude never says a word in gta 3 or san andreas but he makes grunting noises in gta 3. when he falls from a high height or drowns he does a short "IHH!" also who did his motion capture? does anyone know? why didnt rockstar credit this person or was it just sam or dan houser....

It’s well established that R* didn’t hire a voice actor for technical reasons. It isn’t annoying when people point this out. It’s simply a fact.

Many games from that era (late 90s/early 00s) didn’t feature fully voiced protagonists because the technology was still new so devs put their priorities elsewhere.

Clearly they hired someone for some of the minor sound effects, but can that be classified as voice “acting”? Recording a short grunt is in a completely different league to recording hours of spoken and structured dialogue.

ok fair point but claude still does physically have a voice right? how else did he tell catalina his name and why was his motion capture person never credited? who did his "animation acting"

Claude having a "physical voice" as far as your post is concerned doesn't hold much water. If somebody is mute, selective or otherwise, there are many ways an individual can tell somebody their name. As for the motion capture, this has remained unknown and appears to be an uncredited role. If you're implying that the actor who provided the mo-cap must be the voice of Claude by default, I wouldn't really say that's true either.

no i am not implying that his motion capture was the person who did his short grunts and pain noises. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if claudes voice was AI generated or something because his grunts have very little voice in it. what i am wondering was why did rockstar never credit claudes motion capture actor, they usually credit those people and it seems strange that they never credited claudes motion actor. I doubt i would get an answer but im just wondering why rockstar was even able to not credit that person.

That's what I've been wondering too, who recorded these grunts? I mean maybe Rockstar purchased a sound pack like many developers back in these days.

If such identical sounds exist in other games we could track them down.

I'm guessing Claude's grunts were probably done in-house by Craig Conner or Stuart Ross.

That would be the closest guess here actually.

Interestingly enough, a lot of changes were made post 9/11. This included the removal of Claude's voice, as terrorists had the ability to speak.

Looking at the list of VAs credited for GTA3's pedestrian dialogue, it seems Hunter Platin is on the top and from a technical standpoint, Claude is a ped too and he's the first ever ped that gets defined in the game's data files in numerical order.

It's quite likely that the pain sounds for Claude were done by either Hunter Platin or one of the other VAs of the peds. And to avoid any kind of misleading and wrong information: No, Claude was never intended to have a voice, ever. R* most likely did this to make him similar to James Earl Cash from Manhunt, which was already four years into development by the time GTA3 was released.:)

We know this, this isn't a thread for that. I was genuinely curious who recorded the grunts, that'd be the closest thing to "Claude's" voice actor though, haha..

that makes sense and im sure that he was never going to get a bunch of voice lines either.
