What is a Gang Attack?

What the hell is a gang attack?
I see a red circle. I'm not busy. I need to kill a gang.OK.  Disturbingly, they hint to me they are Marines (SemperFi! My fellow Leathernecks!).
I kill them, eventually, and get 99 RP and 2 shinny nickels. What is the deal? Does it lead up to something? Or is "PASSED" my reward? Its fun,but after a few battles it feels like work-and if it is work I need to be paid beeeech!

Seriously,is there a point to it besides it being fun?(For a while)
Don't even tell me about the Loot Boxes. They have 2 bucks, clothing unlock,and a coupon for 50 cent off any blow job at "Big Berthas Hore House" - where the Primo Girls have all their teeth. (But ya pay extra to see 'dem!).

It's fun to get them to shoot at you and then call the cops and watch them fight it out with the gang. Just put away your gun before they get there.

Gang attacks are a relic of the old GTA Online days. Back when there weren't many ways of making money, before all the businesses and heists and stuff.

For anyone reading this and wondering how to call the cops,goto your phone,goto the dialpad on the lower left and dial 911,choose Police.
