[NEW]

Hello everyone,

Today I’am here, to put an ultimate end to the whole/endless downgrade debate.

I‘ve been following threads of users talking about the game being downgraded, as well as people believing the game is downgraded/upgraded with each new patch for quite some time now and have decided to do an ultimate comparison between all Versions.

After extensive hours, days, weeks and months of testing both versions, swapping between all Versions, taking like-for-like screenshots in almost identical conditions, and observing/comparing them side by side for hours, + in depth investigations, I'm here to bring you the truth...

 ——————————————————————————

Disclaimer: I have COMPLETELY revamped my thread as of 13.10.2021, so all comments from before [page 1-5] may look out of place.

Also, I constantly add new stuff into the thread, as you can see in paragraph 7.

 ——————————————————————————

FYI [1]: The ambient occlusion has been restored since version 1.09, as it has been altered with the day one patch 1.02, and then heavily downgraded in Version 1.03.

Version 1.00 has a different ambient occlusion.

FYI [2]: Comparisons/pictures were taken on the PS4 Pro/PS5, Xbox One X/Series X, PC [RTX 2080 TI]

[the ones taken on PC, have a banner that it was taken on PC (paragraph 7)]

3. Paragraph | Comparison between Version 1.00 & Version 1.29 [GIF Format]

I have went through the whole story, with the “replay mission” feature, both in Version 1.00 and Version 1.29, and have taken several like for like screenshots from cutscenes “only”.

Weather and time seems to be changed, in some cutscenes, despite the “replay mission” feature, but those are not really supposed to be taken at face value though. Rather, general differences in the overall ambiance.

5. Paragraph | Comparison between Version 1.00, 1.01 & 1.02 | PART 1

In this paragraph I’ll talk about what Version was being used in trailers and by big review publishers footages, like IGN, DigitalFoundry and GameSpot.

Big publishers like DigitalFoundry, IGN and GameSpot, were given RDR 2 with the Day One Patch aka. Version 1.02.

I have deeply analyzed all Versions [Version 1.00, 1.02], and looked for indicators to see what Version is what.

I have found out that in Version 1.00, the ammo indicators is positioned high, while in Version 1.02, the ammo indicator is positioned low.

Version 1.00:

KqZYVuT.jpg

Version 1.02:

U05KLmW.jpg

Now have a look at the Game, big publishers played an week earlier ahead  of release

DigitalFoundry:

WUMdl4k.jpg

IGN:

BmKeZ0S.jpg

GameSpot:

c0qydQr.jpg

All ammo indicators are positioned low.

This means that they were given RDR 2 with the day one patch aka. 1.01 or 1.02.

 ——————————————————————————

5. Paragraph | Comparison between Version 1.00, 1.01, 1.02 & 1.29 | PART 2

So now that we know, that big publishers like DigitalFoundry, IGN and GameSpot, were given RDR 2 with the Day One Patch aka. Version 1.02., by showing indicators that reveal, which Version is which, like the HUD ammo indicator positioning and the cash indicator positioning, I was thinking to myself that I still need to compare the ambient occlusion with one of their footages to make sure.

There is one scene, provided by IGN in their Review, a publisher, that was given an earlier Version, aka. 1.01.

Here:

!!!LOOK AT HOSEAS COAT IN ALL COMPARISONS TO GET THE GIST!!!

 ——————————————————————————

Let’s start with the 1.02 to 1.29 comparison to make clear that we still have the same general AO that was originally introduced in 1.02: ->

9F3D3EC1-E7EC-4C24-A478-76E28FAEE5B5.gif

Both look as expected, IDENTICAL in general shade placement [Look at Hoseas Coat]

 ——————————————————————————

Now let’s start with the 1.00 to 1.02/1.29 comparison to illustrate that general AO shade placement is completely different: ->

Version 1.00 & 1.02:

EAB5B901-9C33-4A9F-B949-53E7A7095297.gif

Both look as expected, completely DIFFERENTin terms of general shade placement [Look at Hoseas Coat]

Version 1.00 & 1.29:

Again, both look as expected completely DIFFERENT in terms of general shade placement [Look at Hoseas Coat

 ——————————————————————————

Now with the 1.00 to 1.01 comparison to illustrate that general AO shade placement is completely different as with 1.00 to 1.02/1.29: ->

CCE0FBC7-3E47-425B-AC15-8737A3200DED.gif

Again, both look completely DIFFERENT in terms of general shade placement [Look at Hoseas Coat]

 ——————————————————————————

Now with the 1.01 to 1.02/1.29 comparison to show that general AO shade placement is identical: ->

Version 1.01 & 1.02:

94BD1D9B-21E2-4146-9C3B-681BBEC08520.gif

Both look IDENTICAL in general shade placement [Look at Hoseas Coat]

Version 1.01 & 1.29:

93F1F9EF-54E5-457B-B954-1D1082631255.gif

Both look IDENTICAL in general shade placement [Look at Hoseas Coat]

 ——————————————————————————

As we all saw, the AO in 1.01 [Footage of IGN], which were given an earlier version, looks identical to version 1.02 [day one patch] and version 1.29.

Version 1.00 looks different.

My man, it was downgraded a while ago, now it's back to normal, that's about it

The biggest difference was with the ambient occlusion, which was basically gone on version 1.07

I ain't gonna provide evidence, cause there's loads of videos on the internet, but logically speaking - 1.29 version and 1.07 - like there was at least 22 paches between the time when the downgrade occured and this post being created, they had the time to fix it, and they did

But the thing is, people were still talking daily, about the game being downgraded with the recent versions and that’s clearly not the case.

The ambient occlusion was actually altered with Version 1.02 [Day 1 patch], and then heavily downgraded with the 1.03 patch, when Online was introduced.

Is this on PC? I play the game on the PS4 and I can't help but feel that the patched version suffered some sort of downgrade, especially when it comes to the lightning effects. I changed to the 1.00 version a while ago and never went back.

There is a clear draw distance downgrade on one of the pics you posted.

What you are experiencing is, placebo. There was no downgrade as I proved in my post and hours of testing.

Mate, sorry I am the one to tell you this, but the whole placebo thing is not valid anymore.

There are videos out there since 2019 that show that a downgrade took place with each and every update.

1.00 vs 1.09 for example

Whether its a minor downgrade or a major one, thats a different question...

Man no offense but you started claiming that stuff on my reddit post , I told you you are trying to convince your self (not us) for something that’s so clear and proved before . I told you my friend that it’s your call if you want to play the patched or not . you can’t afford loosing the added content and some fixed bugs and having your internet turned off . Stop doing that you are waisting your time man fr..also it gets on my nerves that you spread misinformation only to convince yourself that you shouldn’t downgrade your game . Guys don’t waste your time explaining things we already know , the guy started all that on one of my reddit posts and since I stop answering he came here to find what he seeks . ALSO MAN DONT YOU SE TE 1.00 TEXTURES ARE BETTER LIKE FRRRR...!!!!!!!!!!!

Mate, sorry I am the one to tell you this, but the whole placebo thing is not valid anymore.

There are videos out there since 2019 that show that a downgrade took place with each and every update.

1.00 vs 1.09 for example

Whether its a minor downgrade or a major one, thats a different question...

Me having an “1.00 vs 1.29 argument” with you on Reddit, doesn’t make my thread any less reliable.

The thing is, that that’s not draw distance. They removed the trees entirely, as I have just revisited the place, from multiple locations and photo mode.

The reason they did it, is most likely for the increase in performance, which was lacking in version 1.00, with supersampling enabled and 4k Output.

No one is gonna play the game at 800 % zoom. The fact that you have to zoom that close into the picture just shows, how negligible the difference is. Yet the benefits of the recent versions greatly outweigh any benefit, version 1.00 has to offer [other then John Marstons face, body, clothes change] etc.

Yeah, that's still called a downgrade.

And the AO used in the updates is of lower quality.

You can see that in the photo you uploaded of the Valentine Store, the bottom of the products are more grainy than 1.00.

Also, the Valentine Store has the laterns lights removed at night with patch 1.03 and later.

Of course it because of perfomance, that's the reason downgrades take place.

But downgrades did happen, there is no placebo going on.

Still, it's pretty clear to me you already made up your mind. I can see it won't be a fun discussion so I will leave it to that.

Have fun with whatever version you are playing, just don't spread misinformation. :)

You're the one spreading misinformation my friend. The bottom of the products are more grainy, yes, but that's because the AO has been upgraded, they produce more shadows and in this game, more shadows mean more grain.

This has more to do with the technique Rockstar used to make the shadows look softer and therefore more realistic, and less to do with the AO used in the game.

Also, yes, The lantern lights on Valentine were turned off because of performance reasons, but that's not really a downgrade. The game's lighting settings were not downgraded, they just simply removed unnecessary lights that made the game run worse. It was a smart decision to make because valentine was already well lit and the performance was awful there.

And the draw distance is upgraded too, not downgraded. The pop-in is a nightmare on 1.00. But if you would rather have a couple of more trees that you have to use %800 zoom to see, i guess it is the superior version.

No reason for the bees to explain to flies why honey is better than sh*t . If you don’t see it friend then I think you are blinded by your stubbornness. Mad , cause you probably play online games and you can’t play unpatched . Because all that time you claimed spending has to be for personal reasons . Anyway , as you see no one gave a damn , we already know what’s up . Just saying , your only argument is about the AO (which man ffs is better on 1.00 it’s clear in the pics you posted) but you don’t mention the textures...textures that made JM the monstrosity  he is after 1.00 . Textures that made buildings look like paper made . We haven’t got all those comments from pc players about the textures only for you to come and claim what friend ? Do you even realise people loose stuff when going unpatched ? It’s easy to play the patch . You mention performance downgrade while personally and in some videos I’ve seen , the performance is smoother in towns .RDR2 got downgraded for the sake of online . Online can’t perform in 1.00 textures .  Opinions are like butTholes everyone has one . But the downgrade from 1.00 isn’t an opinion anymore , it’s a fact . Stop waisting your time and get real .

Also , our argument on reddit was in a very old post of mine so claiming I’m afraid to get downvoted is hilarious ..like the whole stuff going on there and here with ya .

Is this on PC? I play the game on the PS4 and I can't help but feel that the patched version suffered some sort of downgrade, especially when it comes to the lightning effects. I changed to the 1.00 version a while ago and never went back.

Doesn't PS4 sounds like it's about to take off when trying to run the game? if this the case then prolly just optimisations or something. or someone in the house is pissing around with your TV settings.

No it runs just fine. Nothing wrong with the TV either.

Now let's think about it for a second... Okay the pictures of this topic show no sign of downgrade, but pictures and actual gameplay - walking, running, shooting - are two very different things. I would be more convinced if there was actually a comparison (side-by-side) of gameplay footage like in the YouTube video of 2 years ago. Just my two cents.

Supersampling mode disabled, runs the game at a native 1080p resolution, just like the Standard PS4. It’s the same.

but the pro runs on higher graphics settings.
so it can be that maybe 1.0 compared to 1.29 is very similiar on the pro, but the base consoles maybe have a bigger difference

The pro version DOES NOT run the game on higher graphics settings, all console versions of the game have the same settings, they just run on different resolutions.

actually it does.
we have the preset file in the files.

they share most, but here, i extracted the differences

If the preset files are available to us in the game files, then why can't we just compare the 1.00 preset file and the 1.29 preset file? This would be the answer to all of our questions.

The last patch (blood money for online) is the best story-mode has been since release.

I will admit that I don't see rainbows as much as I used to but the graphics in the latest patch is top notch, best it's been since day 1.

I play on xbox series x, xbox 1x, and xbox 1s

So the only major thing they downgraded on consoles is a setting that almost makes no difference in fps or graphics on pc?

(Im not the one saying this btw, check digital foundry and hardware unboxed's rdr 2 optimization videos)

The ssao setting remains the same on both files btw, and there are more shadows casted on objects on 1.29, so i guess it's safe to say that the ambient occlusion got more refined (improved) and not downgraded.

The texture quality is the same too, so you can finally shut your mouth about the goddamn textures being better on 1.00 OutlawJorge.

With “day one”, are you referring to Version 1.02, aka. the Day One patch, or the unpatched on disc Version, 1.00?
